Mr Trainer wants me to lunge in this when dtr is off to college. Dover also has one, has anyone used them? Is it worth the extra $$ for the Pessoa over the Dover brand?

I've only used the Pessoa one but I love it. You do need to use it carefully as you can easily overwork a horse in it. When I have the need to use it I use it 1-2x/week for not more than 15 minutes, including walking.

What do you love about it? What specifically is different about it compared to side reins, neck stretcher, chambon, etc.? I've also been eyeing this product and wondering if it's legit or just another gimmick.

This is true, however I have no opinion on comparing the versions that are out there. We have the original pessoa and I have not had the opportunity to examine the knock offs.

Once you figure out how to put the thing on, is there a lot of adjustments that need to be made? I'll be only using it on one horse. How long do you lunge in it? I'm assuming wtc? I'm to get a lesson on what to do, but don't even know where to start with questions.

Countryhawk, you will want to introduce him slowly to the pessoa...walk/trot only until you see him really figuring out his balance, and travelling with equal integrity both directions. Start with the lowest setting (back to the lowest ring on your surcingle...if you don't have a very low ring, then get a new surcingle that does have one). To introduce a horse that has not worn one before, you will want a second person to help you as some are quite startled by the piece that goes behind their rear end. Make sure you are in the work area and not on a cement surface in case the horse jumps forward suddenly. Adjust the rear piece so that it hangs above his hocks, mid way up his gaskin. That way if he kicks out, or bucks he will not get hung up in it. I usually tie up the rest of the rigging and let them warm up a little with just the rear done up...it will encourage forward movement but let them get any kinks out of their necks. When you are ready to do it up, you will want to do it so there is tension when the horse has his head about 20 degrees in front of the vertical. Let him get used to that for awhile. Eventually you will change the settings to compliment what you are trying to do. There will be an explanation that comes with it on the different level "frames" they can work in. I have yet to use the highest setting, and believe it would possibly only benefit and be suited to a true upper level Dressage horse. Don't overdo the work...you can accomplish a lot just by variations of transitions, spiralling in and out, etc. I have had some that worked once a week in it for over three months before I would even let them canter!

Thanks Van. Hopefully he'll tolerate it, and I'll go slow with it.

I always wondered about those, after seeing a friends trainer do something odd with polo wraps and...well it was different than anything I'd seen. The horse definitely carried himself in a much better fashion after.

The pessoa doesnt' cost much more than the dover generic though!

with the Pessoa you need to also buy the surcingle and bridle/bit. It comes with Dover's brand. so it ends up about half the cost.
