Hobbes that is some good coaching as well - little rest between matches in the Group stage - might as well use the whole team |

I did not have the chance to see any of Tuesday's final group games but Canada recorded the surprise with a 2-1 win over Germany to win the group. The problem is Canada's reward is a meeting with France in the quarterfinals while Germany faces a weaker IMO China in their game. Shades of West Germany losing to East germany in 1974 so they'd avoid being paired with Holland before the final? Colombia got a 2-2 draw against the US, helepd in part by less than stellar goalkeeping from hope Solo while Brasil, resting a few regulars could only draw 0-0 with South Africa [hey exactly what their men's team did!] Friday's quarterfinals are now set, Brasil-Australia USA-Sweden Germany-China Canada-France |

There are far too many people who are gnashing and wailing that we should have lost and now we're screwed, etc. etc. Hey we just beat Germany at a major tournament. I'm going to enjoy it. So hands up who had Canada as the only team with three wins after the preliminary round? Yeah me neither. We certainly tried to not win this game. Sinclair didn't play. Neither did Janine Beckie or Kadeisha Buchanan (suspended). Diana Matheson and Ashley Lawrence didn't start. Fleming only played a half. Basically the more important you are to our team, the less you played in this match. And yet Germany had all of the ball and didn't do a lot with it and Melissa Tancredi scored two goals, including a header in the area off of a free kick from about 40 yards out. It wasn't pretty, but it worked. Tancredi is the whipping woman of this team for the supporters and instead of this rallying them, it seems to have caused even more consternation since she will surely start the QF now. I was very happy with Steph Labbé today and I thought Champman and Josée Bélanger were very good at the World Cup and both have struggled here (neither started the opener, but featured in both), but I thought they were good today and I hope one of them starts at outside back ahead of Wilkinson in the QF. I'd probably rather play China than France, sure, but we avoid the U.S. and Brazil and Sweden and Australia won't be a cake-walk. It's the Olympics, it's supposed to be hard. We should be well-rested and healthy. We're playing like we fear no one, so hopefully we can do the business against France and see if we can get back on the podium. cheers, hobbes |

That's the spirit hobbes! It is a little bit crazy not to enjoy a win like that. Best of luck to Canada to go out and whip the Frenchies! |

The first major surprise of the women's tournament as Sweden eliminates the US on penalties after a 1-1 tie. Sweden defended well for 120 minutes and hit the US on a great counter, almost Leicester City style, a ball over the top and the forward outrunning the central defenders and beating the keeper. The US scored about 15 minutes from the end as a headed came off a Swedish defender's face and fell perfectly for Alex Morgan to convert. 1-1 and on to extra time. The US as it did in the 90 minutes ahd the vast amount of possession but could not finish the game off. then towards the end a few wild minutes, carli Lloyd had the ball in the net but it was called off for a foul as she freed herself by dragging the defender down. The right call there. then instances later, Sweden scored but the goal was called back for offsides. An offsides which did not exist. A bad call and it could have proved decisive. But ultimately wa snot as first Alex morgan ahd her PK saved, then Cristen Press shot her's over the bar. meanwhile Hope Solo save done Swedish PK but Dahlqvist [sp?] stepepd up after Press' miss and won the match. Sweden on to the semifinals to face the Brazil-Australia winner. The US goes home as early as I can recall from a major women's tournament but that is part of the sport, you don't finish, you don't win. |

This is the first time the US women have failed to reach the gold-medal match. Sweden was probably a bad match-up for the US. While I wasn't impressed in the least with Sweden in group play, you know that Sundhage knows the US inside out. |

It came down to exactly what Sammy wrote, the US did not convert their dominant possession into goals. Did Sweden's goalie have to make a difficult save all match long? I thought Pia Sundhage the Sweden coach, who obviously knows the US well, did a good job not just of aligning her team but putting on the subs in extra time as Sweden were probably better in the extra period than they were certainly in the last 30 minutes of regulation. And yes Lotta Schelin's goal should have counted so the US were probably fortunate even to get to PKs. Hope Solo tried to ice that last Swedish PK taker but she wouldn't have any of that and calmly and coolly finished off the US with that PK. Afterwards Solo, as ever was lacking class calling the Swedes "cowards" for sitting back. Man that woman is so unlikable! Germany just defeated China 1-0. I only caught the last few minutes, enough to see China put a penalty off the post in the 84th minute. Germany did dominate possession per the post match stats I saw and the shots [China only had 2 all match] and even in the last 10 minutes Germany had 2 golden chances to score a 2nd but failed. They ended up being fortunate China missed their penalty or else anther team would have seen their possession domination go to waste. In the semis Germany play the Canada/France winner while Sweden face the Brazil/Australia victor. Those matches to be played later today. |

