I agree that Denmark were bad but Brasil played a wonderful game. Neymar dropped deeper and played almost like Messi does now with Barcelona. He was very creative and spread the ball out well and importantly, very quickly, which never allowed Denmark's defense to settle. Good games from the two Gabriels and Luan in attacking roels while Walace in defensive midfield did a fine job, along with a deeper lying Renato Augusto, in cleaning up behind the attacking quartet. Brasil have I think found their lineup. Their game against Colombia in the quarterfinals should be a good one as Colombia defend well and are quick and skillful too.

Agreed. Colombia will be a difficult opponent. An opportunity for Neymar to also get a little revenge on Colombia after they ended his 2014 World Cup in the quarterfinals.

The dynamic play of Brasil against Denmark will, if repeated on Saturday, bring dividends to Brasil. Let us see if this team has really found itself or whether Denmark were just weak opponents.

Look out for Germany. They brought their game today in the quarterfinals as they just destroyed Portugal 4-0. This game was never in doubt as Germany attacked Portugal from the opening whistle, outmanning them in midfield, spreading them out and eventually scoring 4 times. Varela was excellent in Portugal's goal and kept the score down as Max Meyer, Julian Brandt and the Bender brothers just dominated midfield while Gnabry was a constant threat on the flanks and cutting inside and David Selke was a presence at center forward. Portugal had an excellent group stage but this is now a new tournament and they were completely dominated by Germany who definitely are a title contender on this form.

All the quarterfinal results
Germany 4-0 Portugal
Nigeria 2-0 Denmark
Korea 0-1 Honduras
Brazil 2-0 Colombia

Not quite the drama of the women's quarterfinals as in all but Korea-Honduras it was pretty clear one team was better than the other. Colombia pissed me off, they have a talented, skillful team but just like in World Cup 2014 and Copa America 2015 they decided to get physical. It was a pretty brutal match but I thought the Turkish ref, who does a lot of World Cup and European games did a good job in keeping order while also making sure nobody was sent off. he showed his cards in a physical game but kept his senses. Brazil won through 2 golazos, a Neymar first half free kick then a 2nd half goal where Neymar passed to Luan and his curving shot beat Bonilla. Colombia did not really threaten Brazil's goal and we have to credit the Brazilian defense as they have yet to give up a goal in 4 game sin the Olympics.

Honduras beat Korea thanks to a nice counter attack goal, Quito carried the ball 40 meters then passed for Ellis to score. Luis Lopez, as he did against Argentina, made some superb saves for Honduras. Lopez is an excellent goalkeeping prospect. Honduras' defense held out and Korea were shut down.

Nigeria scored early, coasted for awhile they were made to work a bit by Denmark but the Africans eventually scored a 2nd to finish the game off. As reported earlier, Germany were very impressive in defeating Portugal.

The semifinals to be played Wednesday will be:

Brazil-Honduras
Germany-Nigeria

Dominant work from Germany. Nigeria looked pretty good too and Brazil survived Colombia's brutal tactics. And Honduras? A great accomplishment. Jorge Luis Pinto has coaching magic, Costa Rica to World Cup quarterfinals, now Honduras to the Olympic semifinals. What a coach! And what a keeper in Luis Lopez. I think we will be seeing him this fall for the catrachos in World Cup qualifying.

I am curious to read cafetero's take because if I am a Colombian fan I would be mad a shell at the way my team approached the Brasil game. Colombia are a) an attacking team; and b] a stylish playing team. So why when playing Brasil do they resort to thuggery? They are doing a disservice to their fans and players by playing that way against Brasil.

Absolutely right Merengue. I have been an admirer of Colombia's teams for years but their play in recent years against Brazil has been cringe worthy. And frankly totally unnecessary as Colombia doe snot need to take a back seat to any team skills wise.

Neymar scored after 15 seconds and Brazil never looked back as they crushed Honduras 6-0 in the semifinal! Amazing that so many major international tournaments have had mismatches in semifinals lately [World Cup, Copa America] 2 goals each for Neymar and Gabriel Jesus, 1 by Luan and Marquinhos. Honduras simply had stage fright and had no answer for anything Brazil did. Cannot ask for more from Brazil, now they await the Germany-Nigeria outcome.

