10PM EST kick-off on beIN. A win here and we can probably exhale. CR needs the points. We have never won in Saprissa. |

Steve Goff of the Washington Post with a good review of how the roster currently stands and Goff makes his predictions for the Costa Rica and Mexico match rosters. A pretty good summary of where various players stand in the national team hierarchy. |

Great points by Goff...while it might require a very different starting XI from Mexico, I feel it might be very important to keep the yellow-carded players safe & not play them. I realize there are some critical players & I'm not saying we shouldn't "play to win" but, like Goff said, the CR match is "not as important" as Mexico and, when you take the CONCACAF refs & the fact that we never get calls in Central America, I feel the possibility of our top players picking up a second yellow & getting suspended for the Mexico match is too great & not worth the risk. With that in mind, I'd go with: -------------------------Guzan------------------- Parkhurst-----Gonzalez-----Goodson--Castillo --Corona---Beckerman---Diskerud--Bedoya-- --------------Donovan--------EJ----------------- Subs: Torres, Kljestan & Johannsson I truly think this lineup could get us a point...which would be like three points. |

Aahhh, but if you play for a point, you most often get beat 0-1 in the end, AF.... Counterpoint: Go into Sampirssa with all guns firing, damn the historical trends, and aim to take three points from them. Then you may get only 1, but you are not likely to get beat. With the better depth than ever that the US enjoys, and anticipating you only lose 1 or 2 players to a second yellow, you still are in good shape for Mexico, and you haven't let off the accelerator by showing a less than full effort vs. CR. Why not use our new found depth to try to win both games? Trust me, the team will be a lot more enthusiastic about an all out effort to win than a cagey 'let's hold out some of our best horses and go for a point, and then really play to win vs. Mexico' approach. |

Understand your points, Johnbuildr...just hope we don't end up regretting "going all out" & losing key players for Mexico. We know how CONCACAF refs are, especially in Central America <_< |

Well, it's certainly a gamble either way, but sometimes I think we can get too clever for our own good. In the end, there may be some semblance of both approaches by JK, depending on which key players really need some rest or slight injury recovery from club play and so on. In either case, with that many people carrying a yellow(can't leave them all home), we can expect to have more than one second yellow in CR. Let's just hope it is only one or two. |

Per Grant Wahl, Change-up coming from Jurgen Klinsmann. Usually announces new USMNT squad after weekend's games. Now doing it at 3:30 pm ET today on ESPN. As for how to approach the Costa Rica game, I take John's perspective, go with your best squad possible there. I do believe the game will be played at the new National Stadium there and not at the intimidating Saprissa Stadium. |

Here's the roster: http://www.ussoccer.com/teams/us-men/lates...ining-camp.aspx I liked what liittle I saw of Johansson, but he is a bit of a surprise call up is he not? Was thinking Gomez might still be ahead of him for now, but JK has put a ton of wieght on club performances. No Parkhurst or Goodson. No Corona or Kljestan(thank goodness) Diskerud is in in spite of being only listed as a "possible" by Goff. Thought Goff was off base on that myself. Looks like a great roster! |

I like JK's attitude about going for the win in CR. Nothing to this point would have said he would want to back down and playing it safe would be contradictory to the message he has been, successfully, trying to get across to the team. As for Johansson, I'll go ahead and predict that we will not see him in CR but will towards the end of the Mexico game. Just a guess... |

Johnbuildr, Herc Gomez is still recovering from an injury & hasn't played for this new club in Mexico, so it's no surprise that he wasn't called up. More interesting is the omission of Joe Corona & Jose Torres...thought both did very well in the Gold Cup and, while I really like Bedoya, like Corona & Torres a bit more. Surprised that Goodson wasn't called in but, other than that & Corona/Torres...it's pretty much the roster I expected. Like you, Johnbuildr, very happy that Kljestan wasn't included...just never been a fan of his, kind of like Brek Shea. Actually, alabastergremlin, I do believe we'll see Johannsson in the CR match...as well as, the Mexico game, especially given the yellow card situation. Have to admit that I LOVE JK's attitude in "going for the win", despite the yellow cards & my previous thoughts...just hope we don't get "screwed" by the refs <_< ---------------------Howard-------------------- Evans-------Omar---------Besler----Beasley --------------Jones--------Bradley------------ --Donovan--------Dempsey------F. Johnson -------------------Jozy------------------------- Subs: If ahead or tied late: Orozco, Brooks & Beckerman. If behind: Diskerud, Zusi & EJ. |

For the record this is the list of callus: Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake) Defenders: DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City) John Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Michael Orozco (Puebla) Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Michael Bradley (AS Roma), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City) Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Sunderland), Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders I guess it is clear Parkhurst is behind Evans and possibly Cameron in Klinsmann's eyes at right back. Other than Cherundolo and Gomez the rest of the roster choices are healthy so I think this gives us a pretty good eye on who Klinsmann thinks is his best 23 right now (minus the injured Cherundolo and Gomez who have both been out of action for multiple months now.) Telling that each of the newcomers, Brooks and Johannsson have made it, shows how highly Klinsmann values them both. |

Get the points where you can! Last time we played in Saprissa (2009), Freddy Adu saw the pitch. We got shellacked 1-3 and only avoided a shutout when Donovan notched a PK in the 90th minute. We were down by two goals, I think, by the 20th minute. Saprissa is a dump, but it works for the Ticos. I think the Chinese government actually built another stadium for Costa Rica, but the atmosphere is not to the liking of the CR Federation, so they continue to slog out games in the Old Faithful. Maybe I will look into flights.....I got the bug. |

Vince, Costa Rica have been playing all of their qualifiers at the new Chinese built National Stadium, complete with a track surrounding the field, and not at the imposing Saprissa Stadium. That has to benefit the US heading into this difficult away game. Interesting that John Brooks got the call instead of Goodson in central defense. Also note Michael Orozco also was selected for these two matches, perhaps because of his familiarity with facing the style of play Costa Rica & Mexico use? Aron Johannsson is off to a good start to the season with AZ. I think we will see him if an offensive spark is needed off the bench. |

Klinsmann told the press that he sees Beasley as his team's left back and Fabian Johnson playing, at least for now, as the left wing. So I am thinking that means Landon Donovan likely is competing with Grahame Zusi for the starting job at right wing and you have to think, despite Zusi's contributions, that Donovan will start there next Friday against the Ticos. |

Thanks, Yogi. I was in error (as usual). Bad news for the next pair of matches. Interesting he is still coming to camp. Is this only for Mexico, perhaps? http://sports.yahoo.com/news/usmnt-injury-...17324--mls.html |
