Tony DE is spot on about Sanneh. Loved the guy during the WC 2002 build up and tournament. He was a converted forward who was just quality for a good two year period on defense. I wanted to put him on my list, but his period of excellence was just too brief. Truth is, same can be said for Lalas. Too short a period of really stellar play (plus, he is too slow for my starting XI).

Heck, Mathis was as hot as any player we ever had for a brief spell. He carried us during WCQ in 2001 til he tore up the knee. Had he stayed healthy, hot and dedicated to his craft, who knows?

Reviewing my list again, I realize that I had much the same sentiments as john. My team is made up of guys who would go down with the ship. And more defensively minded than some others choices.

I never found the early 1990s clubs as competent or enthralling as the successful ones we have had since 2000. Watching those teams, it was always a feeling of "Let's just hold on and hope Wynalda scores to make it interesting." When we play now, I nearly always expect a result. I never did twenty years ago. You really never knew how it would go. There just was not enough quality and consistence.

My choices would be different if club and national team play were considered but since the criteria was only national team play, my picks would be:

GK-Friedel
RB-Cherundolo
CB-Pope
CB-Lalas
LB-Caligiuri
MF-Dooley
MF-Reyna
MF-Ramos
MF-Donovan
FW-Patenaude
FW-McBride

I never saw Patenaude play of course but like Merengue and hobbes noted you can not ignore the only hat trick by a US player in World Cup history plus 4 career World Cup goals. That is 3 more than Wynalda has.
