I can not even recall the US ever winning in Costa Rica in qualifying. In fact have they even drawn any games there in the past 4 qualifying cycles? Maybe no longer playing at Saprissa will help the US (remember Vince to go to the right stadium!) but Costa Rica are still going to be tough at home, have revenge from the snow match in mind and with a win on Friday the Ticos can take over first place in the group. This will be, along with the Mexico match away at the Azteca, the US' most difficult road game in the Hexagonal. The US came away from Mexico with a point but that was a then offensively struggling Mexico. This will be a different proposition as Costa Rica are far from struggling at present. |

The US had a draw in a WCQ at Samprissa in 1985, otherwise all losses. WCQ record for USA v CR: 6W 3D 8L Overall USA record v CR: 13W 5D 12L The USA and JK will play for the win. However, I share af's realistic skepticism about away officiating in WCQ's in CONCACAF. It has often been one sided against the USA. But it has gotten slightly better in recent years. Here's hoping that trend continues. |

Grant Wahl with another typically good job of setting the scene before this qualifying match. According to Wahl, the US needs 4 points, irrespective of what other nations do, in these next two games in order to assure qualification. In other words, a tie tomorrow and a win on Tuesday and the US will officially be in Brazil! Also per Wahl, despite the talk of pre match gamesmanship the Costa Rican people have been very friendly towards him (looking forward to read if Vince experiences the same) and Wahl also points out that the overall gamesmanship appears less now than it was a decade ago. Plus the National Stadium has grass not the artificial turf which also helped make Saprissa such a difficult place to play. Michael Bradley is quoted as being happy about the playing surface. Altidore was training apart from his teammates which does not bode well for his chances at making the team tomorrow. My guess is Klinsmann will hold him out and hope he will be ready to play on Tuesday in Columbus. Anyway, looking forward to this match tomorrow night. |

Just landed and it is raining hrad with thunder and lightening. The pulse, so far, hs been total optimism from the locals which is par for the course in these encounters. Tickets are being scalped at 2x face value. Tht makes it around $40 for a local to get a ducat. A bit steep for Central America, but the usual at home. |

The heavy rain obviously God's revenge for the snow game in Denver! ![]() Enjoy the match Vince and your time in Costa Rica. I recommend buying a bottle of the Kahlua-like coffee liqueur there (can't remember the name but I liked it even more than Kahlua.) It does sound unlikely that Altidore will play tomorrow. But as we discussed there look to be adequate replacements. My gut says Eddie Johnson will start with the new guy Johannsson available off the bench. I do not see Klinsmann giving the still green Johannsson the start in Costa Rica. |

Judging by media reports, here's what I think we'll see: -------------------Howard----------------- Cameron----Omar----Besler--------DMB --------------Bradley---Jones------------ --Zusi------------Donovan-------Deuce-- ----------------EJ-------------------------- Subs: Orozco, Bedoya & Johannsson. LOVE the team's confidence & attitude...though, I'd be ESTASTIC with a point! |

That looks like a reasonable expectation of the lineup, though I'd imagine Demspey will play centrally behind EJ. Zusi and Donovan can flip-flop left and right. |

Had the same idea, shelsoccer...but think Donovan might be a bit more effective in the middle. Either way should work in our favor, though. |

Just got back from libations. Reporting several hundred Tico supporters outside the hotel with airhorns and chanting. Thy are a good 400 meters rom the entrance and I can barely hear them in my room. Doubt they are audible to the team. A good amount of police presence to keep them off the hotel premises. |

For those who do not know much about the US' new forward, here is an article on Aron Johannsson. I particularly liked these remarks from Klinsmann on him, "He's a different type of striker, a different type of player," Klinsmann said of Jóhannsson here on Thursday. "He takes people on, he's very light on his feet, and he has speed. But he always knows where the goal is, even if he's just roaming around with his back to the goal ... We knew that once we get him step-by-step here and give him some time to adjust, he will give us a different element. This is really nice to see. He's very focused. He knows what he wants. He wants to go to the World Cup." I like the idea of having a forward not afraid to take defenders on. That is something Charlie Davies once provided the team. |

If folks have access to ESPN3 (an online streaming site, but it's only available if one's ISP has an agreement with ESPN) they will provide plenty of coverage of the upcoming WCQs with a number of individual matches available plus a studio show. “...FIFA World Cup Whiparound – Quest to Qualify” from 2-5 p.m. ET on each of the two September 2013 FIFA match dates. The three-hour program will take fans through several live look-ins to on-the-field action, and offer highlights of key moments in the games (goals, controversial referee decisions, et al) from the topline FIFA World Cup qualifiers in Europe. Adrian Healey and Taylor Twellman will host on Friday." Today's ESPN match streams (and TV broadcasts) all times are EDT: 10:30 a.m. Russia vs. Luxembourg ESPN3 12 noon Czech Republic vs. Armenia ESPN Deportes / WatchESPN / ESPN3 2 p.m. Malta vs. Denmark ESPN3 2 p.m. Macedonia vs. Wales ESPN3 2 p.m. Turkey vs. Andorra ESPN3 2 p.m. Romania vs. Hungary ESPN3 2:10 p.m. Latvia vs. Lithuania ESPN3 2:15 p.m. Bosnia-Herzegovina vs. Slovakia ESPN3 2:15 p.m. Georgia vs. France ESPN3 2:30 p.m. Slovenia vs. Albania ESPN3 2:30 p.m. Estonia vs. Netherlands ESPN3 2:30 p.m. Finland vs. Spain ESPN Deportes / WatchESPN / ESPN3 2:30 p.m. Switzerland vs. Iceland ESPN3 2:45 p.m. Serbia vs. Croatia ESPN3 2:45 p.m. Germany vs. Austria ESPN3 2:45 p.m. Liechtenstein vs. Greece ESPN3 2:45 p.m. Poland vs. Montenegro ESPN3 2:45 p.m. Northern Ireland vs. Portugal ESPN3 3 p.m. Scotland vs. Belgium ESPN3 9:30 p.m. Mexico vs. Honduras ESPNEWS / WatchESPN |

Sounds like you are at the team hotel, Vince. No trouble getting a room reservation there then? |

ESPN3 is great as I can see most of these games through the ESPN app on the Xbox. But the last game stands out to me... Its the Mex/Hon game in Mexico or Hon? If it is Mexico, fine, I have no question...but if it is in Honduras, how does ESPN have the rights to show a Mexican away game on their station but not a US game? And if it is a Mexican home game, shouldn't it be on a full ESPN channel? |
