An article on the US' pre World Cup training camp, prior to the US' 3 pre World Cup friendlies the team will train at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Quote:

Why Stanford?

“I was totally amazed when I saw [the facilities] for the first time,” Klinsmann said. “We have everything we need to do a good preparation there. This is going to be the foundation of the World Cup, so it’s huge.”

As for the mild climate ahead of warmer Brazil …

“The climate is ideal. We can really work the team hard and focus before we go into the more tropical areas, obviously Brazil, but our last step in our preparation will be Florida for six days. … It is a dry climate, it’s fresh air. We can add more sessions into that period than we usually would do. … We can risk the guys will have some heavy legs, tired legs, because they can put their legs up in the evening. They also need to get that feeling that, ‘Okay, through a lot of work, I will benefit in Brazil. The more I do in that time period at Stanford, the more I will be stronger in Brazil.’ It will be a lot of fun, it will be a lot of work in a positive environment, in a great energy environment such as a college campus.”

 probably not John but reading the article it points out how the US trained at Princeton before South Africa 2010 and at Cary NC before 2006 so the team does go on the road and stays at locations near its first preparatory match prior to beginning its World Cup preparations.

I have been to Stanford's campus, I can think of a lot worse places to train!

Actually, there are coeds to ogle at the Carson facility. It's on the campus of Cal State Domingues Hills. They just aren't as intelligent as the ones at Stanford (which might be a good thing).

And here is the 30 player team:

GOALKEEPERS (3) : Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

DEFENDERS (11) : DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Timmy Chandler (Nürnberg), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Clarence Goodson (San Jose Earthquakes), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Michael Parkhurst (Columbus Crew), DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle Sounders FC)

MIDFIELDERS (10) : Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Maurice Edu (Philadelphia Union), Julian Green (Bayern Munich), Jermaine Jones (Besiktas), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

FORWARDS (6) : Jozy Altidore (Sunderland), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders FC), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

Some preliminary thoughts:
-No Eddie Johnson!
-Green did make it, Shea did not
-Yedlin, Chandler and Brooks did make it in defense
-Ream and Orozco were defenders not called in.

Wow no Eddie Johnson is a surprise. I know he has not played well with DC United but he was a pretty major contributor in WCQ. His omission is a big shock.

Also missing are Shea, Feilhaber, Ream and Orozco.

Looks like JK is not sold on either Evans or Cameron at right back and that is why Yedlin and Chandler were both called in as well. This may be one of the most interesting battles in training camp.

Well, you have to feel sorry for Eddie Johnson. Maybe there is "more to the story"?

Somebody will have to remimd me or tell me why Joe Corona even earns this all important callup.

Wahl was wrong on Chandler and Corona among others. I don't think he has any special knowledge, other than his own opnion, into the NT whatsoever.

Bingo. Is it too late to bring 'Dolo back?

EJ's omission is not a great surprise, but I do think he'll be missed--he scores goals in the red, white, and blue. I recognize Boyd's been hot with his club, but he's no proven international scorer.

What's the fascination with Brad Davis at this point? Is he really better than Brek Shea?

If Corona plays, at least we can chant "Joe Corona" to the tune of "My Sharona"!

Corona can be a pretty dangerous attacker, I am glad he gets an opportunity even if he likely is one of the leading midfield candiidates to get cut.

A player not previously mentioned but missing from this roster is Danny Williams.

Good point about the heavy competition at right back. To the 4 players Tony named: Cameron, Evans, Yedlin and Chandler, I'd also add Parkhurst who is better on the right than he is on the left. Klinsmann is really conducting an open casting call at right back!

Danny Williams apparently had a good season with Reading but not in JK's eyes good enough.

So who do you guys think are the 7 candidates to get cut?

I'm going to go with: Parkhurst, Evans, Yedlin, Brooks, Davis, Corona and Boyd.

My seven picks for cuts: Chandler, Brooks, Yedlin, Davis, Edu, Corona & Boyd.

Of those 7, the one I would be least surprised to see included, would be Boyd...if he continues his HOT club form & Wondo struggles in the Send-Off series & camp.

No need to pick the seven cuts now. Injuries will play a role. They always do. Unfortunately.

Speculation is half the fun of this board Vince!

But I do take JK at his word, any of these guys have a shot at the roster with a late hot run through training and the final warm up games, and we know injuries do tend to flare up and surprise at the worst times.

Trouble is at this late date, one would hope the manager was forming his top 12 to 14 into a well oiled, cohesive unit, not still auditioning bubble players. You can't give all the bubble players a lot of game speed playing time for a fair evaluation, and also accomplish the former.

I first thought JK was bringing 30 into the final camp to enhance the training environment, but his comment about that was that it actually makes training more difficult, so I guess he was really undecided about more roster spots than just a few.

In spite of JK's seeming snubbing of Chandler up until now, I will be more than a little surpised if his level of play does not earn him a spot.
Edu garnered a ton of playing time through qualifiers but just could not perform consistently. One would think they have seen plenty enough of him to decide either way.
Yedlin is out of the blue, last minute, great MLS play or not.
Also think Davis, Brooks and Corona are long shots.

I hate doing a me too post but I think Yogi those would be my 7 picks for cuts too. I believe Chandler does have a good chance of making the squad as he brings an attacking dimension none of the other right backs, other than Evans, can bring to the table. But Chandler is IMO a better defender than Evans, a true midfielder moonlighting at right back.

I think Corona and Bedoya are fighting for one position on the team, Bedoya is ore of a natural winger, Corona more of a creative force and a player who can operate either out wide or in the middle.
