Tone of voice is one of the hardest things to convey in text. Any of you who've talked to me on IM, made an obvious joke, only for me to take you seriously because I can't see your body language or hear your tone know this very well. The same is, of course, true for our characters, maybe moreso because a lot of them have supernatural voice effects and the like. Obviously, you can just write out that the bard is singing or describe a voice, but this is...somehow lacking in style sometimes. This is one of the biggest strengths of comic books as a medium, the way speech bubbles, and the endless variety of graphical effects you can put in them with font and color options, allow voices to be conveyed in a VISUAL way. We've sort of been doing that here for a while now, in small ways, conventions like bold text for god-speak and italics for telepathy have become common forms of notation. some people use special text colors in places, but I'm happy to report this idea can be taken a step further. Let's face it, the default selection of fonts on this board is crappy, and for a long time I thought using custom fonts was not technically possible without paid addons to the board but it seems there's a workaround for that. You CAN do it....but it requires everybody have the font on their computer, installed in their fonts folder to see it, or they'll just see the regular default text. This enables all sorts of stylistic options, visual voice effects, other languages, codes, some pretty imaginative stuff. But for it to work, obviously people have to play along and actually get the fonts, so to make that easier I'm creating this thread as a central hub for that. If you plan to use custom fonts in your posts, make them available in this thread as links, post attachments, whatever so people can download and install them. As it should go without saying that distribution of pirated material on the board is not allowed, free shareware fonts only please, and I'd ask that even players who don't plan on using custom fonts themselves be good sports and install the fonts provided here so as to help enable other people to better express their characters. have fun!
