It was the middle of the night. Trippy lay sleeping, curled against Ace in her Detroit home. It was the dead time of night, when the world is seemingly still, time does not pass, and all the witching things of the darkness emerge to do their twisted deeds. The couple slept soundly, Trippy’s arms folded protectively around her stomach, which showed her to be roughly seven and a half months pregnant. The world all around them was silent and still. Her pregnancy had been a good one. Her last checkup revealed they would be having a baby girl, and she was healthy and coming along well. Suddenly Trippy awoke with a sharp gasp and she clutched her stomach in pain. She fought with the blankets, waking Ace in the process, and between more moans of pain, made it to the bathroom to vomit. Trippy: “ACE!” She called to him through tears and then rinsed her mouth and stumbled back to into the adjoining bedroom, and gasped again, Trippy: “Ace!” He’d already been on his way to her when she called for him, the second time. He’d took the time to throw on his jeans and shirt from the day before that were on the floor, he knew he’d be driving her to the hospital. He met her at the bathroom door. Ace: “Trippy! Sweetheart, what’s wrong? What’s happening.” He we pulling her to him, and she was sobbing, when she suddenly screamed again, a new burst of hot tears flowing from her green eyes. She doubled over, and would have hit the floor in pain if Ace weren’t holding her up by the shoulders. She sobbed and bore through the pain that washed over her. When it started to fade she gasped. Trippy: “I don’t know. I think the baby is coming though.” Her voice was cracked, a mix of the pain and the tears. Ace’s face went from one of total concern to fear. Ace: “Dear god, its way too early!” Trippy: “Ace, we have to go! NOW!” He nodded and helped her out of the room and down the stairs. Willow followed them cautiously, unsure of what was going on, but smart enough to know now was not a good time to play. He quickly threw his own coat on, and then helped Trippy with hers, and with her Vans. Then it was to the garage where he put her in his car and pulled out. As he sped down the road, with Trippy still doubled over, crying from the pain, he called the hospital, frantically alerting them to who he was and what was going on. They had money, and they knew the risks of Trippy’s pregnancy. When he reached the emergency room, the hospital staff was already ready for them. She was placed in a chair and wheeled through the hospital quickly to the maternity ward, where a private room was already waiting. A nurse closed the door behind everyone, telling Ace gently that Trippy was safe now, but he might want to wait outside. He did as he was told, and sat in a chair, frazzled, and full of fear. What if she lost the baby? What is he lost her! He had no idea what he’d do without Trippy. At least if that poor, beautiful, little baby was taken from them, they’d have each other still, but he couldn’t handle not having both. He leaned forward, elbows on his knees, and held his face in his hands. In the private room, the two doctors and few nurses worked quickly with Trippy. She was already fully dilated, and a C-section at this point was out of the question. She was in too much pain, and in too delicate of a state to drug. They had no idea what was going to happen, but they prayed they could save both mother and child. A large nurse had given her hand to Trippy, to squeeze, but the wrestler held on so hard with the next painful contraction the woman was forced to scream as well. When she pulled her hand away, she looked and saw bruises forming on her hand in the shape of Trippy’s fingers, and her fingers bent oddly. Her hand had been broken seemingly with little effort. The hospital staff worked hard to calm her, while the doctors reached into her and tried to coax the little baby out. The next contraction was more painful than the last, and she screamed as loud as she could, through hot tears, calling with all her might, physically and emotionally for Ace. He’d heard her scream his name, and was quickly through the door and by her side. He took her hand in his, and when she squeezed he winced, but held his composure. His other hand went to her forehead and gently brushed away her hair as he spoke quickly and quietly, trying to console her. Ace: “It’s going to be okay Sweetheart. It hurts, I know. But its going to be okay. We love each other and this baby. Things are going to turn out alright, I promise you. Take a deep breath now, and on your next contraction, when you scream, push our little angle out with all your might, so that the doctors can take care of her and you.” He kept talking to her as she cried uncontrollably, knowing that the best worse case scenario would be losing the baby, the worst case, her dying as well. Another contraction, as painful as the last. She squeezed Ace’s hand, screaming and pushing like he told her. Ace winced again and then suddenly gasped sharply. How was it this beautiful, tiny woman had such a strong grasp? He shook it off, and held steady. Her head fell back to the pillow and she closed her eyes and cried hard, the tears from pain, fear, frustration, regret, sadness, and heartbreak, forcing themselves out uncontrollably. The physical pain she could handle, it was the emotional torture she couldn’t deal with. She just wanted to roll up on her side and curl