http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-dad...20241--nhl.html DAMMIT...really thought Pacioretty was going to be a big part of the USA's success in Sochi I'd like to see either Kyle Okposo of the NY Islanders or Bobby Ryan of Ottawa as the replacement for Pacioretty. There's also talk of Brandon Saad of Chicago as a possible choice...which I have no problem with. |

Bob McKenzie is reporting that Paccioretty is expected to be good to go for Sochi. So rest easy AF10. FWIW I'd take Saad as a replacement, but I think Patches will be in Russia. cheers, hobbes |

I remember when this happened, but totally forgot it happened. If that makes sense.... likely Canadian starting goalies Shannon Szabados and Carey Price split a pre-season game for the same team — the Tri-City Americans. Tri-City plays in the league I cover btw. Decent read here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/olym...rticle16761085/ cheers, hobbes |

Final scores from Monday February 10 games: Group A USA 9-0 Switzerland Canada 3-0 Finland USA started out a bit rough...for first 9 minutes...and then DOMINATED the Swiss! Canada & Finland were even after 2 periods, 0-0, but scored three goals in the 3rd period, finally solving the Finnish goalie, Raty! USA & Canada have clinched byes & automatic spots in semifinals but will play each other on Wednesday morning...for the Group A title! Should be fun to watch...hopefully, cooler heads will prevail, instead of the brawling that has taken place, lately, between the two teams! Can't wait for the men's tournament to start...still bitter about 2002 & 2010 and would LOVE to break hobbes' & his fellow Canadians' hearts, even more than Russia & Putin, by winning gold

If anyone needs a mood-setter, here is Canada playing the USSR in the best hockey game I have ever seen. The Soviets score two of the best goals I have ever seen. It's Game 2 of the best-of-three final of the 1987 Canada Cup. It's rare to find the whole game (I have it on VHS and the official tournament DVD is edited). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO5K2tCqYUw cheers, hobbes |

Who is ready for Day 1? ![]() Projected lines (RD-LD and R-C-L) for Wednesday's first games.... SWEDEN v CZECH REPUBLIC SWEDEN 30 Lundqvist 50 Gustavsson 1 Enroth 55 Kronwall 52 Jo. Ericsson 3 Ekman-Larsson 65 Karlsson 27 Oduya 4 Hjalmarsson 7 Tallinder, 23 Edler (susp) 92 Landeskog 40 Zetterberg 20 Steen 22 D. Sedin 19 Backstrom 21 L.Eriksson 41 Nyquist 14 Berglund 11 Alfredsson 62 Hagelin 16 Kruger 42 Ji. Ericsson 18 Silfverberg, 90 Johansson CZECH REPUBLIC 53 Salak 1 Kovar 31 Pavelec 2 Zidlicky 23 Michalek 32 Rozsival 7 Kaberle 25 Krajicek 8 Barinka 5 Smid 68 Jagr 14 Plekanec 10 Cervenka 89 Voracek 46 Krejci 18 Palat 93 Nedved 26 Elias 91 Erat 67 Frolik 12 Novotny 9 Michalek 11 Hanzal 83 Hemsky 3 Gudas (illness) Radko Gudas of Tampa has the flu and it looks the Czechs may scratch Martin Hanzal and Ales Hemsky — two of the NHLers on their roster. They are definitely scratching Winnipeg Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec. I've read that SKA St. Petersburg man Alex Salak is starting in goal, but it could also be Palat from fellow KHL team Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg. Edler is suspended otherwise the Swedes lineup generally makes sense to me. Their defence looks pretty good on paper. I may not be giving them enough credit to be serious title contenders. I suspect this should be a relatively easy win for them despite this being one of the marquee games of the preliminary round. SWITZERLAND V LATVIA SUISSE 1 Hiller 20 Berra 52 Stepan 6 Weber 90 Josi 16 Diaz 7 Streit 31 Seger 72 Von Gunten 5 Blindenbacher 96 Brunner 88 Romy 14 Wick 22 Niederreiter 28 Plus 82 Moser 23 Bodenmann 12 Cunti 70 Hollenstein 24 Suri 10 Ambuhl 48 Bieber Scratches: 3 Vauclair, 43 Trachsler LATVIA 31 Masalskis 1 Mustukovs 50 Gudlevskis 6 Rekis 8 Ozolinsh 37 Bartulis 32 Kulda 81 Pujacs 11 Sotnieks 9 K. Redlihs 29 Freibergs 16 Daugavins 12 Vasljevs 15 Karsums 70 Indrasis 28 Girgensons 91 Kenins 24 M. Redlihs 5 Sprukts 10 Darzins 79 Pavlovs 3 Stals 47 Cipulis 21 Berzins, 51 Jass I think the Latvians are actually going to be not bad and the Swiss won't blow anyone out. Masalskis is a veteran and if he plays well in goal I fully expect the Latvians to give the Swiss a tight first game. Plus I am very hopeful we have a full house of drunken Latvians — international hockey's best fans. cheers, hobbes |

