I understand the disappointment enganche and rosarino feel about how Argentina played as that reflects how I felt after seeing Brasil. Just way too much individualism and while so many of us were anxious to see the Neymar-Gabriel Jesus-Gabriel Barbosa attack playing together, the truth is they just did not gel. And overage midfielder Renato Augusto had a poor match trying to direct play behind them. This team better perform better in the 1st half on Sunday against Iraq or else the fans will likely start turning on them. Frustration levels are high in Brasil. |

Oh we have. Did you see the lively crowd for Brazil's detsruction of Sweden last night? The crowd was even chanting, "Marta is better than Neymar!" ![]() Big day for Neymar and teammates tonight versus Iraq. Obviously a must win. Denmark x South Africa is the other group match. Vital matches for Argentina versus Algeria, Germany x Korea and Colombia x Japan today. Mexico look to score more than the 8 goals Korea did against Fiji. |

Sorry carioca but your Brazil are looking bad and just cannot handle the pressure of playing at home. Another 0-0 this time with Iraq and this was worse than the South Africa game as Brazil were not as threatening as they were in the first game and Iraq even had a few chances themselves to score. Gabriel Jesus is supposed to be a big money player but he looked poor. Neither Neymar or Gabigol were much better either but at least they tried. Gabriel Jesus didn't even look like that. Mexico started off super, super slow and actually were losing 1-0 to Fiji at halftime. Raul Gutierrez the coach must have inspired them though as they came back and won 5-1. That is the good news, the bad news two serious injuries which left Oribe Perlata [broken nose] and Rodolfo Pizarro [broken shin] out not only for the rest of the tournament but each, especially Pizarro will also be out awhile for their respective clubs-America and Pachuca. Some great action in other games today, especially Germany-Korea and Japan-Colombia. Germany-Korea went back and forth, Korea looked to have won it when they scored after 87 minutes to go 3-2 in front but a deflected free kick in added time gave Germany a 3-3 tie. This group is now super disputed as Korea and Mexico have 4 points each but Korea has the better goal average after they beat Fiji 8-0 compared to Mexico's 5-1. Germany have 2 points and Fiji none. Final round Germany play Fiji and will win to go to 5 points. But what of Korea-Mexico, a draw will leave them each with 5 points too and much would then depend on how much Germany beat Fiji by [Korea would qualify under this scenario.- However a winner between Korea-Mexico would advance along with Germany. So Korea-Mexico is practically a knockout stage game. Another wild one in Manaus as Colombia led 2-0 after 2 goals early in the 2nd half against Japan. But Japan came back and tied the game and were outrunning the tired Colombians in the latter minutes but the match ended 2-2. Earlier Nigeria defeated Sweden 1-0 so Nigeria even with their chaotic travel plans, have already assured themselves a spot in the last 8. So to have Portugal who beat Honduras 2-1. Luis Lopez the Honduran goalie was to thank for keeping the catrachos in the game. Argentina went down to 10 men and were struggling against Algeria but the Algerians later lost a player of their own and Argentina edged them out 2-1. The loss eliminated Algeria and now Argentina-Honduras also is essentially a knockout game. Denmark edged out South Africa 1-0 so now Denmark with 4 points lead Brazil and Iraq with 2 and South Africa with 1. After 2 games, Algeria and Fiji are eliminated while Nigeria and Portugal are in the last 8. |

Brazil look really bad. There is no creativity in their team and they look like a group of individuals, not a team. Plus Neymar, of which so much is expected, looks out of form. This team unlike recent senior teams, defends reasonably well. But where is the attack? Gabriel Jesus and Gabrial Barbosa/Gabigol are supposed to be the two new wonderboys of Brazilian football but neither has impressed. And the midfield despite having two pretty good players in Renato Augusto and Felipe Anderson, is just not creative enough. It all comes down to Wednesday and the must win match against Denmark. Good work by both Portugal and Nigeria. Those two and Korea have been my favorite teams to watch play so far in these Olympics. Each combine nice build up play with some good finishing. |

Mexico replaced the injured Peralta and Pizarro on their roster with Queretaro's forward Carlos Fierro and Pachuca right back/midfielder Raul Lopez. Ironically both players were developed in Guadalajara's youth system. Mexico cannot go for the tie, they must beat Korea to have a realistic chance of qualifying (unless Germany defeats Fiji by less than the 4 goals Mexico beat the Fijians.) Brazil, wow I am at a loss of words to describe them. Lackluster and punchless do not go far enough. |

