The 16 nations which have qualified for the men's football tournament in Rio: Brazil Argentina Colombia Nigeria Algeria South Africa Japan South Korea Iraq Sweden Denmark Germany Portugal Fiji Mexico Honduras Brasil want Neymar to lead their long sought after Olympic title this year in Rio. Understandably Barcelona, who are not obligated to release Neymar for Olympic duty do not want him playing both Copa America Centenario and the Olympics. The CBF then have to choose which competition they want Neymar to compete in and it looks like it will be the Olympics, where Neymar will be one of the 3 overage players on the team. |

The draw took place today and the groups will look like this: Group A Brazil South Africa Iraq Denmark Group B Sweden Colombia Nigeria Japan Group C Fiji Korea Republic Mexico Germany Group D Algeria Portugal Honduras Argentina Brazil have to like their group as they received an accessible host nation group. Mexico I think should be satisfied with their Group C as they look to defend their title. Fiji will be outclassed but Korea and Germany obviously will be the two teams competing with Mexico for the two spots to qualify out of their group. Group B may be the most balanced with Sweden, Nigeria, Colombia and Japan. Honduras got a difficult group as they must face Argentina, Portugal and Algeria. |

I'm with Dr. Z, Groups B and D look pretty well balanced. We do not know which overage players will be used (other than Neymar for Brazil apparently) so that also will effect how we view these teams but as often Men's Olympic football is one of the more unpredictable international competitions around. Apart from Argentina in 2004 and 2008, look who the last 3 other Olympic champions have been-Mexico, Cameroon & Nigeria. |

Does anyone know why Honduras is only bringing two overage players? Not only that, I was sort of surprised that Quioto is one of them. I like Quioto and think he's lively and dangerous, but depending how they set up, he might not even start with Elis and Lozano out there. cheers, hobbes |

Don't know. Roger Espinoza said he was surprised/disappointed, but kind of brushed it off by saying the younger guys that qualified deserved the opportunity. |

I see a few nations only brought 2 overage players. A little surprising on Honduras' part as hobbes notes, one of their overage players Quioto may not even start! While I did not expect any Euro 2016 winners, I did think Portugal would have included a few more players known outside of Portugal. And surprisingly not a single player from league champion Benfica. I have a sneaky suspicion Colombia may end up being pretty good. Plus every Olympics there usually is a Asian or African nation which exceeds expectations. There are plenty of candidates here for that, especially Japan, Korea, Nigeria and Algeria. |

It looks like a pretty wide open tournament but the pressure will certainly be on Brazil to finally win Olympic Gold. If they don't win it, I can see Colombia or Germany winning it. I don't think Argentina, Mexico, Portugal, Nigeria, Japan or Korea are good enough this year. The tournament schedule: GROUP A Aug. 4 in Brasilia Iraq vs. Denmark Aug. 4 in Brasilia Brazil vs. South Africa Aug. 7 in Brasilia Denmark vs. South Africa Aug. 7 in Brasilia Brazil vs. Iraq Aug. 10 in Salvador Denmark vs. Brazil Aug. 10 in Sao Paulo South Africa vs. Iraq GROUP B Aug. 4 in Manaus Sweden vs. Colombia Aug. 4 in Manaus Nigeria vs. Japan Aug. 7 in Manaus Sweden vs. Nigeria Aug. 7 in Manaus Japan vs. Colombia Aug. 10 in Salvador Japan vs. Sweden Aug. 10 in Sao Paulo Colombia vs. Nigeria GROUP C Aug. 4 in Salvador Fiji vs. South Korea Aug. 4 in Salvador Mexico vs. Germany Aug. 7 in Salvador Fiji vs. Mexico Aug. 7 in Salvador Germany vs. South Korea Aug. 10 in Belo Horizonte Germany vs. Fiji Aug. 10 in Brasilia South Korea vs. Mexico GROUP D Aug. 4 in Rio de Janeiro Honduras vs. Algeria Aug. 4 in Rio de Janeiro Portugal vs. Argentina Aug. 7 in Rio de Janeiro Honduras vs. Portugal Aug. 7 in Rio de Janeiro Argentina vs. Algeria Aug. 10 in Brasilia Argentina vs. Honduras Aug. 10 in Belo Horizonte Algeria vs. Portugal QUARTERFINALS Aug. 13 in Sao Paulo Game 1: 1A vs. 2B Aug. 13 in Salvador Game 2: 1B vs. 2A Aug. 13 in Belo Horizonte Game 3: 1C vs. 2D Aug. 13 in Brasilia Game 4: 1D vs. 2C SEMIFINALS Aug. 17 in Rio de Janeiro Game 5: Game 1 winner vs. Game 3 winner Aug. 17 in Sao Paulo Game 6: Game 2 winner vs. Game 4 winner BRONZE-MEDAL GAME Aug. 20 in Belo Horizonte Game 5 loser vs. Game 6 loser GOLD-MEDAL GAME Aug. 20 in Rio de Janeiro Game 5 winner vs. Game 6 winner |

