Shown thru Int I. Trained thru GP (worked for Hilda for 10 years, fantastic education there) Had a good number of clinics with international trainers. Always scored 7 on rider in shows. Surrounded by the big guys most of my riding life watching some of the best dressage in the world. Lived in europe and on the FEI tour. But what does that make me... just a fairly competent rider, but with a very good eye and more information than I can ever use. I'd like to do a memory dump!

I'm good enough that on the right horse, I look like I know what I'm doing.
On the wrong horse however... let just say, it ain't pretty.

As someone said earlier, the more I know, the more I realize I don't know. So, a couple of years ago, I would have said I was a 4. Now I realize how much more I don't know, I'm still giving myself a 4. That's as a rider. As a horseman, I give myself a 2. I'm working on it...which is why I spend time reading boards like this. I also spend a lot of time reading books on general horsemanship as well as talking to experts like my trainers, vet, farrier, etc. |

I vary from a two to an eight, in cycles. Thursday I was a six, last friday was a three. As for horsemanship, I do the very best I can by my horse, which is about all that I can do. |

For Hunters - that is my forte - I would say 6 or 7. With talent for more, but never given the chance to reach my potential. Biggest downfall is that I don't get to practice very much so my eye suffers. I can make it around a 3' hunter course just fine only practicing every couple of weeks (not my choosing! The "cards" I am dealing with) on a green horse. Always have ridden green horses or ponies so I am looking forward to finding a new partner so we can move up to 3'6'' together. The search is on! 3 in Dressage - Can kind of make my mom's 4th level horse "kind of" look like we know what we are doing. 5 for non-riding stuff - know my comformation/anatomy, and various health issues but still freak out when they get sick or hurt. |

Ummmmm.......I hate to put a number on it. Some days when everything goes just right, I think I'm an eight. I was second in a Classic behind Ms. Betty last summer and I really thought my sh!t did not stink that day. Other days I'm a solid six. I can jump a 3'6" course without holding my breath and sometimes I make pretty good decisions, but other times my horse really helps me out. I foxhunt in the first field. I use to gallop my mare bareback across the field with just a halter on (before she died last year
). I break my babies and take them over their first cross-rails. I can give IV shots, diagnose colic, and wrap legs. But I would be embarrassing in a dressage ring or if I tried to ride a reiner. I rode in a team penning competition, fell off, and got beaten by 12 year olds. I rode a Paso Fino once and couldn't get him to do his "thing" and I'm not even sure what exactly the "thing" is that I was trying to get him to do. I've been riding 35 years and I'm still learning every day. So it's all relative isn't it? |

I have been riding most of my life now, I guess - 11 yrs. Though I didn't ride consistently until about 9 or so years ago. As far as rating? I don't know! Some days I feel like I'm a 9, when I'm on my gelding and we nail a course, or my mare is soft, supple, and responsive. Other days, I feel like a 4, when it's all I can do to keep my mare from running off, or I feel like I'm just flopping all over the place Overall, I'd say I might be a 7 or so. I'm pretty competent, but I haven't ridden a lot of different horses so I'm sure I would not feel as comfortable on horses besides my own. I don't mind the challenging horse now and again, as long as I can go at my own pace as far as getting to know the horse and progressing in the skills that I ask of it. I don't show much, but I assume if I did show more I'd be in the middle of the pack...maybe occasionally a winner, occasionally a loser.

I'm all over the place, not to exceed 8, on a great day. I've been riding forever, and have self made my 13 year old horse, good and bad. I got a call back in the younger Adults at Upperville last year (it was as if I'd won!) and then it'll all fall apart. This is the most humbling sport ever, and my mantra is "If it was easy, everyone would do it." First post, BTW....glad to have found you guys....

Sounds like you people are all being too hard on yourself, given the descriptions of the scale: "So tell me about yourself, on a scale of 1-10 where do you sit. 10 being very competent rider, 1 being I just ride and have no skill or training what-so ever." If it's just about competence, I feel like a 9. I'm a fairly proficient rider, with certain glitches. But if the scale were "10 being legitimate Olympic hopeful and 1 being a short stirrup/long stirrup rider" then i'd feel like a 5. I kinda feel like "competent rider" means you can get on a horse that isn't insane and ride it around and demonstrate that you know your diagonals, leads, etc., have some independent muscle control, can hold your position, correctly use your aides and ride around a course of small obstacles (or whatever your disciplines introcutory level is) with full confidence and security. |

I would say about a 9.5 as there is more to learn to make me a better rider but.... I train others horses and show and breed and have been known to do vet work when there was no vet around. My loves are jumping, eventing, and dressage in that order. but Ihave done a lot of westren stuff as well. I know how to get it done and will get on most anything. I have been into horses for over 30 yrs, and have live all over the world working/riding horses. |
