I will start.. Winter...being the "I don't drink enough water" season: Hizzhonor gets warm water with (gasp) maple syrup. ( He IS the NOT!! Spoiled!!! Arabian after all) No problem getting him to drink--a chore however to keep the water bucket filled. Of course if you have more than one...hauling warm water can be a pita. You can substitute cheapo apple juice or molasses for maple syrup. ( Mr macmtn is regularly caught chugging off the horse's gallon of maple syrup stored in thekitchen fridge -but then he Does buy it..) My Arabian lives in my garage. His hay is stored there-and we have a wood over dirt floor. Always lost the bottom layer of hay to mold. Tried putting it up on pallets...mice moved in. Still had mouldy hay....plus megamice. Ditto for plastic over the floor. Finally put the bottom layer in baled shaving...then piled the hay ovet that... No more-not ONE lost bale of hay.... for many years now. and when you get down to the bottom layer-shavings waiting to be used. Now..the bottom of the bale of shaving got wet...but-well..shavings were meant to get wet anyway. No loss there. And no fire danger. This year my shavings supplier started using plastic on the shavings bales. I do not know if that will affect anything...check back with me next year for results of that experiment.

I don't have too many neat ones... but they are awesome labour savers: I *must* clip the riding heese if I have an indoor over winter. I have one blanket that goes from about -40 to about +40F. Handy for our climate. I use Happy Mouth or other type bits or hackamores in the winter, so no warming up bits. Equyss grooming spray takes care of almost all winter grooming problems including static. Liniment in a spray bottle, much faster and easier. Tack wipes for quick tack clean after riding. Horse wipes for quick face/eyes/tail/butt/teats. |

Have you ever lost your twitch because one darling child needed it to beat the other darling child over the head? And then didn't return it to its proper place (twitch, not darling child's head)? Take a piece of baling twine and tie it in a loop (square knot is fine) just large enough to slide over your closed fist. Attach a double-snap hook to the loop. Hang the loop around your wrist, grasp horse's nose firmly with your fingers, slide the baling twine loop over your fist and position around grasped end of horse's nose. Still holding the nose, begin twisting the double-snap hook until the baling twine loop tightens around the nose. It needs to be quite tight to be effective. When tight enough, attach other end of double-snap hook to halter. Voila!! Hands-free twitch!! I had a vet practically kiss me one time when I whipped out this concoction while he was trying to tube a horse and he had left his twitch at another farm. Of course you must not leave it on too long and you should massage the nose after removal of the twitch and feed lots of cookies when you are done.

I get a container of baby wipes.... let them dry out until completely dry and then add whatever I want in order to make the wipes of my choice without the expense... Liquid glycerine soap neatsfoot oil linament and the list goes on.... Great for tack wipes and MUCH cheaper than the ones they sell! Also use them in the house with pinesol, clorox or whatever I want added to the container of dried out baby wipes! |

Goldfish in my water tank - they eat moquitoes, flies, drooled in grain. .10 cents @ Wally World I leave my bottom layer under my hay and use it multiple years - I use straw - its cheaper then hay or sawdust bales. I burn it after 3 or 4 yrs. I check tire pressure on trailers before use. A squishy tire is soon to be a flat tire is soon to be an expense. Check that tire pressure! Mice - dump a nice serving of uncooked minute rice in your barn. Mice eat rice, rice gets moist, rice blows up, mice die. End of mice. |

Put all blankets on (closed front or not) over the horse's heads. I got the impression from a recent thread on TOB that people actually undo the chest buckles/straps to put their horses blankets on and then redo them. I think that's crazy - I put two blankets on at the same time that are closed front. If I did each separately and redoing the chest straps each time I estimate that it would take me at minimum another half an hour to finish

wash bits in the dishwasher to get them clean. I put my journeymen custom chaps in the washing machine on gentle cycle with some leather-safe soap, and then in the dryer on low with 6 sheets of fabric softener and then put them on when they are still damp in order to mold them to my legs....this gets them really clean and gets the sweat out of the leather. I've had my current pair since 99 and they look great. Journeymen laughs at me for doing it, but they were actually asking about my technique last time i was in--guess they finally got curious enough to want to try it. |

I do this, too! Do people actually undo the buckles everytime they put a blanket on their horse? UGH! I don't have the patience for that! I just hold the blanket up and mine stick their head through the opening. Barbie will even back out of it when I'm taking if off.... God, I LOVE that horse!!!

I learned it from a trainer down in FL when I was a kid. I carefully tried it and was amazed with the results. I've done it with three pairs and have really seen the results! The leather lasts so much longer when you get all the embedded crap out of them. My previous pair, from 93 are still going strong with their new owner. |

I have always washed chaps and half chaps in the wash machine with a really good leather soap (I love Pepede) but have never tried putting them into the dryer. How long do you usually leave them in ? Not sure if I am brave enough

I can go ya one better on the bits in the dishwasher thing. Instead, lead your horse back to his/her stall with the bridle on. Once in stall, remove bridle. Immediately duck bit into water bucket, maybe squidge the rings a little with your fingers if horsie got grass or treats. Voila, you're done until next time. If you do this EVERY time you ride, there's no need to haul the bit home to the dishwasher. |
