It was demonstrated in the attempted Chrono Trigger Resurrection project, which was forcibly terminated by Square Enix via cease and desist letter. The game's director Masato Kato left Square Enix to freelance in 2002, shortly after the release of the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI. However, he worked with Square Enix on three Seiken Densetsu games, which the Children of Mana, Dawn of Mana, and Heroes of Mana. If Square Enix is going to do a Chrono Trigger remake, they should make it for a Sony platform, such as PS2, PSP, or PS3, not for a Nintendo handheld such as Nintendo DS (the GBA has already gone the way of the dodo). Kato might return to direct the remake.
