"The U.S. is 23-0-2 in home qualifiers since losing to Honduras in September 2001 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., and 37-1-7 in qualifiers on American soil since losing to Costa Rica in 1985 at Torrance Calif."

Is that accurate?

I suppose it is and maybe I shouldn't be surprised but I sometimes see comments about how poorly we do during away qualifiers.

I'd say that is a pretty damn impressive home record for qualifiers.  And one that seems to be a winning formula for qualifying for a World Cup.

VERY accurate B)

Unfortunately, I was at that Honduras WCQ in Sept. 2001...such a BAD experience that I was BUMMED for days, until 09/11 put things in perspective :(

I was also at the Jamaica WCQ in Oct. 2001...the first sporting event after 09/11 & it was surreal...and the first two USA-Mexico "Dos A Cero" clasicos at Crew Stadium (Feb/2001 & Sep/2005) ;)

Not to go off topic...but I went to bed on September 10th, 2011 completed devastated that my favorite athlete at the time, Ed Mccaffrey (wide receiver for the Broncos), suffered a severely broken leg during Monday Night Football. It was the kind you never fully recover from and that was obvious when it happened. The next morning my mother called me and woke me up asking if I had heard what happened and to turn on the TV...she wasn't talking about Eddie Mac's broken leg...somehow going to bed devastated the night before seemed somewhat silly.

Anyways...back to american futbol if you will...

So, JK is clearly upset with the yellow card the Mexican ref gave Besler Friday night.

''It kind of just confirmed my fears before the game with the yellow card issue,'' said Klinsmann, who complained that Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez could impact the U.S. roster against El Tri.

Am I seeing tiny black helicopters or do others share the concern with ref assignments? Or is this only an issue because of what happened?

Yes, the US does have an excellent home record in qualifiers and they will likely continue that tomorrow night in Columbus. I think they'll use players like Beasley, Orozco, Torres and Corona who have experience playing regularly against Mexico's players. Likely as starters but perhaps a few will be used off the bench. I'd like to see Johannsson get some meaningful minutes in this game too. keep Mexico on the defensive by going at them with players like E. Johnson, Donovan, Dempsey and off the bench Johannsson.

I don't think it is some anti-US conspiracy but having a Mexican ref assigned to a US game, even if that ref is one of CONCACAF's highest rated referees, doing the match before Mexico plays the US is just plain wrong.

CONCACAF should be using Canadian, Salvadoran, Guatemalan and Trinidadian (i.e. nations not in the Hexagonal) referees doing many of these games and have officials from a Hexagonal nation do a game just after that ref's country played one of the competing nations not just before his country plays one of the two teams competing in the game the ref is calling.

As for the game vs Mexico, I think Klinsmann needs to use Eddie Johnson and have ago at Mexico. make them work defensively, with their potentially fragile psyche going into this game, a quick US goal could have devastating effect on Mexico.

It is inexcusable to have a referee from the nation you are playing next, officiating your previous qualifier. the ref could be above board, and apart from Besler's yellow, which as others explained was more the work of the linesman, the Mexican ref Marco Antonio Rodriguez, did all right last Friday, but it is the perception of possible impropriety which is why Rodriguez should not have been in charge of last Friday's game.

I am not really sure why there is so much pessimism here among US fans. It is the US v Mexico in Columbus, the home of "Dos a Cero," the US should rightfully be favored. Mexico may get a lift from its coaching change but the US always bounces back strongly after defeats and I suspect tonight will be no different. Plus the US is only 4 points away from qualifying with 3 games to play. In my opinion there really is little to be pessimistic about.

As for the officiating assignments,I think Sammy nailed it right on the head. It is the appearance of impropriety which makes it wrong to have as happened last week, a Mexican ref officiate a US game right before Mexico plays the US. Rodriguez, never one of my favorite referees, overall did an acceptable job last week in Costa Rica, but it just does not look right to have a Mexican ref just before Mexico plays the US. All the more when US players can, as here, miss the Mexico game due to card accumulation.

After the loss in Costa Rica and the suspension of key players we look weaker than we have since early this year . Yet, even if we lose tonight, we will remain in the top 3 of the Hex standings and still be ahead of Mexico with the 2 rounds of Hex qualifiers to play. So whatever pressure we may feel is light compared to the burdens and expectations faced by El Tri.

Current Hex standings:

Good luck to our eyewitness reporter Winslow.

Af10, I too was at those qualifiers in 2001 (pretty certain Winslow and Vince were there, too). Wish I could make it tonight but will be at work til after the final whistle. I did make it to this game 4 years ago. It was played in February in hopes of again freezing out the Mexicans but the instead of cold it was unusually warm with a heavy rainstorm passing through. Rafa Marquez got redcarded and Michael Bradley scored - 2 things we will definitely not see tonight!

As usual, good stuff on this board in the days leading up to a qualifier.

I am not one to normally be pessimistic, but this team has looked fair to poor against good level competition when without Bradley, plain and simple. True, Martin, we don't have the pressure Mexico has on it, but we are missing our field general, best scoring threat, and arguably best back line defender, all 3 for this one game. Not good at all.

That doesn't add up to the US being the favorite in my mind, except for Mexico's recent woes. But who doesn't really think the skill, desire, and knowledge are all there for El Tri to come roaring back at any moment? The only really astounding thing would be if they do not do that and don't do it pretty damn soon.

Don't like how this all adds up for this match, but will be thrilled to have you all point out to me how wrong I was tomorrow!!

(FWIW, the US is a half goal favorite by the oddsmakers)

Sitting outside the stadium, about an hour before kickoff. I'd estimate the crowd right now at about 80-20 US. Way to go!

Look forward to the match report!

The line-up: USA: Howard; F. Johnson, Goodson, González, Beasley; Jones, Beckerman; Bedoya, Dempsey, Donovan; E. Johnson

I'd like to be more optimistic, but I'm really OK about coming out of tonight with one point.

Interesting decisions from Klinsmann with F. Johnson on the right behind Bedoya and Goodson in the middle. We'll find out soon how it works.

Immediate reactions:

1. I can't think of a single US player that was less than solid. For my money, Gonzalez was the man of the match.

2. The US weathered 20-25 minutes of Mexican pressure and then took over.

3. I've never seen a Mexican team so bereft of ideas.

4. I don't often do this, but I have to give props to Campbell. A well-officiated match.

5. Klinsmann just seems to push all the right buttons. He's built depth, he trusts that depth and so does his team. His subs seem to produce. I can think back to 2006 when he was criticized for his tactical acumen -- Loew was given the credit for that -- and sometimes questioned about his motivational/training techniques. Either he's learned and matured from that, or it was all a load of crap at the time.

What a statement by "our team." THEY lost Friday but WE won today in a very impressive way. (Nah, I don't follow the "us/win and they/lose" thought process).

To keep calm and stay steady throughout the first 20 minutes or so while Mexico really pushed the issue and to turn that around and really control the match after that was a really impressive feat considering the missing players.

It is official, we are going to Brazil.

When is the draw?

(On the subject of dealing with the pressure the first 20 minutes...I really think we weren't far away from doing that in CR minus the quick goal. Had we managed to not give that up we might have turned that game around like we did this one.)

Well done Yanks!

It had to be dos a cero didn't it? Congrats to the U.S. On the win. I have plenty of negatives to say about Mexico, but credit to the US, especially the back four, for putting together a strong 90 minutes.

cheers,