I did not know you could make injury replacements to your roster mid tournament. Then again unlike FIFA tournaments and their 23 player rosters, these Olympic teams are small by comparison with only 18 players. Losing 2, as Mexico just did to injury would leave only 5 players, 1 a backup GK on the bench so letting them replace an injured player is a good idea. |

Another embarrassment for Argentine football as they get knocked out of the Olympic tournament after tying 1-1 with Honduras. Honduras edged Argentina out on better goal difference. A missed penalty kick today by Argentina may have been the difference but let's be honest here, Honduras could have scored more and miss a penalty of their own. Geronimo Rulli in Argentina's goal came u with some good saves. So Portugal wins the group, Honduras finish 2nd as those two advance. Then in the next set of games, Germany crushed Fiji 10-0 while South Korea got a golazo to defeat Mexico 1-0. The defending champions Mexico did miss injured Oribe Peralta as they could not put their possession advantage to use and eventually the Koreans scored a fine goal to win the match. So Korea won the group and Germany finished 2nd. Defending champions Mexico and Argentina, winners of the two previous Olympics in 2004 and 2008 are each out of this tournament. In the Group C games, Nigeria copied the women's teams and already being in the next round they rested half their starters while Colombia, needing win, were sharp and got a 2-0 win over Nigeria. That sent Colombia into the quarterfinals along with group winners Nigeria. Now the last set of games just began with all 4 teams still having a chance and most eyes on whether Brazil can finally score a goal as they play group leaders Denmark. |

Implied result. Brazil wakes up. Argentina and Mexico surprisingly head home. These age-group based tournaments are almost always full of surprises. |

Brazil have indeed awaken (awoken? awoke? Damn as a non native speaker the past tense of awake has always been a word which troubles me) Neymar looking good playing behind the two Gabriels-Barbosa & Jesus. Maybe Neymar is the #10 Brazil have been looking for? |

I am glad you brought that up enganche as the past tense of awaken is very hard for me too. And thanks shel for the English lesson. Much appreciated. muchas gracias ![]() I 100% agree with enganche, Mexico without Peralta lacked weight in attack. Hirving Lozano has already shown with the full national team his worth as a wide attacking player but he had a poor tournament in Brazil and was not able to take the scoring role with Peralta out injured. Mexico possessed the ball well but couldn't break through Korea's defense. in the end the result was just. As we say in Spanish los goles no se merecen, se hacen (you don't deserve goals, you create them (it rhymes in Spanish.) Congrats to Honduras on eliminating Argentina. Missed Pks for both and ultimately the tie was enough to send the catrachos through and the argentines home. Not a good Argentina team so they do not really belong in the last 8. The quarterfinals are now set and these are the matchups: Brazil-Colombia Korea-Honduras Nigeria-Denmark Portugal-Germany A couple of games really stand out, especially Brazil-Colombia a rematch of their 2014 World Cup match which also was a quarterfinal. then there is Portugal-Germany which also should be an excellent match. On current form I think Nigeria should beat Denmark but Korea-Honduras looks like a pretty even matchup too. If Brazil can reproduce how they played tonight versus Denmark, then watch out. But Colombia always matches up well with them. |

I agree that Denmark were bad but Brasil played a wonderful game. Neymar dropped deeper and played almost like Messi does now with Barcelona. He was very creative and spread the ball out well and importantly, very quickly, which never allowed Denmark's defense to settle. Good games from the two Gabriels and Luan in attacking roels while Walace in defensive midfield did a fine job, along with a deeper lying Renato Augusto, in cleaning up behind the attacking quartet. Brasil have I think found their lineup. Their game against Colombia in the quarterfinals should be a good one as Colombia defend well and are quick and skillful too. |

Not much more to add here, but that Honduras-Argentina game was a wild one. Three PKs, two late goals, lots of chances. It was sloppy, but it was entertaining. cheers, hobbes |

This is what struck me too about how Brazil played. They passed the ball much quicker than before in this tournament and Neymar was really effective essentially acting as the playmaker. It was an excellent display but now in the knockout rounds is where we find out if this was a one off or a sign of Brazil's new and improved form. |
