We foal out 15-20 mares a year. By this time last year I had *two* beautiful fillies around. Our broodmares live out 24/7 in a pasture until 1 month out from foaling. Then they come in to a 1 acre paddock with a shed until they are starting to bag (not huge, just start dropping their udder). Well, until today everyone was still living outside! FINALLY, today I went out and saw that the first two mares are starting to bag up a bit. MissaMary got set up in the foaling stall tonight and Scarlet River in the first stall in the aisle. I would say MissaMary is a little late on track for her foaling date of 1/23, but Scarlet River is a little a head for her foaling date of 1/25. MissaMary foaled as soon as she waxed last year, but she really hardly has a bag right now. Of course <g> she was 7 days early last year too, so she might be working on this thing quickly. Although I didn't note it, I believe she progressed rather quickly towards foaling last year. Scarlet River foaled as soon as her vulva relaxed last year... and her vulva sure is relaxed now. I wish they would follow the same pattern every year, LoL. I write everything down like they do Of course, a picture. MissaMary and her filly... from 1/15/2006! ![]() No pictures of Scarlet River. LoL. She is a *plain* bay mare who had a *plain* bay filly. Scarlet River now has a 4 year old and a 5 year old at 'A' hunter barns - but she's so plain that it turns away the sporthorse buyers. Poor girl me standing there telling poeple, "no! her babies are really cute!"Anyone had a baby yet? I want new baby pictures to get me through this week:) ~Adrienne |

What a lovely mare and baby - look at all that chrome! I have to wait until May for the only foal we are expecting this year. It is late for a TB, but my stallion managed to injure his hock and seeing as it had to be live cover, let's just say he wasn't feeling up to it until the leg healed. |

awww Scarlet River is actually in the foaling stall now because I think she is going to beat MissaMary by a couple days Here is Scarlet River in her glory days ![]() Here is her daughter, Ash River (Mabel) ![]() I don't have a picture of the gelding because I sold him before I could market him! I went shopping for foaling supplies today... Now, the fun isn't in buying 20 enemas, it is what you buy WITH the 20 enemas. Mostly, it's tame. Some new 1 gallon buckets, paper towels. This year, I outdid myself. I was at K-Mart and decided I could really use a new bathroom mat. I leave it to them to ruminate on what happened to the old one

I actually bred them back to the same stallions, we were so happy with their babies last year. MissaMary is bred back to Sabona. Winnings: 26 Starts: 8 - 6 - 3, $861,844 At 4: Won Triple Bend H.; 2nd Mervyn Leroy H.(G2) At 5: Won Morvich H.; 3rd Mervyn Leroy H. (G2) At 7: Won Californian S. (G1); 2nd Breeders Cup Mile (G1), Hollywood Gold Cup (G1), Mervyn LeRoy H. (G1); 3rd Col. F.W. Koester H. (G3) One ToB there is a poster named Sabovee, she actually has a Sabona baby (Sabovee, lol) that she does dressage with. Sabona is 24 years old now and is a saggy old man, but this is what he used to look like: ![]() Check out that shoulder! Yum! Scarlet River has always had trouble putting size on her babies (her gelding was barely 16.1h and Mabel is 15.2h) but last year she had the BIGGEST leggiest filly so I prompty bred her back to Tough Call. Tough Call is by Deputy Minister out of a 2 time broodmare of the year and is a brother to 3 Grade I stakes winners. He broke his maiden at Churchill and after 8 starts shattered a seasmoid. We're wondering how well he is going to work in the breeding program because he is pretty hit or miss about what he produces. They are either *really* nice or not. He hasn't produced a really good racehorse yet, but our first set of babies by him will hit the track this year. I think the main thing with him is that you REALLY have to match him to what you are breeding to. He does much better with long necked-long backed mares, otherwise they are short in the neck and short in the back. Sabona improves every mare, Tough Call does not. The other stallion we use is Jim's old favorite Big Splash. Big Splash can hardly produce a racehorse to save his life. It's one of those BAD situations were someone is breeding by emotions rather than reality. The good thing? He produces AWESOME sporthorses. Mabel is a Big Splash baby. Actually, MissaMary is a Big Splash baby, he can do the racehorse thing every once in a while). This is another Big Splash (I love this horse, he's owned by someone on ToB and a stalk her for information about his progress, lol. Apparently they're going to start showing next month! Yay!) ![]() There is a lady down the road who does 'A's Adult Jumpers (Modified soon she hopes) and she actually bought that gelding's dam in foal to Sabona so we could breed her back to Big Splash. We planned on sending some mares to Kentucky this year but my boss has had some health problems this fall and he refuses to breed to anything he hasn't seen. I did have my heart set on breeding Vincamary (MissaMary's dam) to Pleasant Tap. He has kind of shied away from Kentucky stallions after he bred 4 mares to Roar and got 4 babies who could run... but had serious breathing problems. :/ ~Adrienne |

Ah, no <g> As usual on the first foals of the year I always jump the gun. By Feburary I will predict accurately
Oddly enough, I missed the births of the January babies last year. The first Gallie, I checked the video monitor at 12:30. At 1am she had foaled and the foal stood as I ran into the barn <_< Then MissaMary foaled at 7pm with just a touch of wax. I actually walked through the barn checking and was walking out when the foal nickered - she had foaled right by the door and had passed her placenta almost immmediately. So I looked in, saw broodmare with saggy belly and considered all normal. LoL. Scarlet River foaled last year in the evening with a touch of wax, too. I was going to stay up with her, but ran into the house to make dinner. I lazily checked the camera after being inside for ~45 minutes and, yup, the foal was up and nursing. I caught the 15 after that. LoL. In March, I went through the bizarre period in which 4 mares broke their water right in front of me while I was doing other things. I think part of the slowdown now in progress is because of the changes (coming in at night) and getting used to the lights on (need lights for camera). Mares are so weird. My foalwatcher was a bit.... eccentric and would spend all night in the aisle talking to the horses. So the mares started to all foal on her night off, lol. We must have had 9 babies born on Saturday, lol. I'm rambling but I do love foaling season
I need to get some milk test strips... I survived last year without them but I don't know how.~Adrienne |

ah enemas. The drugstore I go to has big bottles of generic enema that I just pour into the fleet enema bottles. I am sure they must wonder what kind of life (or what I do for a living) when I come in buying big bottles of enema and mineral oil. <_< Mabel is gorgeous. I think she would like to come live with me. I just have one mare foaling this year. My big pinto TB DutchX Sadie, aka Jeweller's Mark, in foal to A Fine Romance. She is huge, not due till end of April. She had a beautiful filly last year and was bred back. My other mare who was bred and checked in foal Tuppence II (a ** event mare) slipped her pregnancy, sadly. |

UPDATE FINALLY Scarlet River foaled Friday morning at 6am. Another plain bay filly  She is the *coolest* little baby I've met though. She adores people. I went in to rub the foal halter on and just ended up putting it on. No fit or really any interest at all. Picked up all four of her feet when the state-bred inspector came - no reaction except she almost fell down when she got bored and I still had one. She loves to be rubbed all over except right on the top of her butt - that's her bucking button Really. Cool. Baby. I'm happy MissaMary is officially miserable. She's been sweating on and off for about 4 days. Has wax, relaxed vulva, etc. She went NUTS when Scarlet River had hers... but she's holding on to it still. ~Adrienne |