into a ball in Ace’s arms. A wave of heat hit her entire body, followed by one of pain and another scream, and then the doctors getting really excited as the tiny baby girl slipped from Trippy’s womb and into the world. The baby had a small cry but was overridden by Trippy’s scream as the afterbirth forced itself out as well. Trippy blacked out, her only escape from the pain she was suffering. Ace watched her, fear evident in his features but then his attention was turned to the little baby. The doctors had cut the cord and were cleaning her up. A nurse went to him, he hadn’t let go of her hand. Nurse: “Mister Andrews? We are going to put the baby in an incubator. Being born so early, its not a good idea to keep her out at the moment. I think you should go get some coffee while we clean up and waken your wife.” He opened his mouth to correct her, but figured it didn’t matter. He nodded, and kissing Trippy’s head, left the room. When he returned they were still with Trippy, so he waited outside. When he was finally allowed to enter he grabbed a chair, brought it by her bed, and sat, once more taking her hand in his. The nurse left, telling him she’d be back in a little bit, and that she hadn’t woken but she was stirring, so to see if he could get her to wake up. When they were alone he rested his forehead on the hand he held. Ace: “Come on Sage, wake up baby. Please? Don’t leave me. Open you’re beautiful green eyes and let me see the life they’ve always been so full of.” He pleaded with her for several minutes, tearing up and but holding it back. He couldn’t lose her too, and that’s exactly what he thought was going to happen. Just then she whimpered. He lifted his head quickly and looked over at her. She was frowning, her closed eyes shutting tighter then loosening up again. He watched her, gently coaxing her to wake up, for him. The long minutes passed, he never took his eyes from her now pale face, and she didn’t stop moving or whimpering as she clawed her way up through the darkness. Her eyes were closed but she knew that she was in a bright, well lit room. She was so tired, but she wanted to open her eyes. She had to struggle hard to open them, and then started to panic that she’d never be able to. Then Ace’s gentle voice sounded in her ears. She fought some more, she didn’t know how long, and slowly, very slowly, she managed to blink her eyes open, her dark lashes fluttering against her cheeks. The first thing she saw was Ace’s face, going form concern to a relieved smile. He raised her hand, the one he hadn’t let go of, and held the back of it to his cheek. Ace: “Oh, god Sweetheart, you had me so scared.” Tears filled her eyes as she turned her hand and held his cheek. She pulled him closer to her and wrapped her other arm around him, hugging him. She needed it and so did he. He hugged her back and held her close. After a few moments she pulled away and looked into his eyes. Trippy: “Ace? The baby?” Ace: “In the premature room. They have her in an incubator.” He kissed her forehead. Ace: “You were marvelous, Trippy. I don’t know exactly what you suffered, but if your screams and tears were any indication, I’m going to say there is no chance in hell I’d have been able to do it. You bruised my hand, and I think you may have broken a nurse’s.” She looked worried and examined his hand. Trippy: “Are you okay? I didn’t hurt you did I?” Ace: “Yes, you did, but it was worth it, and I have been through worse. How are you feeling Sweetheart?” Trippy: “Tired, and thirsty, and hungry, and scared.” Ace: “I’m scared too, love.” Trippy: “I want to see her.” Ace: “You will, but right now you need to stay here.” He reached over and pushed the nurse call button. A moment later the nurse came in, and smiled at them. Nurse: “You’re up! I thought you might come back to us if he gave it a go. You’re a strong woman; you broke Nurse Doreen’s hand before your husband came in.” Trippy: “Oh, he’s not my husband.” She said then as an afterthought, added, Trippy: “..At least not yet. He’s simply the love of my life.” The nurse smiled, and stood on the other side of Trippy’s bed. She felt her forehead, and checked her pulse. Nurse: “I see. Now, how are you feeling? I expect you’re tired.” Trippy: “Yes, I am, and in a lot of pain. And I’m starving.” Nurse: “I’ll have some food brought up, and now that you’re awake, I think you’ll do okay with a shot of morphine.” She paged for an orderly, and when he came instructed him to bring up some food. Then she left and returned with a needle. Trippy saw it, her eyes went wide and the turned to bury her face in Ace. She hated needles, couldn’t stand them. Ace knew this, and grabbing her arm, held it out for the nurse. It was over before it had begun and Ace told her that she could look again. The nurse smiled down at her. Nurse: “You’ve been through a great deal. Rest now, and later you can see the beautiful baby girl you just brought into the world.” She turned to go but stopped in the door. Nurse: “Oh, have you a name for her yet?” They didn’t. Trippy had refused to pick names till she had the baby. She shook her head. Nurse: “Alright.” The woman left and Trippy fell back into her pillows. Trippy: “I don’t want to name her if we’re going to lose her. It’ll be so much harder.” Ace: “Yes, but wouldn’t you rather be able to visit a marked grave of a child born of love, than an unnamed grave?” Trippy: “Yes. What do you think? What names