GUTTED...SOOO close to advancement & felt like someone just took it from us in the cruelest fashion <_< It's what makes the beautiful game, such a cruel one at the same time. First off, I'm very happy to admit that I was totally wrong about Jermaine Jones, who is playing like a man possessed in Brazil...and what a GOLAZO!! Bradley was much better than v Ghana & unlucky to not have scored. Howard proved, yet again, why he's one of the world's best GKs. Zusi IMO earned a starting spot at RM, while Fabian Johnson is proving that JK moving him to RB was a stroke of genius. How about Yedlin? Unfortunately, Cameron was the goat in this game...just a really bad performance & we didn't get much from Bedoya either. Can't remember Bedoya even being on the field.SOOO proud of our USMNT & truly believe we can achieve something v Germany...but, DAMN, it's going to require extraordinary effort & wonder how much we have left after today & whether we can regroup in just 3 days! |

I think Cameron played ok but really gets noticed for the first gaffe and that is sounds like it was likely his responsibility on the last play. But between the two he was ok...yeah, I guess that sounds desperate. But Jones and Besler are the two that I've been extremely thrilled with. You're right about Bedoya. I had forgotten he was in the game until near the end of the first half. For all the criticism level at JK going into the World Cup, I think he has this team playing well and the players believing. And for the complaints he has received about his ability tactically, he has fared well there too. And if we were playing and planning for 2018...the I'm damn excited about the Russia games. |

Yes it was Cameron Shell, and he had the mis-hit kick that caused the first goal as well. The darn guy was directly involved in both Portugal goals. Just a nightmare game when it counted. |

Since it is being discussed both here and in the World Cup thread, I am going to go ahead and post what i wrote there about both teams being in the fix for a tie: "Aside from the obvious fact that is would be the grossest of all sportsmanship violations, it is seemingly impossible to fix such a match as a tie without it being patently obvious to all but the most casual observers. It is one thing for one player or one side to fix a match by offering a single defensive breakdown to let in a goal at one or two points in a match. It is quite another for both teams to be trying not to score for an entire game even when the inevitable opportunities arise. In my opinion that would become obvious to all over the course of an entire game. But as raconteur alluded to, if the game is still tied late in the offing, it would only make sense for both teams to become fully defensive and tone down their attacks to their mutual benefit." Maybe I have rose colored glasses, I just don't see two proud soccer nations laying off in this game unless time is dwindling....

I guess since my expectations were low, I'm not quite as devastated by the gut-punch at the end, but I do think the team's continual miscues in the final minutes is becoming worrisome. Bradley in particular has made two really poor decisions with the ball at the end of each of the first two group games. Bradley?! It has been the tournament of the unexpected. Speaking of which, Jermaine Jones has always been the subject of a great disconnect for me. I don't watch a lot of European football, but I'd see him with the Nats and it was scarcely believable that *this guy* was a key player on a good CL side. These past two matches he sure has played up to his pedigree. Another guy who played, once upon a time, for a good CL team, DMB, has probably given me as much pleasure as watching any of the guys out there so far. Looking like some kind of wizened, grinning, skinny Buddha, he somehow not only hangs on but has helped calm the back line. I keep worrying about him over there, but he's quite the inspirational figure. Howard had the incredible reaction save, but he wasn't top-notch, IMO. I'm still no Klinsmann fan, but as happened a number of times during qualifying, he does roll a lot of sevens with his substitutes, and thank God for that. A riveting, epic game. |

john, I have to tell you, but you have been watching teams play for ties for your entire life without knowing it. WCQ. Champions League. The list is endless. There may not be a precise agreement, but often times it suits both sides to end up nil-nil and that is how they go about their business. I don't think anyone feels these matches are "fixed." I liked what Donovan said in an interview about what Ghana and Portugal will say if there is a tie. Landon said, "Hey they had their chances against us and Germany. They made their own situation (or something like this)." Both Germany and the US have earned the right, if they so see fit at some point in the match, to call it a day and lesson the risk of injuires or cards as both move thru to the next round. Someone should sit Johannsson down and explain this to him before he goes in as a 90th min sub..... |

Geez, Vince, I am over 60 years old, i know all that! But if you don't think both these 2 teams will come out 100% trying to score in the first half, then I have to tel you that i think you will be greatly surprised yourself. |

funny that you mention this guy. At the half I spoke to a buddy of mine & we both came to the conclusion that Jones needs to stop passing the rock & take some long distance shots. A couple of times he passed to Bradley, who in return did squat. We both had seen Jones take some long distance shots in the past & felt that he could come up big. Little did we know that he would do just that in minute 64. I can honestly say he sent me out of control. My Wife is still mad cause I jumped attempted to hug her - screamed - made the dog cower & screamed some more

Combined ESPN/Univision ratings averaged 24.7 million viewers, a record, and less than a million below the figure for last year's BCS college football championship game. Genuinely remarkable, particularly given the under count of people watching in bars and on-line. |

Great news about the ratings but not too surprising considering how much buzz there had been about this game. Roosevelt with the line of the week here,
Just a wonderful description of Beasley as a grinning, skinny Buddha!Funny how many of the players we doubted pre tournament-Beasley, Beckerman, Jones have been among the US' best contributors while Bradley, the supposed star of the midfield has been one of the bigger disappointments. 4 points from 2 game sin this group is pretty damn good, the US controls its destiny going into the final match, that is more than we could have hoped for before this all begun. Klinsmann has done a good job preparing this team, whether we agreed with all his personnel decisions or not. |
