As most of y'all know, there's a big huge disconnect between my horsey life and my musical life. Today my two worlds collided with results that were vastly more entertaining than I would have expected. 3 of my dear friends in the Athens Rawk Chicks clique made the trek out to darkest Redneckville through the freezing rain to meet Avery for the first time. None of them had been anywhere NEAR a horse since their teens! So here's a photo blog... CHAPTER ONE: Carol, wardrobe mistress to the stars, meets Avery for the first time. Neither one of them is totally convinced this is the best idea in the world. Upon advice, Carol digs for a cookie... ...And everybody decides this might be fun after all. Avery, singer Vanessa, rockcrit/garage punk podcaster Grrtch, and V's daughter V engage in an in-depth discussion of the relative merits of Roddy Woomble's "My Secret Is My Silence" vis-a-vis Richard Thompson's "The Angels Have Taken My Race Horse Away". "Avery!! Whaddaya MEAN, you don't like The Reigning Sound??!" "Oh. You like Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las? OK, we can be friends then." ...At which point, the weather was so horrible that the party adjourned to the nearest coffee house for further discussion. THE END. |

Awww, how nice of your non-horsey friends to come to the barn for a visit! Avery's like "ummm, yeah but where are the cookies. Oh, and did I mention I need a cookie? Maybe my mom forgot to tell you but I need a constant supply of cookies. You guys are boring."

Heeheehee
Funny but I have the same two incongroooo..eee..us.. um.. inconsistant lives too. At times in the real world I"m a sound recording engineer (and realistically a stage mom an' a manager an' a backup guitarist an' a singer an' a producer an' a promoter an' a contract manager an' a ..oh you get the idea) Funny how some people think punk and horses don't mix.. .. hummm I have, though, no pics of me doing the two simutaneously. Closest I've got is my Photobucket account where I've got a pic with my horse and then a pic in a studio ... both photos are side-by-side anyway....

Here are my worlds colliding...my mom driving the tractor when they came up for a visit in December 2004. Hey...I don't think they've been back since!
My parents are TOTALLY non-horsey and I don't think they've ever even petted one of my guys. |

Fish Cheeks - I *hate* driving the tractor so I have a lot of sympathy with your mom!! Onyx - Cool - you'll have to PM me details! This meetup has been in the works for a while. It's not actually that big a disconnect in this town, b/c there are so many rockstar gentleman farmers in the area. One of them (probably the best known - a hay farmer) was actually supposed to come to this - he and I have NEVER met despite the following facts: 1. We have a ton of mutual friends, both musical and horsey 2. I've boarded at barns that buy his hay 3. I know his farm manager well and have BEEN TO his farm 4. Avery recently relocated to exactly his area of Redneckville - we drive past his place every day en route to the feed store 5. We both have horses 6. We both DRIVE our horses 7. We both occasionally COMPETE in driving competitions! It's getting to be a running joke that we haven't met. Last year it happened that the GA Draft Horse Assn, which he's involved in since he drives Percherons, and the GA Carriage Driving Assn, which I'm involved in, were supposed to combine and put on a light/heavy draft horse show. He & I sent messages of goodwill thru our ton of mutual friends that we were looking forward to meeting each other finally - and then the combined show was canceled due to lack of entries on both sides. He had promised to come out for this little gathering - but a minor matter called the Rock'n'roll Hall of Fame intervened! We did have fun though!! |

It's good to see that I'm not the only one with a half-horsey, half-rock and roll lifestyle! Most of my music friends aren't really sure what to think about horses, and I've come across a LOT of people who associate horses with rich preppy white people and seem surprised that I ride. Now my DIY punk side co-exists pretty happily with my horsey life, but it took awhile for me to figure out how to balance those things. War Admiral, I lived in Atlanta for a few years. You'll have to let me know what you listen to - perhaps we've crossed paths at the Earl or the 40 Watt.

Well, there are some science geeks that ride - one guy who was a grad student in the same lab where I post doc'd, he has a position in Hawaii, and his daughter is a dressage freak. One very well known woman in my field rides with Cindy Sydnor, when we meet up at conferences we ALWAYS talk horses. Her husband drives - competes too. But in general? No one gets it. What's actually harder is that no one at the barn has the least clue what my day is like. Period. They have simply NO concept. So I would like some barn people to just see how I run around all day before I get to the barn. WA - loved the pics. And Fish Cheeks! My horse does "tongue" too! So I'm not the only moron standing in a freezing indoor with the oldies station on, playing tongue? (And Ted's eyes glaze over, and he drops, and he is so happy. the sicko.). |

Great pictures
I can see it now....Avery will soon be even more famous as songs penned in his honor begin to hit the airwaves I was trying to think what worlds I have that might collide. It occurred to me that if my husband were to go to the farm with me (actually in the same vehicle and for a non-emergency) or go to a show to watch me ride, it might be interpreted as a sign of the apocolypse. |

Speaking of the dichotomy, circuspony, you'll love this....good old TO of Jade Tree Records mentioned the other day that he's getting his real estate license....i think he'll be licensed in PA if you need someone to show you around. Yes, I spent my youth going to hardcore shows until 2am, only to get up at 4 for the show. How I managed to not fall asleep behind the wheel or in mid bascule, one will never know. |