Yes it should. This is Brasil's dream final. More on that later but first I still need to praise the semifinal win over Honduras. They were never in the game and did look scared. The quick goal of course helped but this was going to be a blowout whether an early goal was scored or not. Micale has made some great lineup adjustments since those first two games, the 4 attackers with 2 central midfielders has been working to perfection. Brasil are looking good, are full of confidence and should eb ready for the final. But Germany, apart from the ghost of 7x1 is a very, very dangerous team. They defend well and like Brasil are tough to break down. Their midfield is creative and up top they are quick and mobile. This should be some final with two footballing giants meeting for the gold medal, something neither nation has amazingly never before won! Enjoy Saturday's final.

An absolutely dominant performance by Brasil. I was thinking of hobbes enjoying seeing Honduras getting hammered and there he is confirming his pleasure in seeing that. Schadenfreude indeed! As others stated Honduras had stage fright while Brasil, feeling good about themselves right now, were rampant. Alexao is correct, the lineup changes have worked wonders but apart from their attacking ability, the defense has still not permitted a goal.

In the ther semifinal, i thought Nigeria ahd some opportunities,e specially when it was still 1-0 to tie or even take the elad but they could not finish them. Clearly they did miss Etebo their attacking midfielder who scored 4 goals in group play against Japan. His ability to get in dangerous positions and finish was missed. But let us also praise Germany. This is a solid team. The bender brothers give them that overage veteran stability in midfield and how have Arsenal not been using more of Serge Gnabry? What a dynamic and skillful attacking midfielder. Matias Ginter was a youthful sub on Germany's 2014 World Cup winning team and been a sub at Dortmund but with Hummels moving there, Ginter should take over and he will have plenty of confidence after his great defensive play in the Olympics. He is a steady presence in the back. Right back Jeremy Toljan turned the US down to play on this team and you can see he one day may have a chance to make a leap up to the full team. Germany are solid everywhere in the field and that should make for a classic final matchup. not just the storyline about revenge for the 7x1 Mineirazo, but the fact that these are probably world football two pre-eminent national teams over the years and now they are meeting for the chance to win their first Olympic football title. Saturday's final is must see viewing if you are a football fan.

Who are the overage players for each side? Neymar for Brazil; the Bender brothers for Germany, I guess. Who else?

Besides Neymar the overage players for Brazil are midfielder Renato Augusto and goalkeeper Weverton who replaced another overage keeper Fernando Prass who was injured prior to the start of the tourney.

For Germany the 3rd overage player apart from the bender brothers is forward Nils Peterson who has been coming off the bench for them.

Gut check time for Brazil as other than Copa America, Brazil have not won a championship when hosting [1950/2014] So the pressure is all on them. Germany can play looser, this tournament is a success for them win or lose. And if Germany does win, Brazil will never hear the end of it as the ghosts from 7x1 will only grow. Winning won't erase them either but will help ease some of their effect.

Having said that, Brazil really are playing well, their speed, ball movement and skill make them very hard to defend. Even the thuggish play of Colombia in the quarters could not stop them. I think Tite, the new senior national team coach has learned a lot from watching this team and many of the U23 players will be playing for the selecao this fall.

And Jogi Low has some good candidates for the future among his U23 players too. Not just Ginter but Sule the other centerback has been excellent. Meyer and Gnabry have owned the midfield and while Gnabry plays a position loaded on the senior team, Meyer could become the heir apparent to Schweinsteiger now that he has retired from national team play.

Like everybody else I am really looking forward to this final.

Good analysis of the two finalists rosarino. I'm not sure what to expect in this final except that it should be a fascinating game. Hopefully it has more goals than the Euro 16 and Copa America Finals played earlier this summer. I do not think Germany will be intimidated by the atmosphere at the Maracana. But as well as Germany have played they have not yet run into an attack quite like Brazil's.

By the way I agree with Merengue, in the semifinal Nigeria really did miss the injured Etebo, who was so dangerous throughout the tournament, and they also missed the suspended defensive midfielder Azubuike who provided cover to their defense.

Back to the final, Brazil will have to find a way to offset Germany's very good counter attack. Man Gnabry has looked good in this competition but will that be enough to convince stubborn Arsene Wenger to play him?