Nigeria have been training in Atlanta and were supposed to get a charter flight to Manaus, the site of their game on Thursday night. but Nigeria's sports ministry did not make the payments in time to the charter airline and the team are stuck in Atlanta! The bill has finally been paid and they'll have a comfy charter plane now but they won't fly out until early morning Thursday and won't arrive in Manaus until 7 hours before kickoff against Japan! Don't expect much then from Nigeria in that game. |

Mexico starts off with its toughest group opponent today. Should be a good test against Germany, a team which has been Mexico's downfall before (Germany eliminated Mexico from the 1986 and 1998 World Cups.) Pressure on Mexico then as the shadow of 2012's gold medal hangs over this team. Personally I do not think it is as good but it still should be a difficult team to beat. Watch for Peralta and Lozano in attack. I see Germany has both Bender brothers on its roster as overage players. |

What an opening day of games in the men's tournament! Here are all the day's scores: Group A Iraq 0-0 Denmark Brazil 0-0 South Africa Group B Colombia 2-2 Sweden Japan 4-5 Nigeria Group C Mexico 2-2 Germany Korea 8-0 Fiji Group D Honduras 3-2 Algeria Argentina 0-2 Portugal Host Brazil got off to a horrible start as they played a 0-0 draw against a 10 man South Africa. But also credit South African GK Khune, who I believe was their keeper at the 2010 World Cup who came up with some good saves to stop Neymar and friends. This article sums up each match well certianly better than I can so I recommend reading it. What a game between Nigeria and Japan to close the day's games out. Nigeria were 5-2 up with a brilliant attacking display, maybe they got tired late on after their late arrival and gave up 2 late goals to make it close but a pretty amazing game for them. Good matches too between Sweden-Colombia and Mexico-Germany. And credit to Honduras who got an opening game win. Finally Portugal keeps up their good summer with a 2-0 win over disappointing Argentina. |

What that article doesn't tell you is that the Algerian keeper Farid Chaâl had an absolute nightmare. Abdelkader Salhi is a starter for one of the top Algerian clubs and has 12 U23 caps. For some reason, they benched him for Chaâl who had no youth caps (as far as I know) and been loaned out this season so he can get a game. Chaâl allowed a looping header by Pereira to make it 2-0. Chaâl looked like he had it, but when he leaped and he the bar as the ball hit the bar it went in as he tumbled into the netting. After Algeria dominated the second half almost totally, Chaâl dropped a ball that was a cross in name only and had it fall to Lozano who scored in the empty net. It was so bad the Hondurans came over to try to console him after the match as he fought back tears. I thought Honduras was playing a 3-4-3, but it was really more of a 5-2-3/5-4-1 in practice. Their defence is pretty poor, even as packed as it was. Palacios did not play well. However, Lozano, Quioto and Elis were dangerous enough that they only needed three men attacking for much of the game. Yet they still gave Algeria 28 shots and managed to somehow win. Now to watch some of that Nigeria-Japan match! cheers, hobbes |

As hobbes wrote Algeria's goalie was poor. And that was a game were a lot of the blame for defeat can go towards him. Algeria now face a must win game against Argentina, who are in the same boat. Argentina were simply outplayed by Portugal. There really is not much talent in this Argentine midfield and they badly lost the battle there against Portugal. Paciencia scored a nice opening goal but Pite's speculative long shot was badly let in by an error of the otherwise impeccable Geronimo Rulli in Argentina's goal. I tuned Korea-Fiji on in the 2nd half after about 50 minutes and was shocked it was just 1-0. "Good for Fiji I thought" when just then Korea scored 3 goals in 3 minutes! The Koreans really passed the ball well but we won't know until Sunday when they play the Germans whether that was due to the Koreans good play or the helplessness of Fiji. hobbes, do watch Nigeria-japan, it is worth watching. I can't recall or spell his 1st name but Nigeria's midfielder Etebo is worth seeing. He scored 4 times against Japan. |

Argentina were just poor yesterday versus Portugal. Full credit to the Portuguese who played well. But as enganche wrote, Argentina's midfield was missing in action. not all that surprising though as this midfield does not include any real standouts. Very disappointing play from Correa who was playing behind Calleri. He slightly improved after Lo Celso and Pavon came on as Correa moved wide left, Pavon to the right and Lo Celso played behind the striker. I think Argentina need to use this formation and these attackers against Algeria and Honduras which have now become must win games. While I did not hold out high expectations for this team coached by Vasco Olarticochea, I do want them to at least make the last 8, anything less is absolute failure. The only consolation is I guess Brazil did not play well either and could only draw against the 10 men of South Africa. |
