That sucks. Plenty of other sources, including Reuters, confirming that the Ukrainian Fed has called off the game.

Federation president says they don't want to leave Ukraine at this time. Too bad they couldn't have made that decision sooner.

Is it too early start boycotting the 2018 Russian World Cup?

This is the first time I can recall an out-and-out cancellation. I understand this and Ukraine FA has made the right decision.

Vince, didn't the US have a friendly vs Egypt cancelled just as the first Egyptian uprising (the one against Mubarak's government) was starting?

On the bright side I am now free to watch Spain-Italy and France-Netherlands on Wednesday!

On the dark side, this sucks for the US team. Too late to arrange an international friendly now so I guess Klinsmann has them play shirts vs skins at their German training base.

Few could have imagined the situation in Ukraine escalating this much, three weeks ago and by then it was probably already too late to arrange an alternate friendly, every other team is booked. maybe this is also the problem in not scheduling a World Cup participant? You know if Ukraine was going to Brazil, even if they could not play at home they would have found a way to play this match wherever possible. But without the World Cup necessity, the political situation there gives Ukraine the reason to backout.

Does the US even have enough players in camp to play intra-squad? I imagine the USSF will scramble to play a Bundesliga reserve team or maybe a club from a nearby country. Whatever, it won't be a quality opponent and not much of a test.

The game is back on! My guess is USSF threw some extra money Ukraine's way. As the linked article says,

Quote:

In any other year, the Americans might have concluded that this game wasn't worth the bother, much like they did in January 2011 when they called off a friendly in Egypt where the Arab Spring was gaining critical mass. But this isn't just any other year. This is a World Cup year. And otherwise marginal games take on meaning then.

I think Yogi's assumption is probably correct, some extra money went Ukraine's way after the Ukrainians previously announced the game was off. Gulati and Flynn acted fast!

Fingers crossed here but I'm also taking Tony DE's advice on alternate viewing!

Spain-Italy and France-Netherlands will help me get into World Cup watching shape but might not do much for the USMNT.

Good memory raconteur. I did not remember this. It is referenced above, but here is the USSF piece.

We got this. Nothing can go wrong!

Yes, I'm sure it's inappropriate on many levels, but it's gotta be a favorite movie for many of us. ;)

Well, you have to hand it to the USSF, they must have had a ready plan to move fast if Ukraine backed out.

Still a bit of a fiasco, including our roster, but if the team gets a good tough game in, then mission accomplished.

funny, that team looks more like a rugby side, garbaggio!

Sylvester Stallone in goal huh garbaggio- the precursor of Tony Meola? ;)

Probably won't be much of an atmosphere in neutral Cyprus but I am still intrigued to see what these players can do in this last tryout.

Well...

good for the Ukrainians. They took advantage of some glaring defensive errors to win 2-0 at Larnaca, scoring in each half. The US started Onyewu and John Brooks at central D and they made sure they'll be staying home in June. So did Castillo IMO; he 'played' the first hour at left back, but his partnership with Brooks was pretty wretched.

But it wasn't all bad; the US picked up the pace after sleepwalking through the first half-hour and managed a few good efforts. Bedoya probably did the most to help himself, and Shea came off the bench to make a solid contribution. Altidore had one clear chance that he headed over the bar, and Johannson nearly scored on a volley that was cleared off the line. Still, Ukraine dominated much of the game in midfield and thoroughly deserved its win.

Subject to going back and watching the last 30 minutes I slept through, the thing that worries me most is not the play of the marginal Euro-based players. It's the form of Altidore and, particularly, Dempsey.
