I had not previously heard that a possible reason behind Chandler's omission has been a reluctance to fly. So he is a current version of Dennis Bergkamp then? No absolute need to fly to Scotland or Austria this week but there is to go to Brazil. This is not 1930 when teams took an ocean liner to Uruguay! Hopefully some enterprising journalist will try and find out in more detail about why a starter for Nurnberg at right back, a place of need for the US, is not being selected.

Well, if Chandler wants to play in the World Cup, he must do so for the USA. He is cap-tied as he starter versus Honduras in San Pedro Sula.

There, definitely, is more to this story.

I think we all want to hear more about Chandler's situation.

Here is a Q & A with Klinsmann where he outlines what he is looking for from these two games,

Quote:

“In general, we want to use these two friendlies to see a lot about our players. The main goal is to do well and beat both Scotland and Austria, but also to reconnect with certain players to see where they’re at. Some are coming of injuries like Michael Bradley, Fabian Johnson or John Brooks for example. We brought back Brek Shea, who’s doing well at Stoke [City] in terms of training but not getting playing time, and we want to see where he’s at. He had a good summer with us, helping us win the Gold Cup in the Final with a goal.

“Also, we’re keeping in mind evaluating everyone involved. We had a close look at the results in MLS for the playoffs. I think number-wise that worked out fine for us. We still have a lot of them available, and that allowed us to have a good feeling about leaving those five still in the playoffs back in the U.S. to get their job done. The main objective is getting results and evaluating the players six, seven months prior to the World Cup, having a close look at a kid that we haven’t had with us yet, Erick Lichaj, and see how he’s doing in training, get to know him a bit, and get a feel for his character.”

And the coach also comments that he wants the MLS players to either find a European club to go on loan or be available for the January national team training camp.

No mention anywhere of Chandler by the way.

I think I would prefer MLS players in a January training camp with the national team rather than playing 2 months on loan in Europe then returning in March to play for their MLS clubs. They'll have enough time to get themselves into ideal playing shape before the World Cup. In fact the MLS break may actually help them be fresher than European based players for instance who could be somewhat drained after a August-May league season.

I can't disagree with JK's reasoning, but I tend to agree with Tony. Also, several MLS-based nats (e.g., Besler and Zusi for SKC) will be playing CONCACAF Champions League games in February. Our roster in Brazil will be relying on MLS players to play key roles -- Besler, Zusi, Donovan, Gonzalez, Dempsey, maybe Davis. I'd like to see them get some time off this winter.

Tough break with both Dempsey and Fabian Johnson now off the roster due to injuries. This has been a year to forget for Clint Dempsey (well not for his accountant after he signed that juicy deal w/ Seattle!) and frankly in many ways for Johnson too a she has seemingly missed a lot of games with injuries too.

So these next two games will once more be a test for some fringe players.

Speaking of fringe players Joe Corona and the now healthy Herculez Gomez have both fallen out of contention in the past 4-5 months.

Lack of playing time with Tijuana I think explains that. The club changed coaches over the summer and the new coach benched Corona, who had been a consistent starter, and Gomez, struggled getting regular playing time too due to his injuries. A run of playing time in early 2014 would I think push both back into national team contention. When given the chance each has shown they can contribute to the US team.

Hopefully Lichaj gets significant playing time and looks god. Fullback seems our weakest position.

After Scotland we play Austria. Does anyone remember Sampson using the 3-6-1 lineup to beat them in the final run-up to France98?

I remember that all too well garbaggio, all too well! ;)

I also agree with you that Lichaj's possible appearance is probably the most significant development related to these two friendlies.

I have to admit I did not see this game as I was watching Portugal-Sweden and I taped Italy-Germany. So I am curious to read what those who saw it thought of the 0-0 tie. Most reviews of the game were not too favorable from either team but here are three different sets of player ratings from the game:

mlssoccer.com

NY Times

Soccer America

Curiously the ratings are kind of all over the place, some praising Jones, Evans and Kljesten's efforts others panning them. But most seemed to give credit to Bradley, Beasley and subs Johannsson and Shea.

I would hope that Lichaj, Johannsson and Shea will all see more playing time vs Austria.

Yogi, be thankful you didn't waist two hours of your life on that. Shea started miserably but then had a couple of surging runs down the left. Johansson was effective. Not much to say about Lichaj, other than he did just enough that I'd like to see more from him.

For the starters, I thought Gonzalez and Beasley were solid. Bradley was fine but not very dynamic. Same with Jones. Altidore was OK. Kljestan was out of place slotted behind Jozy. Bedoya worked hard to little effect. EJ wasn't impressive, maybe because his club situation is on his mind. Cameron was average. Evans less so. Howard came up big the one time he was really tested.

I don't think anyone "new" played themselves on to or off the Brazil roster. I hope to see better Tuesday.

It was not much to watch. Lichaj was not up to snuff, unfortunately. He seemed hurried and over-matched at times.

Glad I did not fly over for this one.
