Maybe it's because I was majorly ruined in a bad car accident (hit by drunk) AND the fact that our roads are a deadly free-for-all at the best of times, but does anyone else worry about their drive time to the barn? There's really only one way to our barn, with a few *nasty* intersections you really really have to look out for. Of all the intersections, this one featured is closest and likely or statistically the "safest" (I use the term firmly tounge-in-cheek). Anyway, here is what happend tonight , no I dont' knwo who it was yet if it's anyone we know. (top story) http://calgary.ctv.ca/ Sorry I'd put in a sad smiley but they're not working.. I dont' know anything about it yet.. this kind of thing is **always** happening here... |

The fact that the road I take to the barn is nicknamed the "killer highway" causes a wee bit of worry. They are in the process of making it a four lane split highway- which is reassuring but that's bound to cause a few accidents due to the new set of traffic lights they've plonked down. People are going to drive straight through them. I do worry on long trips though that something will happen. |

I worry a ton for long trips. A friend of mine lives in Albany and I loathe driving in their traffic. I'm a country girl and just can't do busy-ness in a car. I feel so badly, she's asked me to come visit and I just haven't. I want to, but I worry. Plus I haven't found anyone to care for the beastie while I'm gone. And my father owns a towing company. The cars he brings in sometimes make me thank my lucky stars. Some of those poor people...Drive safely everyone!! |

I have my horses at home so my drive time is to work. I most definitely worry about it esp since I drive into the sun as it is coming up and have to encounter a lot of high schoolers driving to school. I can'ttell you how many times I have had oncoming traffic cross the ceneter line I am driving about 65 miles RT and during the high season it is most definitely NOT a fun drive |

I don't worry about the drive to the barn, but I definitely worry about driving Avery and his cart on the roads. That was the main reason we left our old barn. That had once been on a reasonably quiet road, but with the advent of 2 new subdivisions, one at each end, AND construction on the highway that runs parallel, there was so much new traffic going SO fast on that road that my nerves couldn't take it any more. |

I'm with WA. I live on a relatively quiet road with a 30MPH speed limit - while I will occasionally venture to the road to drive the Wee Spotted Coco, most times we stick to the fields and my ring. It's a shame, because we COULD drive for ice cream in the summer - it's only a couple of miles away. But people drive like they have their heads up their beee-hinds. I was actually hit by a car when I was in college (while riding my bike) and - for those of you who have read the $700 Pony book - the story where I get hit by a car while riding is completely true. Luckily no one was hurt that time around, but what a freaking scary thing. |

Ha, my barn commute involved a long trip on a road nicknamed "The Sure-kill." (Though not for long!) I do worry about driving, in general. Cars are big fast hunks of metal and there are way too many people who act stupid while they're controlling one. Going to the barn is pretty much the only time I get in a car nowadays - and let me tell you, riding my bike all around the city has made me twice as aware of just how bad many drivers are. |

Yes. I have a 10 mile stretch, windy, twisty, poorly lit, with deer and other assorted critters crossing the roads. And it seems that people in St. Louis do not know how to druve, unless they grew up elsewhere. |

Moving to Georgia was a shock to my driving senses... People drive faaaast here! If it is 55 mph, I usually drive 60 or so; 65, I'll drive 70... People here seem to drive 75 and 85 no matter the situation. Not my style. I like my life. Not in THAT much of a hurry. That is why I don't ride anymore. I would have to drive to the Atlanta area to take lessons. Don't think my nerves could handle it.

Hell ya! I'm a crossing guard, so I'm out in the street during prime time. All I have is a whistle, flares, neon green vest and my not so fast feet to keep me safe. Some people are morons. I worry about it, but I can't dwell on it. I'd rather get hit, not some little kid. Being cautious is really the only thing you can do. Or call your local police department everyday and ask for more police presence on the dangerous roads. |

I'm a civil engineer - I design these roads: for specific speeds which drivers do not pay attention to. i was hit by a truck, while on horseback, in 1999 and let me tell you it was the worst experience you can have. Both the horse and I survived to ride another day - but it was mighty scarey. And a couple of years ago I t-boned an older courvette w/ 2 16 yr olds it. They snuck the car out of dad's garage and were zooming away with the headlights off (at 6 am!!) and I never saw them as I pulled out from the stop sign. We were all very lucky I was going so slow and they were going so fast - I spun them and the air bags in my truck saved me (I had my belt on - they did not). When i was a kid I rode through town on my horse and people slowed and waved - now its almost like a horse and rider are targets. Road rage. Makes me mighty said. |
