The draw:

Group E
Brazil
China
Sweden
South Africa

Group F
Germany
Canada
Australia
Zimbabwe

Group G
United States
France
Colombia
New Zealand

Top 2 in each group plus 2 best 3rd place teams advance to the quarterfinals. A tough draw for Canada in Group F with 2 good rivals in Germany & Australia. The rest of the tourney looks to me pretty straightforward in group play.

No Japan, no England, no North Korea, this is a weaker field than the Women's World Cup. To me it would be a major surprise if neither Germany or the US don't win this.

Canada has lost keeper Erin McLeod for at least a year, if not two, as she undergoes her third ACL surgery. I fear this could be the end for McLeod.

This basically rules us out of being medal contenders I figure, but we beat the Dutch 2-1 in the Netherlands last week. I found that somewhat reasurring after Stephanie Labbé looked shockingly bad in the final of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament.

I think at worst we should beat Zimbabwe and hopefully advance as best third.

Wednesday first round matches begin. An article previewing the women's Olympic tournament.

These are the first set of matches:
Sweden v South Africa
Canada v Australia
Brazil v China
Zimbabwe v Germany
USA v New Zealand
France v Colombia

Canada-Australia and Brazil-China look to be the pick of these matches.

Apparently I'm blind or I need to get more sleep and work less (it's pretty bad not to be able to find this thread when I had already posted in it).

Canada meets Australia in a massive match in our group. The top two teams advance from each three-team pool and the two best third-place finishers also advance. If someone losses in that Canada-Australia match, that might be it for them. However, whoever finishes second in our group likely gets Sweden or China in a quarter-final, which may be an easier path to a semifinal than finishing first in the group.

All 12 teams play tomorrow. Not sure if it will work around the world (of course there are creative ways around these things), but cbc.ca/olympics will be streaming all six matches live tomorrow.

just watched Australia vs Canada - very entertaining match but tbf Australia messed up - despite giving up a goal in the first 20 seconds of the match :o - Australia played some enterprising footie - went up a player in the 18th minute w/ Shelina Zadorsky receiving a red card for a pulling down Aussie Michelle Heyman & being the last defender - actually that was the right decision because Australia wasn't able to score & in the 80th Christine Sinclair scored on a breakaway to seal the deal for the Canucks - One word to describe the Canucks peformance, Resilience - looking forward to more matches from Group F - Germany is in this Group & 3 teams from FIFA's Top 10 rankings are in this Group

This Canadian women's team has a gift for making me feel emotions that I'm not sure I've ever felt before in all of my years of watching sports. We'll see how the tournament plays out, but that could have been one of the biggest results in the history of the women's program…. and it was just agony for two hours.

As joyous as the opening goal was (I had it at 19 seconds, but either way it was the fastest goal I've ever seen in a match I was watching live), you knew there was so much match left that it might not be the difference-maker. I thought the opening 10-15 minutes was pretty rough. The French referee called almost nothing and both teams kicked lumps out of each other (though I think we were doing more of the kicking). Then Zadorsky got sent off and we spent a solid hour defending for our lives. At one point we had committed four fouls and had three cards. It was an oddly officiated match.

We looked like we were always on the verge of conceding, but Australia didn't really carve out too many clean chances, they hit the bar on a free kick and grazed the post, but there were a lot of scrambles and half-clearances more than golden chances. I won't profess to know a ton about this Aussie side, but I did think it was odd that Samantha Kerr and Michelle Heyman started ahead of Lisa De Vanna and Kyah Simon — the two women who accounted for all five of their goals at the World Cup last summer.

We earned a penalty, that looked like it was never a penalty and somehow Beckie talked Sinclair into letting her take it and Beckie didn't hit it hard or place it well. Fleming put a shot through the Aussie keeper and had it cleared off the line. I think we created three real chances and probably should have had four goals.

We finally started to play again and earned a few corners late and then the Aussies somehow sent every player they had forward for a corner in the 80th and Fleming's clearance found Sinclair on her own side of half on a breakaway with the Aussie keeper near the centre circle. Sinclair rounded her and doubled our lead.

I'm worried that after some good games in the lead-up Rhian Wilkinson really struggled today. And Chapman wasn't any better in her place. Far too many giveaways, we went backwards far too often as well and gave the ball away. Labbé managed to both bring her A game and scare the crap out of me almost constantly.

As much some players weren't great and we defended all match, etc. that was a huge performance and a great, gutsy win in a massive match. I'll take gritty over pretty if it means a win.

Zimbabwe actually looked better than I expected against Germany (it was 2-1 in the second half), but they shouldn't realistically be a challenge for anyone else in this group. I hope Germany doesn't slip up against Australia and we can finish second.

All today's scores:
RSA 0 : 1 SWE
AUS 0 : 2 CAN
CHN 0 : 3 BRA
GER 6 : 1 ZIM
NZL 0 : 2 USA
COL 0 : 4 FRA

Impressive opening day wins for Canada, France and Brazil. the French avenging a World Cup defeat to Colombia. Brazil with a comfortable win over China. Hope Solo stuck her foot in her mouth again, making comments about the Zika threat so the Brazilian fans took it out on her and shouted Zika every time she touched the ball! The US and France meet on Saturday in a game which will determine who wins the group.

Solo took a photo and posted it on twitter of her in a full beekeeper like mask with insect repellant. Obviously the Brazilians did not take that too well.

Of course not the most shocking photos of Hope Solo on the internet! :o

Very good game between the US and France. Women's soccer could use more high-level, competitive games like that.

Germany needed a late goal to get a 2-2 draw with Australia in a good and somewhat surprising match. The Germans have a history of underachieving at the Olympics and Australia played well, but they had a 2-0 lead at half and really should have closed it out.

Canada was comfortable in a 3-1 win over Zimbabwe. We weren't great, but we scored early and were up 3-0 after about a half hour. The goal we gave up was awful, but I'm not too worried about it.

The commentators were roasting Kadesha Buchannan, our young central defenders who was the young player of the tournament at the World Cup. She was booked for not retreating 10 yards on a free kick and is suspended for the Germany match, but I think she did it on purpose. The free kick was 30 yards away, there was no need for a wall and as soon as she was booked she went back into the area and we didn't have a wall. There is a school of thought that we would be better off losing to Germany and finishing second in our group (group winner should get France, runner up would get either Sweden or China). But the bigger thing is having Buchannan there for the QF now.

Brazil beat Sweden 5x1 yesterday in an impressive match. Marta & Beatriz scored 2 goals each. Beatriz looks to be the #9 this team has been looking for. I just hope the team have not peaked too early, as Brazil's women's etam ahs a history of not handling elimination games well but so far everything looks good for this team.

Brazil, Canada and the USA have already assured themselves a spot in the last 8.

Good 2nd half adjustments by the USA yesterday to reverse things and defeat France. The French move the ball around well but to em look like they lack incisiveness in front of goal.

Meant to mention that the crowd for Canada-Zimbabwe was pretty great. They were backing Zimbabwe pretty hard (though they did cheer the Canadian goals and a couple of nice pieces of skill we showed). I thought they would get bored with oléing any time Zimbabwe strung a couple of passes together. But they didn't. It was really loud and festive for 90 minutes. Even with a drab second half unfolding.

Canada also managed to use all 18 players in its first two games, which is nice to rest legs and give some of our young players some important experience.
