Tim Dutta was the transport for the original typhoid mary pony from quarentine (not that there is any "'fault" it just was that transport I did read it somewhere..not a secret) I wish the horse shows were more user friendly to this situation..put in your entries dont go, pay dearly....put in your entries late, pay dearly :brickwall: ....maybe they coud be just a bit more understanding that we arent being rediculous we are being cautious!
PS it is all Harrys fault I am here...couldnt take the COTH anymore... :mallet: Lead follow or get banned while watching football on TV.....

Isn't it always about the money?

There was a rather widespread pigeon fever outbreak here in Colorado this fall, and right smack in the middle of it, a local vet gave the okay for people to ship in horses to an expo. God forbid the sale of a horse didn't go through because of some pesky little bacteria.

Here in NJ my vet is reccomending revac every 60 days at this point. Hopefully it will help a little tho it can't prevent it from occuring..

As someone who works with infections for a living and has been on a infection control committe. :P there are a few problems that I see.

1. if it were a straight up either you have it or not infection, that quaranteeing a horse for 28 days coming into the country, you'd be past the 'magic 21 day' span that has been mentioned several times. So life would be easy then. Tho importing would be a lot more expensive, but the gain for the rest of us, may be worth it.

2. It seems to be you can carry it and have it never bother you, but either be contagious or have it explode and affect you in times of stress, ie shipping. Which for these horses, sitting still in a barn for 28 days, won't make a difference. They still may be infected and not show it when they leave.

3. if you swabbed every horse around, I'm not sure what you'd get, I have heard that a lot of horses would test positive and not be ill. Then what would the regal we do?

I think you DO have to do the quaranteen for more than 21 days, that is the only thing we have at the moment to try to stop this, and get it under control.

The pharmacutical companies have NOT been helping the vets, they are closed mouthed trying to get the vaccine or cure and don't want to share secrets that they have learned about EHV so far.

This is the Wellington update from the Sun-Sentinel (including play on words in the headline):

Can someone answer a few questions for me? Is this virus always deadly? What makes it deadly or not? Also, how contagious is it? While I am not showing until Spring, a horse at my barn does ship to a barn for weekly lessons and this barn is actively showing in Mass/Ct. What is the liklihood it can be brought back to my barn and infect my ponies? Are there ways to protect my horse (super cleaning stalls, etc?)

I am not an expert by any means, Silk, but I have been reading alot of the information.

I think that - OOPS!! I forgot what I was going to say.... YIKES!!!

OK - got it.....

I have heard that most horses have the anti bodies of EHV 1 in their systems, and therefore they get it at any time. Usually, EHV is a virus that causes fever and cold symptoms, and will run its course before you know what they have.

For some reason, some horses will get the neuro version which is what is down in FLorida. This kind is activated by stress, say from shipping, heavy training or show life. Even this kind is not always deadly if caught quickly and you are lucky, I think I've read that they are trying some new treatments that have been working, however, it seems that if your horse has the neuro vaariety and goes down with the hind end paralysis, there is very little hope.

Theorectically, any horse can get it at any time.

I think that it is pretty contagious based on the number of horses that have gotten in Fla.

I think that new horses coming into a barn should be quarantined as a general rule, though you can't do that for horses that are out showing and come back to their home barn.

I think going forward, all barns should follow the basic biosanitary rules that have been posted plus common sense to prevent your horses from becoming sick.

For me, because of the case at my vet clinic, I am planning on NOT shipping out for training or shows until the 21 day incubation window has passed with no new cases.

I am wondering about giving them the booster, because I would like to get back to showing sometime this year....

I think the www.faep.org website has a lot of good information, also www.cthorsecouncil.org had some great links

PM64 - a booster is probably a good idea. Vets in Wellington were suggesting it to their clients.

My vet in NJ is having us revacinate every 60 days at this point. If you are staying at home with no traffic in or out I don't think he is having them vacinate.
