As Tony wrote Beckerman is more steady but I think the reason Jones starts is that he is able to cover more ground than Beckerman does as he is quicker and better able to close down opposing midfielders, plus he is more dynamic when he does play the ball (although clearly not always accurate with those passes.) Beckerman, on the other hand is better able I think to protect the central defenders as he is more likely to "stay home," defend and plug the gaps. However, I can see Jones getting a card, maybe red, in a physical match like we're sure to see vs. Ghana. I may have this backwards than others but to me it seems, if the above thoughts are agreed upon (which seems pretty reasonable), that Beckerman should start against Ghana. Safer defensive option in the must win game. Or does the speed aspect overpower the safe choice defensively? I think you could go either way with Portugal. Jones in against Germany where, if the common thought is Germany has the group secure by then, they may be less interested in pushing forward meaning the risky nature of Jones' game might not punish us? And his physical nature will come in handy in what is likely to be a physical game. It seems to me that we are aiming for a W, T, and L. Not aiming for a loss, but realistically. We'll need goals in the first game if we are hoping 4 points gets us through. |
