Hi All! I was explaining to my roomate how to muck out and bed a stall. She was like "I don't understand why you want to bank it higher around the edges!" I thought about it and knew that I was supposed to do it, but not why. I hypothesized a few reasons, but does anyone know the real reason why? |

It is supposed to help prevent a horse from being cast.

That is also the reason I gave her... but decided to check just in case. Don't want to pass false info on to Newbies. Thanks guys! |

that is true, but also, if you get shavings delivered once or twice a month and they are dumped outside of each stall, you put all the shavings in the stall and put the extra up on the sides and pull down as needed until the next load of shavings comes. |

What everyone else has said. I speak as the owner of a horse who gets cast at least once every couple of years (but thankfully has a boatload of brains and common sense and can usually wiggle his way out of it...). |

Tip likes to lie against his banks in one corner so he has a little nest. Make that triple purpose. |

Keep them from getting cast, a constant, fresh supply of clean shavings, nests for Tip and Stella (my dog), and a fun place to hide poop to frustrate the humans. How exactly do they hide piles of poop in their banks without disturbing the banks???
