I'd bet that Chandler starts at right back or at least plays a half in this game. It'd be a good game to judge his readiness. |

A fascinating article on where Klinsmann has been using Fabian Johnson in training camp, hint not at either left back or left midfield! Bizarrely Klinsmann has been using Johnson at right back! Huh? |

Following up on autogol's post, NBC Sports speculates the lineup Klinsmann used at last night's open practice will likely be what we see tonight. And this is how the team lined up: —————-Howard————— Johnson–Besler–Cameron–Beasley ————Jones—–Bradley——— Zusi———Dempsey———-Bedoya —————-Altidore—————- Note Johnson at right back, Cameron not Gonzalez paired with Besler and Bedoya taking the Landon Donovan role on the left of midfield. |

I don't know how often Bedoya plays on the left for Nantes, but Zusi frequently plays there for SKC. Both are right-footed. |

Actually like the projected starting XI...just not sure about Johnson at RB & not a fan of Jones. |

Jones and Bradley don't complement one another very well. I love me some DMB, truly, but even if he can continue to hang on against Azerbaijan, tick, tick, tick... I'm not sure where the possession will come from or why Johnson is on the right. I like Cameron-Besler very much, but CB pairing experimentation this late in the game is not ideal. Azerbaijan may not be Portugal or Germany, but I also wonder just what the chemistry is like in the dressing room at this point. I'll be happy if they can put together a focused, coherent performance. |

I know nothing about Azerbaijan, and I don't know why I would. FIFA has them ranked in the neighborhood of Jamaica. The squad is mostly players from local Azerbaijani clubs along with a couple of players in Turkey, one in Russia, and two in the German second division. The apparently organized around 20 years ago. Nothing much to go on there. That said, they made a respectable show in UEFA group F qualifying including ties with Russia and Israel along with a win over North Ireland and I would expect them to be reasonably composed and in good spirit. They also had a match against Portugal last year (lost 2-nil) in the qualifying rounds and that may provide a useful point for comparison. While one could expect the games against Turkey and Nigeria to be more competitive, this is a particularly important game for USA. The yanks need to rally the locker room and bring a lot of fire to this game in order to put the roster questions in the past. If they waiver on effort or fall into periods without purpose it signals trouble. I'm not looking for much tactically beyond a coherent effort in the back and positivity in the attack. Any question marks about things like Altidore's form or who starts at wingback, etc. are a distant second to me for this match. |

I guess this match is a big deal for Azerbaijan. Good on them, I hope they can shine a bit. http://www.mlssoccer.com/worldcup/2014/new...or-us-national- But USA must make no doubt about the final outcome. |

This will be the lineup tonight but apparently it will be in a 4-4-2 formation with Dempsey joining Altidore up top and with the US in a midfield diamond with Bradley at the top, much like he was used so effectively a few months ago versus Mexico. Should be interesting to see how this works against Berti Vogts' Azerbaijan. Maybe not the greatest of opponents but should be worth viewing. |

And Dempsey is a late scratch because of groin soreness (hold your jokes!). Supposedly a precautionary move but something else to be concerned about. Wondolowski takes Dempsey's place in the lineup. |

No need to panic, but hardly good enough, imo. Not enough cohesive play or opportunities created from the run of play. We didn't learn much about the inexperienced back four as Azerbaijan was rarely threatening. I do like the idea of a 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield. However, Bradley needs to be much more effective at the top of that diamond, and Jones makes me nervous at the back of the diamond. The play of Zusi, Bedoya and Wondolowski (except for his finishing) was encouraging in the first half. Nice contributions from subs Davis, Diskerud and Johansson. |

A 2-0 US win with 2nd half goals from subs Mix Diskerud and Aron Johannsson. A sloppy 1st half from the supposed starting team. In the 2nd half subs Davis, Diskerud and Johannsson made a difference. Davis' dead ball ability set up both goals, Diskerud knocked in a rebound for his goal, Johannsson headed in a corner while wide open for the 2nd. Gonzalez for Cameron, Chandler for Beasley, Davis for Zusi (with Bedoya switching sides), Johannsson for Wondolowski and Diskerud for bedoya were the subs. Azerbaijan also tired which probably contributed to the subs looking better too but overall a first game together with the final squad, a win against a pretty weak opponent but a chance to get the team on the field. I think the Turkey and Nigeria games against higher quality opponents will be more telling. One additional thought Jones stayed deeper in midfield and cleaned things up pretty well while Bradley had more freedom to create. I thought that worked all right and want to see more of that in these next two matches. |

Not sure what else to add really as shelsoccer and raconteur have hit on the main points from this game I think. Much better work will be needed so let us see what improvement the team makes on Sunday vs Turkey. Is Chandler at left back and Johnson at right back, really the best way to utilize either player? |