Anyone else feel that hanging onto Ellis as the coach was not in this team's best interest? In hind sight, you have to shake things up between major tournaments or the players get complacent. Girls, get on the bus and stop whinning. Ya gotta put the ball on frame. |

Oh what a day. First all of the Hope Solo stuff. I can't believe the official let her change gloves. But I loved that Dahlqvist just looked at her and smiled. To conclude a wild and eventful 0-0 draw between Brazil and Australia. Marta missed her PK and opened the door to the Aussies, but the delightful Gorry missed her kick and Brazil won 7-6 on a tremendous save from Barbara. Lydia Williams made the best save I've seen at the tournament seconds before full time in regulation to keep the match going. Both teams seemed to have a number of chances on the break to do something, but never carved out a great chance. That being said Brazil were the better team, which isn't to take anything away from the Aussies who looked dangerous. Aussie sub Chloe Logarzo looked absolutely spent during the entire extra time which was puzzling and I thought she would have had a glorious chance to score early in extra time and she quit on the play. On the flipside, I don't know what Formiga eats, but she is tireless. I don't even know what position she plays because she is all over the field and making key plays. Brazil lost Fabiana and are without Christiane. Two big injuries, but finally a few days between games. Canada rode their luck a little, but scored one of the nicest goals in our country's history to get past France. Le Sommer deserved a penalty in the 10th minute and didn't get one. France definitely had the better of the play, but I thought we were more cutting when we had the ball. France generated some good decent chances. Wendie Renard had a great headed chance go just wide before half. Allysha Chapman got the start at left back which meant Lawrence changed sides, but Chapman was injured before half and Josée Bélanger came in at right back and Lawrence got to play on her natural side, but Bélanger picked up a yellow and will now miss the semi. I was worried Chapman broke her collarbone or dislocated her shoulder, but it's not that serious. She could be ready for the semi, so obviously nothing it broken at least. It was scary at times, but Steph Labbé wasn't forced to make any massive saves. The best shot France had late was right at her. She still punches everything, but so far she's been very steady which is so much more than we could have expected going in. We didn't start Tancredi to everyone's shock. It's probably the right decision, but still. I thought Sinclair had a tough time getting into the game and Fleming showed her age a little for the first time. But Rebecca Quinn continues to absolutely shine. Came off the bench in her more familiar d-mid role and was immense in the final minutes. I thought the French midfield never really got going. They struggled to combine and move. They lacked the cutting edge and the quality I'm used to seeing out of them. Amandine Henry was quiet, Abily couldn't create great chances, Louisa (Nécib) Cadamuro didn't really inject much life for them off the bench. They're a good side and had the better of the game today, but a sensational touch by Beckie and a great finish and run by Schmidt was enough for us today. Holy Schmidt! Holy Schmidt! Holy Schmidt! Thank goodness for an earlier kickoff Tuesday. If I disappear from work at 4 p.m. for 2-3 more hours again, someone's going to notice. cheers, hobbes |

