The draw is still two weeks away but thought it might be fun to start debating the roster & starting XI, though it's bound to change by next spring! Here's my starting XI, if the WC started next month:

-----------------Howard-------------
Cameron----Omar---Besler------FJ
-----------Bradley----Jones---------
--Donovan--Dempsey--Johannsson
--------------Altidore-----------------

Subs: Beasley, Brooks, Diskerud, Bedoya, Zusi & EJ.

The wildcard IMO is Cherundolo...if he's healthy by next spring, he starts at RB :)

Johansson is not a flank player, let alone left footed. I think it's much more likely that Beasley will be the left back and F. Johnson will start as the attacking left-sided midfielder.

..not to mention Johannsson has a tall hill to climb to even become a starter for the USMNT. He showed some wonderful flashes, but he was also rough and at times invisible for long stretches. Bottom line, he needs a quite a bit more experience.

If it started tomorrow I am also convinced JK would start Beasley.

If Bradley, Demsey, Altidore, and Donovan are all on their A games, and the defense becomes solid and dependable, the US will a force in the Cup. But all those kinds of good things rarely converge at the right time.

I asked this question in the US players abroad section but it likely will have a greater audience here, whatever happened to winger Josh Gatt? He was with Molde in Norway but I have not heard his name mentioned in months. At the start of this year he was a national team candidate. Is he injured? Or did he fall out of favor with Klinsmann?

Re: right back. Geoff Cameron has been mostly starting there for Stoke, and reports have him getting off to a very strong start to his second season with the Potters. If Cherundolo is old and coming off a long injury lay-off, Chandler has not shown the requisite 'commitment', and Lichaj too green, fine. But if Cameron isn't starting for the Nats at CB or in the midfield, why one (err, JK) would leave him on the bench in favor of Brad Evans at RB is mystifying.

Actually, I'm thinking the same way...but wonder, if Beasley struggles with the RM opponents, if JK makes the switch.

I like Beasley & believe that FJ is our best option at LM but I do see things changing, if DMB struggles with the LB spot at the WC.

Great point...but seems like JK prefers Cameron at CB

Of course, Cameron has had problems at RB for the USMNT this year but I still think he should be first choice there...considering he plays the same position for club. But JK seems to value inter-changeable players more than others.

Of course, if Cherundolo regains his fitness & plays regularly for Hannover, he would be my 1st choice RB...and I think most, if not all, USMNT fans would agree.

Gatt was scheduled to play in the Gold Cup but was injured and had season ending knee surgery this last summer, raconteur.

Beasley has done a nice job this year, but he is getting to the point where when he gets beat one v one as he is often prone to do, he may no longer have the blazing speed to recover. Reminescent of Cobi in his latter days come to think of it. I am not very comfortable at all with DMB being a starter anymore, particularly at the World Cup level of play, but JK has gotten a lot of mileage out of him in the qualifying run up.

Really too bad whatever Chandler's issue is, because we need that level of player on the back line fairly desperately.

Chandler's absence is the one which really gets me but let us see what 2014 can bring. Maybe Klinsmann will reconsider his position on Chandler? While Cameron looked adequate at right back vs Austria, overall the coach cannot be too optimistic on his right back choices with the aging, injury hit Cherundolo and Chandler both absent.

I think Chandler's absence might be two-fold:

1) His lack of total commitment to the USMNT...according to many sources!

2) His poor club play

Hopefully, he's now 110% committed to the USA...but his club play needs to become consistent & solid, to warrant a call-up from JK.

Chandler is cap-tied to the USA based on his appearance at the WCQ in San Pedro Sula. His options are the USA, USA or the USA if he wants to play in the WC next year or ever.

Here are Chandler's record of games played and his player ratings, per German magazine Kicker, they are notoriously harsh in rating players on a bizarre scale of 1-6, with 6 being worst and Chandler mostly gets a 3.5 to 4.0, average to slightly below average on their scale. And he has played 13 of the club's 14 league matches. That just makes his US omission even more curious as the guy is doing all right and playing regularly in one of the most difficult leagues in the world. af10 I would not describe his play as being poor with Nurnberg.

Just read the US will play South Korea on February 1 in Carson, CA, the first 2014 friendly which has been set. Obviously that is not a FIFA date so it will be for the US and Scandinavian based players. Perhaps a few from Mexico may also get selected too. It is in early March when the US will play it's next match with all players available.

Cherundolo saw his first action over the weekend since May (or was it March?), coming off the bench. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the ratings link, Yogi...does make his omission a bit more puzzling. I was just going by what I had read in numerous articles.

The Korea friendly should be very interesting...I definitely plan to go...as, if you go by what Bruce Arena of the Galaxy said, it could be our first look at Omar Gonzalez & Landon Donovan since the Galaxy were eliminated in the MLS playoffs.

Arena was quoted as saying that Landon & Omar are "not going" on loan in January, as JK has preferred for MLS players.

An article on the US training camp ahead of the Korea game in February. Interestingly part of the January camp will include 2 weeks Jan 12-25 in Sao Paulo, Brazil which is where the US has already selected its base camp for the World Cup. Klinsmann bringing the team down for a little experience of life in Brazil.