do you like?” They discussed several names for baby girls as Trippy ate her meal, then went to sleep, content that Ace was watching over her. When she woke, he was asleep in the chair beside her. She smiled and watched him. He was so tired, and she could still see the worry on his face. She didn’t know how long she gazed at him but then he creaked open his eyes. When he saw her he jumped sitting up straight. Ace: “Oh, I crashed! How long have I been asleep?” Trippy: “A while I’m guessing. Ace?” She was frowning slightly. Ace: “Yes?” Trippy: “When the baby is strong enough, will you mind terribly, if I go back to wrestling, with you? We can stay in just one of the houses, and return home right after shows, so she’s not moved around so much. It wouldn’t be for a while still, but I’d like to know what you think of it. I want to wrestle again, I’ve been going nuts. I want to go back as soon as I can, within reason.” Ace sighed. He'd been afraid she'd ask him that. Ace: "Sweetie, you know I'd love for you to come back to the ring, and you know I'd never say you’re not allowed to do anything. But maybe, just maybe, it isn't a good time for you to come back yet. I love you, you know I do, and I want you as close to me as often as possible, but the fact is that we've got a little bundle of love in there that's going to need ALL our attention.” She sighed, and started getting angry. The morphine was still running strong and she wasn’t thinking correctly, so she mistook Ace’s words, thinking he thought she was actually asking for his permission. Trippy: “I know that! It wouldn’t be for a very long time, like I said. I don’t plan on leaving that little girl any time soon. And it wasn’t your permission I was asking for Ace. I was asking if, when it WAS okay, when she and I were both stronger, and what not, if you would have a problem with it. If you’d be upset at all. I don’t need yours or any ones permission. So knowing or not whether you’d say I‘m allowed doesn‘t matter, it wasn’t even my point.” Ace sighed and looked away, before looking back at Trippy. Ace: "I'm sorry. I heard your question wrong, and that was my fault. Would I have a problem with you coming back? Yes and No. On the one hand, having you close would be...well awesome. But on the other hand, having you close is another target for the guys to aim at and distract me. Look at Matt Morris. I mean, the bastard went and pissed on my mother’s grave. Do you think, if there was the slightest chance it'd throw me off my game, someone wouldn't try and use you to get to me. I Love You Sweetheart and I know you can look after yourself. These are just my concerns." She smiled softly and took his hand in hers. Trippy: “It’s not about you Baby, that I’m asking this. I don’t want to go back to be closer to you, that’s just an added bonus. I want to go back to wrestle again. And what could any douche bag like Morris do to use me against you? What do you think I could do to him? You’re over analyzing this, Love. You didn’t have a problem with me being there before, anyone could have tried then, so what’s so different about it now? What’s really keeping you from saying you don’t mind and will support me one-hundred percent? What aren’t you telling me?” Ace: “It’s nothing, Love. I’m just, concerned about the distance, and traveling. New mothers have a hard time leaving their babies. You will too. And despite what you say, that could affect your wrestling, and the worry could affect your health. I’m just concerned about us, you especially, being so far away from her, that’s all.” Trippy instantly perked up. Trippy: “Oh my god, Ace that’s it! I’ve got it!” Ace: “Herpes?” She giggled and hit him playfully as he grinned back. Trippy: “No you brat!” She turned to him and grabbed his arm, like a child tugging on its mother’s arm begging for candy. Trippy: “Ace! Let’s get another house! In Chicago! In a safe neighborhood, but close to the arena. Then we won’t be traveling away from her at all!” Ace grabbed her face in his hands and kissed her hard. Ace: “That’s a wonderful idea, Sweetheart! I’ll get Lemmy to scout out some potentials for us tomorrow, alright?” She smiled. Trippy “Sounds good, Ace. Then you won’t have any misgivings about it when I do eventually go back to the ring, right?” Ace: “Not a one.” “Good.” She examined him some and stroked his cheek. Trippy: “Go get something to eat; you’ve had a long night.” Ace: “Like you’re one to talk.” Trippy: “I’ve had a more restful sleep than you too, and plan on sleeping more once you‘re gone. Go eat, call your father and mine, and tell those wily old coots they’re grandpa’s to a beautiful baby girl. Call Lexi too, for me too please? I know she’s been concerned lately. She told me a few weeks back that I wasn’t going to make it to my eighth month. So let her know what’s happened too please?” Ace: “Sure thing, Trips. I’ll be back a little later then.” He stood and turned to go but she gently grabbed his hand. He turned and looked down at her to see her looking back, full of love. Trippy: “I love you, Ace.” He bent and kissed her gently. Ace: “I love you too Trippy. Get some rest now.” This time he did leave. Two days later Ace and Trippy left the hospital, with their baby girl. Alessa Skye Andrews had been born into the world a month early, on May 26th 2009. She was strong and healthy despite her tiny size, and she was a happy baby, loved by both of her parents. |