What drama in the final quarterfinal between Brazil & Australia. Brazil kept pushing and pushing but could not break through or when they did ran into Australia's fine goalkeeper Williams. 0-0 it ended after 120 minutes then on to penalties. Some pretty good penalty kick taking by both teams as each made their first 4 attempts, then of all people Marta missed Brazil's 5th and it seemed all but over but Barbara the Brazilian goalie saved Australia's kick and it went three more rounds with Brazil converting all of their kicks and Barbara winning the match with another big penalty save. What a dramatic game that had you on the edge of your seat. You feel for Australia but at the same time it is good to see Brazil advancing and to see the whole nation behind the women's team there. Congrats to hobbes on Canada's win over France 1-0. What a well taken goal too by Canada, a long diagonal out to the right wing where Beckie takes it down and lifts it past the defender before hitting a cross to the far post where Sophie Schmidt brilliantly volleyed it in. Once more France played some nice build up play but just could not finish. This will be it for Louisa Cadamuro [nee Necib] who is retiring to start a family. Canada finally beat Germany last week, now they get a chance to do it again in the semifinals. Meanwhile Brazil face Sweden who I expect will not be as easy to beat for the Brazilians as they were in group play.
You knew Solo's gamesmanship was not going to work as Lisa Dahlkvist the final Swedish penalty taker simply laughed at Solo's antics rather than look nervous. And would you know it, she was as cool as a cucumber as she finished off the penalty kick. Post game Solo was not only ungracious in defeat she also criticized Pia Sundhage. But Solo acting boorish really should not surprise anyone. It is good for the women's game to have a team other than the US win the title. Vince, I disagree with you about Ellis. She earned the right to coach at least one World Cup/Olympic cycle. Remember it was not her but Sweden's current coach Sundhage who coached the US at London 2012. The US is going through an adjustment period as it integrates younger players like Pugh, Dunn, Horan, Johnston and Brian into the team. |

I did not have a horse in the race but I really enjoyed the Brazil-Australia match. Of the four semifinals it was probably the most evenly played, although all 4 were pretty tightly contested as you can see with 2 decided on PKs and 2 more finishing 1-0. But man Brazil and Australia just gave it their all. I thought once it went to PKs, Australia could have pulled it out but two great saves from Barbara was the difference. How many times do we see a team's big star missing a PK in a penalty shootout. Going back to 1986 you had Platini and Zico missing, then Baresi and Baggio at USA 94, just 2 months ago Messi missing in the Copa America Final and on Friday Alex Morgan for the US and Marta for Brazil fluffed their penalties. Marta owes a big debt of gratitude to Barbara for saving her. I think Brazil can get to the final but I have no idea who will win a rematch between Germany & Canada. Looks like a real even match. With the US out, I would like to see Brazil or Canada, 2 nations who have never won anything at this level of the women's game, emerge victorious. Oh and hobbes, although I am old enough to be her father I have a little crush on Canada's #4 Shelina Zadorsky! She's a good defender too.

Obrigado Barbara! I'm just starting to breath again after that intense quarterfinal. Yes you do feel sympathy for Australia but what a win for Brasil. And as somebody else mentioned, this win is really helping popularize women's football in Brasil which can only be a good thing. In Barbara Brasil finally have a good women's goalkeeper. Defensively this is the best Brasilian women's team I have seen but offensively they probably are not quite what they have been in the past but that is all right as defense wins games. hobbes is correct, Formiga is everywhere on the field. What an engine that lady has. Ironically Brasil's next opponent Sweden also went 120 minutes on Friday so neither team should have a real advantage fatigue wise for the semifinal. Brasil just cannot get over confident based on their group result. I think the crowd on Tuesday in the semifinal will not let them feel that way. Good win for Canada, and as discussed their goal was very nicely done. |

Zadorsky? Interesting. They're all looking pretty good to me tonight! All of the women that everyone seems to get hot and bothered by didn't make this team: Kalyn Kyle, Lauren Sesselman and Adriana Leon (and Amanda Cicchini, who no one on here would remember), but they mostly don't do much for me. So maybe I have odd tastes. That was a great ball out of the back by Zadorsky today, though. I meant to mention how great the crowds in Brazil have been. It looked like it was freezing tonight, but there was a huge crowd for the games I watched and not only that, but they were loud and passionate. They really added a lot to the Canada-France match. Obviously the Brazil match was great, but I think these have been some of the best crowds I've seen for a women's soccer tournament. Just based on atmosphere as much as anything else. Even if they have no rooting interest. Even if the match isn't that good, the atmosphere doesn't waver. cheers, hobbes |

Less than an hour away before the start of the women's semifinals, Brasil-Sweden at the Maracana which should be rocking, followed by Canada-Germany at the Mineirao in Belo Horizonte (Yes, Germany, although now their women's team) returning to the Mineirao!) Interesting that both semis are match ups which took place in group play. If the same results are repeated we will have a Brasil-Canada final but as hobbes told us that group phase win was Canada's 1st ever against Germany and looking at the lineups for that game neither team, in their then final group game, were completely full strength. |
