As an assignment for English class, we had to write a poem in rhyming couplets describing a pilgrimage. Since it's so darn long, and doesn't go with the rest of my poetry as this is more of a story in poem form, I've given it its own topic.

Here it is.

"Spring Broke"
by Will Nettles

My story I’ll state, both loudly and clear
A journey that took place my senior year.
Along with five friends, my closest comrades
We each left our homes, left our moms and dads.
For New York City, we soon departed
Hoping that when we returned, we’d partied
With the young, rich, and famous socialites
Sleep through the days, have fun every night.
We packed up and left, the week of Spring Break.
The car would not start! Oh, what a headache!
“Did you check the oil?” young Cooper inquired.
And Brittany then asked, “And what of the tires?”
“Leave him alone, he’s done everything right,”
Defended Taylor. “We checked it last night.”
Two others sat in the back, sleeping sound.
The four of us paced, our thoughts spinning round.
“Give it one more try,” Taylor suggested.
We hoped, so soon, we would not be bested.
I got in the front, I twisted the key.
Behold, it did start! We shouted with glee!
Boat and Quiara awoke from the noise
But we did not care, we expressed our joys!
The rest got in, we got situated.
It looked, to us, like this trip was fated.
To my very right sat Coop, age sixteen.
A sweet young boy, though he tried to be mean.
His dark hair was short, and hid ‘neath a hat.
A slim boy, though seeming to think he was fat.
On his right side sat Brittany, called Wigglez.
From her point of view, everything tickles.
And though she is black, she has white-girl hair
And many a boy a crush on her shares.
Behind her, a girl named similarly.
Brittney, who was called Boat regularly.
Silly and funny and quite a good friend.
(Except when she whined ‘bout her large rear end.)
To the left of Boat’s rear was Quiara
As pretty as the finest tiara
Despite being equipped with a smart mouth
(Her accent was clearly straight from the south.)
To her other side, Taylor Lancaster.
At acting quite pure, she was a master.
Though pure she was not, as someone she stalks
Sniffing his hair when close to her he walks.
Driving the car on this journey was me
Adjusting my glasses so I could see.
Tall as I was, I hit the car’s ceiling
Nervous excitement’s what I was feeling.

“Now we depart!” I shouted finally.
“I hope we don’t die,” I thought silently.
We plugged in my iPod and cranked it up.
My five comrades to the music did jump
Driving for hours, we never were stopped
The music so loud, our ears should’ve popped.
Then straight from the rear, I heard a loud roar.
“Stop now or Taylor might pee on the floor!”
Quiara was almost sitting on top of Boat
Her arms wrapped tightly around Boaty’s throat.
Coop started laughing, and then so did I
Taylor looked as though she might nearly cry.
At the nearest rest stop we all got out,
Stretching and peeing and walking about.
Wigglez just danced, and a couple guys stared
The whole way back to the car, Taylor glared.
Once we were back in, our trip we resumed
But the whole way, silent, Taylor just fumed.
I turned down the music and asked, “What’s wrong?
I don’t think you’ve ever been mute this long.”
She thought a moment but finally she said,
“Nothing, I’ve just got some stuff in my head.”
Time passed for a while, and soon it got dark.
A few more hours, and I’d have to park.
It was then Wigglez asked, “Where do we sleep?”
“Beside the road?” “Yeah, but what about creeps!”
“Were all just minors, we can’t get a room.”
Then, from the sky, came a crackling boom.
Shouted Quiara, “Let’s find someplace now!”
“Just find somewhere, Will, I think I know how
to fool those morons, quick, on the double!”
“But Boat,” I said, “won’t we get in trouble?”
“I know what to do,” she said, “so just go.”
I did, though her plan I still didn’t know.
Some cheap local motel was where I stopped.
Boat and I ran out, we practically hopped
To the door and then she raced to the clerk.
I hoped her idea would easily work.
“We need a room fast,” she hurriedly tried
Then with great skill, she convincingly cried.
“He’s my fiancé, tomorrow’s the day
We’re to be married, but not if we’re late
We’re desperate for sleep, but we’ll pay your fee.”
With pleading eyes, she glanced over to me.
“It’s true,” I said, “We’ve got money with us.”
To our great surprise, he did it no fuss.
I paid for the room, and we got the key
And quickly departed, both full of glee.
By then it was pouring, soon we were wet
But over the moisture, we did not fret.
I drove the car round over to the door.
We ran in, dropping our things on the floor.
A one-bed room was all we could manage,
So surely our backs would take some damage.
Cooper and Boat volunteered for the ground
So on the bed we four huddled round.
As tired as we were, we fell asleep fast
But for a long time, it did not seem to last.
Bright and early, we travelers awoke
Until we’d had breakfast, none of us spoke.
We traveled along the rest of the day
And soon we had traveled quite a long way.
When the sun set, we saw something pretty
A glorious sign said, “New York City.”
So now we are here, who knows what we’ll do.
All I know is it will end way too soon.
