How about this thread to discuss everything other than hockey relating to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics? The Netherlands are dominating speed skating, winning every gold medal available so far and 7 of the 9 total medals. The Mulder twins took home 2 medals on Monday, Michel winning the 500m gold with twin Ronald taking third. And a 3rd Dutchman Jan Smeekens finished 2nd but only lost to Michel Mulder by fractions of a second in a controversial finish. Canada are dominating the mogul skiing while alpine skiing has been pretty wide open. Bode Miller and Aksel Lund Svindal were the favorites in the men's downhill but they finished 8th and 4th respectively. Austria's Matthias Meyer, the son of a former Olympic skiing gold medalist (Helmut) won the gold, Italy's Christof Innerhofer was 2nd, Kjetil Jansrud of Norway was 3rd. I love seeing the Tyrolean Italian names like Innerhofer! |

Good job, Sammy Maudlin...thanks Disappointed that Bode Miller hasn't done better...thought he would win multiple medals for the USA. Wasn't very thrilled with Ashley Wagner's reaction to her scores after her figure skating program...very "sour grapes-like" <_< Looking forward to seeing Yuna Kim of South Korea (Queen Yuna) competing & winning the gold in women's figure skating

Not particularly a fan of snowboarding but SHOCKED that Shaun White was shut out of any medal, much less a gold

My wife is disappointed Russian figure skater Evgeni Plushenko ahd to pull out of the competition with an injury. She loved watching him because he is, in her words, "such a drama queen." This article seems to confirm she is not the only one who thinks that way!. Personally I enjoyed watching Russian female skater Tatiana Volosozhar, the female half of the Gold Medal winning pairs figure skaters! ![]() An amazing finish yesterday in the women's downhill with 2 skiers finishing dead even for first! Slovenia's Tina Maze and Switzerland's Dominique Gisin shared a gold medal, Gisin's Swiss teammate Lara Gut was third in one of the more exciting woman's downhill competitions I have ever seen. |

What a speed skating competition the Netherlands are having in both the men's and women's division. On Sunday Netherlands won another sweep of the emdals in the women's 1500m with Jorien ter Mors taking the gold. Yesterday's men's 1500m was the only gold the Dutch did not win and that they only lost after they needed to review the computerized timing and determined Poland's Zbigniew Brodka edged Netherlands Koen Verweij by .003 of a second! An amazingly close finish. Verweij was not happy and pouted a bit but maybe that is the pressure of being the only Dutch not to win a gold in speed skating!

Looking forward to the women's figure skating starting on Wednesday...and watching Kim Yuna of Korea win gold again! She's the only non-American athlete I'm 110% behind

 True, very true, even more so after the US hockey team decided to take the bronze medal game off. Actually overall this has not been a particularly good winter Olympics for the US, a few skiers, bobsledders and ice skaters have won medals but most of the US' medals have been won in snowboarding and what I always used to know as "hot dogging skiing," I guess they call it freestyle skiing (the one with skiers trying to do mid air flips, etc.) But both of those are relatively new sports which have only been part of the Olympics for the past dozen years 4 years ago the US won 37 overall medals in Vancouver, it does not look like the US will equal that total in Sochi. And mainly that is due I think to the disastrous speed skating, both long and short track, competition the US has had in Sochi. In fact the story of the Olympics for me has been how dominant the Netherlands have been in speed skating. I know they have always been known for producing good speed skaters but in these Olympics they have been completely dominant. They have won 23 speed skating medals overall, the most any nation has every won in a single sport in any Winter Olympics. |
