Rachel, Anita M posted this on CoTH: OPF has posted the following information on their website: EQUINE HERPES VIRUS RUMOR CONTROL Updated 1-7-07 Sunday December 30, 2006 to Friday January 5, 2007 the horses stabled at AOPF’s indoor arena were exposed to a four-year-old gelding who had been exposed December 28th and 29th to a barn wherein a horse subsequently showed an elevated EHV-1 titer. That horse had been tested December 22nd and results received January 2nd midday. As soon as we were made aware of the positive test results, the four-year-old was returned to that original barn. At AOPF we are taking no comfort from that fact that our exposure was “twice removed.” The four-year-old gelding continues to show no symptoms while we anxiously wait for blood and nasal swab results to be returned. This virus is embedded in the North American horse population and currently we are seeing outbreaks in Northern California, Colorado, Florida and recently in New Jersey. Horses are sociable herd animals and this is a disease of association. Our virus management plan includes a self-imposed quarantine until January 19th provided that no horses show any symptoms nor positive tests. This means horses stabled at AOPF will need to stay here and no outside horses will be brought onto the farm to stable, for lessons or for cross country schooling. We have divided the farm horses into three groups: (1) horses stabled in the indoor; (2) horses stabled in the mare barn; and (3) horses living outside 24/7. For many years we have been frustrated by splits between paddocks since it doubles the weed-eating. Now we are grateful. Katie Yeiser (443-803-7079) and Barrett Warner (540-222-0882) are responsible for the nine horses stabled in the indoor and have no contact with other horses on the farm. Julia Wendell (410-236-1601) is responsible for the two horses living in the mare barn as well as the 16 horses living outside. Horses in the indoor and the mare barn are temped in the morning and afternoon. Horses at the high end of normal are re-temped at night check. As of Monday January 8th we have not seen any elevated temperatures. The balance of our effort is spent disinfecting barn areas and observing the horses for behavioral changes. Do they graze comfortably uphill as well as downhill? Are they reluctant to roll but wanting to at the same time? Do they shake vigorously after rolling? Do they have difficulty masticating? When picking out hind feet do they return their hooves securely and confidently underneath themselves? Etc. There are several steps we are not doing as long as we continue not to have an EHV-1 positive horse on site: Feed deliveries are brought to the barn rather than left at the end of the driveway; and farriers and vets continue to treat routine and emergency calls. We will be trying to update our website on a daily basis to keep everyone aware of what we’re doing. Regards, Barrett and Julia http://otherwiseperfectfarm.com/farmnews_frame.html -------------------------------------------- Seems like they are exercising good judgment and taking reasonable precautions to minimize the risks. I hope none of their horses or those at the track (although they don't state so, that is where I believe the "original barn" is located based on the information I heard) are, in fact, infected. However, what an "elevated titer" means or implies is a mystery to me. It was very good of them to post this. This is a serious disease and rumors do spread quickly. I am happy that see the threat seems less than I originally heard. The only weird thing I noticed in their article, is how can they state "As of Monday January 8th we have not seen any elevated temperatures"? Since this is only SUNDAY 1/7, seems a bit premature, dontcha think? |

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA people-- I hate to bring bad news, but after I airily told everyone to calm down about going to Thermal (HITS), I received this message from a very responsible person yesterday, Jan. 7: <<A pony, recently shipped from Connecticut (and remember the Fairfield Equine had a positive last week), tested POSITIVE last week. It is at Meadow Grove, with Dick Carvin and Susie Schroer. MG is at Middle Ranch, a HUGE facility. Sadly, I know this to be true because I had a horse being tried at another barn on the complex and he cannot come home or be tried by anyone else because of the positive. Even more sadly, a number scumbag trainers shipped horses out of MR on Saturday to avoid a mandatory quarantine. This has been confirmed by the vet and several other trainers at MR. Sadly, they were planning on disclosing late next week when the second test (being done on Tuesday) is processed. As I understand it, the pony got quite sick. It was tested and the nasal swab was positive, the blood negative. It is being treated for EHV-1 and Meadow Grove has implemented quarantine protocol. I think that this is like being a little pregnant and I have a hunch that more than a few exposed horses will show up at Thermal. You make the call, but it's important to get accurate information, which is tough.>> |

I'm more curious about the original source of the horses from Germany! Do you think this came over in a bubble? As it is, more imports are coming over sitting a short quarantine and going stateside to any farm or show ground..untracked!!! I'm thinking we have been more vigilant now that this strain has hit our shores. Do you have a good feeling about this stopping this EHV-1 outbreak because we are stomping on the fires here? I don't think I trust that for now. Has any reporting come out of Europe? I've missed it if it has! I talked to a few trainers who are used to "Buying the Brand made in Europe"...seems they are reconsidering sources here in the states. At least here...if you shop with breeders...you will have a full medical history and likely have less chance of a lethal exposure... Buy American..from a Breeder! Okay this is where I duck!!!! |

You don't have to duck here. We have quite a few American or Canadian breeders here on TOC and they feel the same way. It's because I live in CT, that I wonder where that pony came from. |

I only know what I've posted--that the pony came from Connetticutt. I DID call my own vets, as their practice includes Middle Ranch area, and tell them to be careful..so will report back if I hear any more. What worries me are the horses that shipped out of Middle Ranch in order to escape the quarantine. I DID email HITS with the same information, suggesting/asking for a protocol for shipping in to their showgrounds. I am hoping if enough people ask them, maybe they will do something. |

Irish Eis, that is the most concise, informative article I have seen on the topic. Thank you for posting the link. I recall reading about the outbreak at the track in NJ in October when we were looking at TBs and I have to wonder if it is somehow related. I have a concern about east coast shippers who do the north south run. We board our horse where a shipper keeps his van and I have seen the driver wheel in and just walk into the barn to use the rest rooms...no changing clothes, boots, or use of disinfectant that I have seen. Perhaps he is disinfecting the van and we just don't see it, but does anybody else think I am not crazy to be worried that he might carry the germs into the barn? How strict are they in FL about allowing horses to leave the state? I hope we have seen the worst of this outbreak, but I also fear that it may be the beginning of something very bad, especially if people are trying to avoid the quarantines. |
