Do you use them, and do they actually work?

I have used Magnetic products for years, but have never really decided if the results I have seen were due in any part to the use of the magnets, or just the "program" the individual horse was in brought about the changes.

Placebo, or not?

Placebo, IMHO.
I had a Nikken person lay some on me some years back--I tried them on myself--really *hoping* they'd work.

Sadly, all they do is hold notes on the fridge...

We tried the Centurion hoof magnet pad for John. We didn't see any results from it, but then again, the problem may not have been in his feet. Had we been able to keep them longer we would have tried them on another horse who definitely did have pain in that area (significant navicular changes) to see if it helped him, but the trial period didn't permit that kind of experimentation.

Tried 'em on Avery when he was at his worst. Zero results. Decided my money was far better spent on massage, which did have quantifiable results.

We use them. I don't think they are the be all answer to anything serious, but I also don't feel they hurt. Do they do everything they say...no, but in many cases ANY help in a non invasive form is welcome. I DO like the Centurian hoof pad, and we did see visible results from it on an FEI horse that probably would not have been able to pass the jog well otherwise. I think that the magnetic bell boots increase growth of the hoof, but probably are limited in their ability to ease pain in the area. Magnets will certainly warm up an area temperature wise, and can be helpful in the form of a blanket or hock boots in reducing the time it takes for an oldtimer to get the initial stiffness out in warm up.

I think it's likely bunk. :lonely:

I worked for a woman who was a big Nikken rep (aiming for that top of her stupid pyramid I do believe) who pushed them down everybody's throats. Hence, Ihave a few Nikken vests and etc.
I wear the vest just b/c I have them and to stay warm and b/c they're barnwear.

I"d rather spend my money, as War Admiral (!!) pointed out, on more quantifiable results.
(And no I didn't buy the stuff- she stole the money from my VISA card :argh: so I kept the damn things!!!)

Thanks -

Like van - Idon't think they are a cure-all, but I have mostly used the blanket. In particular on one that had a SI injury, and also a track mare that would always start out cold-backed.

I have had relatively good luck with the magnets, it also depends if you are getting a fresh injury or and old one, they do not have the same results with the old, I had fantastic results with a bog spavin, so much so my vet borrowed the hock wraps to try himself.

I have magnetic wraps and I don't know if they helped or not, the one time I used them.

That all being said....

I have had a few MRI's over the years, and my injured area DID feel better after the MRI, at first I thought it was silly, then thought about it after the second time it happened - being magnetic resonance imaging. duh, so maybe magnets DO help.

Yes, but (no pun intended), MRIs are many orders of magnitude greater than static magnets.

I don't dispute the possibility that magnetic fields can have biological effects, but glorified refrigerator magnets just aren't strong enough to do anything.

Ghazzu true, but if you could get a wrap/blanket etc with a decent magnet, then I could see that it helped.

I have used magnets on my knees before, and the magnets def. helped with the pain. I took magnets out of a wrap for my horse, and taped them to my knees overnight. I used to have severe knee pain as I was lying in bed- it was a complication from Lyme's Disease. My knees rarely hurt anymore.

We have a Centurion blanket and hoof pad in the barn. I don't know what I think about it. I was told that it doesn't work if the horse has cortisteroids in their system. There again, I don't know if thats true or not. They have lots of the horses under the blanket and on the hoof pad, but I never use it on my horse. I tried it a time or two to see if it would help him relax and I was underwhelmed with it. Everyone swears the horses relax with it on, but if you stood just about anything in the crossties for 30min-hr under a heavy blanket I bet they would stand still. There is one particular horse that paces in the grooming stall but stands still with the blanket on. I think it would be interesting to put it on him and not plug it in and see what happened.

Ghazzu, what do you think about the systems that create elecromagnetic fields, instead of static magnets?

The vet that I go to that does strictly alternative medicine swears by the magnet blanket from Schneiders. We bought it for a horse that had stifle issues and thus back pain. We would put it on for 30 minutes before we rode to loosen him up and then 30 minutes after and it helped him tremendously. You could tell if an acupressure point was "hot" (my understanding of pain) when you took the blanket off of him and only certain spots where the magnets had been (and not every spot where a magnet was) had either a change in hair direction or a sweaty spot. I would not believe it if I hadn't seen it! So I vote for this product at least!