Edler suspended? Interesting...thanks for the analysis, hobbes. The Czechs are an interesting team...if Jagr & Nedved play great, they could surprise & I don't see Sweden blowing them out. However, it's their defense & GK that will take the Czechs as far as they can go. The Swiss are going to be a tough out, for everybody, & I don't see Latvia being much of a challenge, frankly. FINALLY, the men's tournament is here

I think the Swiss are going to be a very tough out, but I think the Swiss-Latvia game will be a 2-1 kind of game. cheers, hobbes |

Group A USA 2-3 Canada Both teams had already qualified for the semifinals in the women's tournament but that doesn't matter when it comes to the most intense & best rivalry in women's hockey. Both goalies were amazing, especially Jessie Vetter of the USA, despite the loss. USA actually led, 1-0 after two periods. The USA's defensive zone play MUST improve for the next game & wasn't very impressed with the officiating in the game...both ways! Round 1 to Canada  ...but the more important battle will culminate next Thursday & the USA will be ready

Sorry for the delay...meant to post this much earlier in the day...but here are today's results for the men's tournament: USA 7-1 Slovakia Russia 5-2 Slovenia Finland 8-4 Austria Canada 3-1 Norway The USA led 1-0 after the first period...pretty even...and Slovakia tied it, 1-1 just 24 seconds into the second period. Think it was exactly what the USA needed, as they DOMINATED the rest of the period, scoring 6 unanswered goals. No scoring in the third period but the game was over by then. Paul Stastny & Phil Kessel had great games but, then again, everybody had a solid game. Jonathan Quick started in goal and, while he wasn't really tested, he made the saves he needed to. Canada had a fight v Norway...but had too much firepower in the end. Very similar to Russia, who didn't overwhelm the critics with their performance v Slovenia. Finland started very poorly, even falling behind 1-0 within the first minute, but obviously set things right afterwards. Canada plays Austria on Friday...fully expect a dominant performance by the Canadians. And on Saturday...USA v Russia

You guys forgot to mention Switzerland's last minute 1-0 win over Latvia and Sweden defeating the Czech Republic in other openers. What time is USA-Russia? I'd like to watch that one. |

Oops...sorry about that, Yogi. Will try to remember to include all scores from now on. USA-Russia will be on at 7:30am/4:30am (ET/PT) on Saturday morning. I was actually up for the Slovakia game...same time...on Thursday morning but, whether I'm up for the Russia game or not, I'll set my DVR & watch it, LIVE or as soon as I get up

No worries af10, I just mentioned those two games because hobbes gave us a good preview of each match and some of those teams expected lines. Bad news for Sweden with Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg going out with a back injury. he is now out for the Olympics and probably beyond. he joins Sedin and Franzen as Swedish stars out injured. |

Final scores on Friday: Group B Canada 6-0 Austria Finland 6-1 Norway Group C Sweden 1-0 Switzerland Czech Republic 4-2 Latvia I know Switzerland is not an easy opponent but didn't think Sweden would struggle like they did. With no Zetterberg, Sedin or Franzen, they're in BIG trouble and, unless Lundqvist plays out of his mind...which is possible...I don't see them getting any medal. Canada finally awoke...of course, it was Austria...& Jeff Carter, of the LA Kings, notched a hat trick! I think that Canada-Finland game on Sunday morning should be pretty awesome
