I need to get my guy more "roughage" as my hay supply is limited this year. A friend recommended beet pulp, but my guy just flings it around and dumps it. Any ideas on how to make it more palatable??

I soak mine in hot water and add 1/4 cup apple juice and chopped carrots. My mare looks at me like I am crazy when I forget the apple juice.

Get the shredded kind and soak it in either warm or cold water depending on the season. I actually just wet it down and feed right away. The shred absorb the water almost immediately. Start with just a small amount and gradually increase. My guys gave me the "What the heck have you done to our food" look the first few times I fed it. Now they LOVE the stuff. I feed the kind with molasses.

When I start a new horse on beet pulp, I soak it warm, with sweetfeed in it, then gradually lose the sweet feed. I kind of convince them that it is a mash. Eventually they'll eat it cold soaked, but I still like it warm in the winter.

Try adding salt. Skipper seems to like it better if it's steaming hot with about 1/3 scoop of electrolyte mix.

2 qts Beet Pulp. 2 qts Hay cubes and 2-4 cups Rice bran. Put it in a bucket (I use the cosequin buckets) fill to the top (really!) with warm water. Add salt if you want. Add their grain to it, put in a feed tub, mix well and tasty!
Like getting husbands to eat yogurt, it might take a bit of time, but they do love it when they try it more then once!
*he won't eat hummus, ever ever ever, tho...*

Are you kidding?? I LOFF hummus!!

I think I've figured it out. Add his hay cubes, a small handful of bran mash, a crunched up peppermint, teaspoon of molasses, and handful of the TC Complete I have left. He cleaned it up last night!!

I've never used rice bran...what's that for?

You could try "Speedy Beat" beet pulp from the Uk. It sets up in 10 min. the horses seem to like it. Wish I could get it here in the west coast for reasonable amount.

me Too! The Best Football snack ever!

Rice bran is a fattning food- and helped balance out the entire meal, from what I understand. They seem to love it, too- and when you mix the whole sloppy mess, mmmmmmgood!

Taco is on a long-term stall rest situation- and its going to be that mix for him for months. I (as well as he) loves the peppermint idea! Thanks!

Yeah, he definitely doesn't need to get fatter, but he loffs his peppermints!!! I bought one of those weird Pampered Chef food chopper things at a yard sale for $4. I use that to crush the peppermints. Works awesome.

Some just won't eat beet pulp no matter what you do to it. If nothing seems to work for you could try feeding Ultium www.ultium.com
