What a dramatic final! The game finished 1-1 after 90 then 120 minutes, Neymar with a free kick for Brazil's goal and then Brazil finally gave up a goal as a nice worked move was finished off by Meyer. But the game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes and on to penalties. I'm thinking this is over, Germany do not lose penalty kick shootouts. Then Weverton saved a shot from one of Germany's overage players in round 5 (Peterson), after each team had made their first 4. Up stepped Neymar for the 5th kick for Brazil and he converted it to send the Maracana into a frenzy. It may not bury the ghost of that 7-1 game 2 years ago but it gave Brazil its first Olympic title and it does go some way towards redemption for Brazilian football. A pretty even game but Brazil are worthy Olympic champions. |

It has been a long time coming and that game had me very, very nervous. I have not been that nervous watching a Brasil match since the 2010 World Cup match against the Netherlands. Give Germany a lot of credit, they actually won the midfield battle against Brasil and played Brasil pretty even at the Maracana. I thought once Lars Bender went off injured in the 2nd half, Brasil began to take the initiative again but between Neymar's goal and Lars Bender's substitution, Germany were taking the game to Brasil. Overall though it was about as even a game as you could ask for and had plenty of entertainment. Like Dr. Z I was not looking forward to penalties knowing Germany's success at those but Weverton, who is known to be a good penalty saver, came through (and almost saved an earlier attempt) and then Neymar was there to wrap it up. That is one big monkey off of Brasil's back. This team had to win the gold and now that they have all Brasilians can think of this as a successful Olympics. |

Well done Brazil! An exciting final between two very even teams. Glad however to see Brazil finally get their Olympic gold. I was really impressed with the Bender brothers for Germany. i wonder with Schweinsteiger retiring, Gundogan always hurt, Khedira often hurt, if Jogi Low will look to give the one or both Benders, an opportunity to play for the national team/ Meyer and Brandt deserve a chance too. Gnabry was quiet today and he too can make his way into the national squad, if he gets playing time at Arsenal. Apart from that though I think Germany is really deep where he plays in midfield-Ozil, Draxler, Reus, Gotze, Schurrle, etc. Would Brazil have won this if Dunga remained coach? I kind of doubt that as I do not see him going with 4 attacking players like Micale did. That and the addition of Walace to midfield really changed things for Brazil. |

Well done Brazil! An enjoyable final, well played and both teams went for the win throughout. Neymar just won even more admirers in Brazil with his performance here. And Micale their coach, a guy I had never heard of before this competition, probably will get himself a lucrative job offer from a Brazilian club very soon. |

I missed most of the first half, but on the whole I thought that was the best final of a major tournament I've seen in a long, long time. Brazil came in waves towards the end of regulation and both teams were trying to attack and hit each other on the counter until, finally the legs were no longer willing. Well done to both teams for playing to win and attacking. And congratulations to our Brazilian posters here for a gold medal that was a long time coming. cheers, hobbes |

Ditto what hobbes wrote above. A very enjoyable final, as hobbes noted the best major final in a long time. And yes it was a pretty even matchup. Somebody wrote that it changed a bit once Lars Bender went off injured and I agree that did tilt it in Brasil's favor but still not overwhelmingly so. Frankly I thought once it went to penalties, it was going to go Germany's way. 4 of their 5 were converted but Weverton is known in Brasil as a penalty saving goalkeeper and he came close on several prior kicks before saving Petersen's. And credit Brasil's penalty takers for their calm nerves in such a situation. A good end to what ahs been a good football tournament. Brasil, germany & Nigeria in that order took the medals. Now it will be fascinating to watch how many of the U23 players in this competition make the jump up to their respective senior national teams. From what i saw, many deserve to do so. |

Yes, a wonderful final full of attacking soccer! hobbes did miss the part of the game when I thought Germany had the better of the play, narrowly missing taking a lead, with any one of 5 shots on frame that could have gone in. Not that Brasil was not super dangerous in the attack, but they did score on their only shot on target the first half. Lars Bender may have been Germany's most consistent and active player until he went off. As noted, they were never quite the same after he left the game. Hearty congrats to Brasil and her fans here, a well deserved home victory! |
