http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/ne...anthony-brooks/ Dempsey is out but EJ, Brad Evans & JAB are in the roster. Not really surprised, though I would've liked to see Dempsey included...guess JK thought it might be best to let Deuce acclimate himself to Seattle. Still, wonder what JK thinks of Dempsey's move to MLS? |

Thanks for the link, af10. Goes to show the call ups have been made and are starting to leak out. If anyone can think of one decent reason they don't just go ahead and announce the roster at this late date, please clue us in. I "get" that it's JK's decision and m.o., but what is behind it? I hope we get to see this big kid, John Brooks. Wonder if JK will play him on his first call up? As far as what JK thinks of Dempsey's move, as hobbes or Yogi said, it really doesn't matter. He can't not play him in his current form, so JK can be disappointed, but that is about as far as it can go. |

I am with Rufus on this John, except for tournaments like the Gold Cup where he is required to release a roster beforehand, Klinsmann has kept his US rosters for both friendlies and World Cup qualifiers, a closely guarded secret until a day or two before the players report for training. Not sure why he does that, especially for friendlies when roster secrecy is not really required but it is one area where the media and public friendly Klinsmann is very guarded. I do not know much about John Anthony Brooks but am curious to see what he may provide the team. At the least he will get a feel for how Klinsmann's US national team operates. And keep an eye out for Brooks' matches with Hertha Berlin on GolTV this season. |

http://www.soccerbyives.net/2013/08/should...n-friendly.html Can definitely see a Besler-Goodson combo at CB but not sure how Altidore & EJ would interact together. SUCKS that Fabian Johnson might be injured & unavailable and not crazy about the GAP in the midfield of a 4-4-2 formation...would allow TOO MUCH space for Bosnia's MFs imo! On the upside, the full-team lineup for Sept's WCQ looks really good IMO! |

Ok, roster has been released: GOALKEEPERS (3): Cody Cropper (Southampton), Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tim Howard (Everton) DEFENDERS (7): John Anthony Brooks (Hertha Berlin), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders FC), Michael Orozco Fiscal (Puebla), Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg), Tim Ream (Bolton Wanderers) MIDFIELDERS (8): Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes), Michael Bradley (Roma), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Danny Williams (Reading) FORWARDS (5): Jozy Altidore (Sunderland), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders FC), Aron Johannsson (AZ Alkmaar), Bobby Wood (1860 Munich) No Goodson or Beasley? Not crazy about Castillo or Kljestan! Not surprised that Omar is not included. I know it's just a friendly but wish we had Dempsey & Landon! IMO Chandler is done with the USMNT...good riddance  ---------------------Howard------------------- Cameron----Orozco-----Brooks--F. Johnson --------------Jones-------Bradley------------- --Corona-----------Diskerud-------------EJ-- ----------------Altidore------------------------ Subs: Evans, Parkhurst, Williams, Bedoya, Boyd & Johannsson! |

Some surprises there, first off it is as we expected a mainly European based team, only Seattle's E. Johnson and Evans, Tijuana's Castillo and Corona and Puebla's Orozco were included as non European based players. Probably Klinsmann's concession to MLS and Mexican clubs who released players for the Gold Cup. Newcomers Brooks and Johansson, who each expressed their desire to play for the US were brought in but remember this game will not cap tie either one but does show where their heart lies internationally. Cropper of the U20 team was brought in as a 3rd string goalie, wise move give him a little exposure to the team's training while there was no need to fly a 3rd string goalie from the US just to sit and watch. Wood who briefly played for the U23 team a year ago gets an opportunity here and there are recalls for both Kljestan and Ream (remember him,2 years or so ago supposedly the next US defensive star?) This may be the last real opportunity for both Kljestan and Ream to make an impression with the Gold Cup players pushing for places. af10 I think both Chandler and Cherundolo are both still hurt which is why they were not selected. |

Klinsmann answering some of the questions raised here about the roster selections. Sounds from the interview that Johansson is not yet cleared by FIFA to make the switch from Iceland to the US, if so then he was just brought in to train with the team. Klinsmann's thoughts on Dempsey's move to Seattle and why most MLS/Mexico based players were left off this roster,
In other words, much as we already anticipated! ![]() af10, my thoughts are that Cameron will play in central defense in this game. I think JK wants to see him there, especially with midfield pretty crowded on this roster. I think Orozco will start alongside him and at some point both Ream and possibly Brooks may be brought in off the bench. Without Donovan and Dempsey I think Fabian Johnson will start at left midfield to give the team more oomph in attack. |

Michael Orozco injured his hamstring over the weekend playing with Puebla and will have to pull out of this squad. No replacement will be named so the US will enter this game pretty light in central defense. I think that assures Cameron will start there likely with Ream and the young Brooks will probably come off the bench. Reading the Klinsmann interview which Tony linked, it does seem Johansson's clearance has not yet arrived so he is there only for practice. That is all right, at least he is being considered. Another chance for Klinsmann to try and get a lot out of a depleted roster. I am curious to see what he can do. Anybody know what is up with Maurice Edu? I see his loan in Turkey has ended and he is back with Stoke. I hope he gets playing time there as I think he is a pretty good ball winning midfielder and could pair well with Bradley as long as Edu remains back and lets Bradley venture forward. |

Thanks for jogging my memory about Edu. I have no idea what's up other than to speculate that JK wants to let him re-establish at Stoke. |

I like our midfielders & forwards but our defense SCARES me, especially with Orozco not available. I like Cameron but not thrilled with Castillo, Ream or Parkhurst and looks like we'll definitely going to see them play. I know about Cherundolo's injury issues but haven't heard anything about Beasley or Goodson! Guessing that they must be injured...otherwise, why not call them in, especially Beasley, since the Mexico guys were called in? Yogi, I have heard lots of stuff about Chandler always being injured when called by JK & then, mysteriously, recovering in time to play for his German team. Word is that the German federation has no plans for Chandler & consider him an American but, unless he commits 120% to the USMNT, I really have no wish to see him wear the Stars & Stripes! Excited to see Brooks play but believe we might be facing a barrage at our end, because of our defense...hope I'm wrong!! |

Have nothing of value to add other than if our midfield doesn't have a very strong game in front of this back line, it could be a verrry long game.

In the end, it's a ticky tacky matter, but Yogi sorta forced my hand on this roster naming issue. As I wrote earlier, I am aware that JK historically releases his rosters way later than any logical case can be made for doing so, but Klinsmann has released rosters more than a day or 2 before friendlies. Just looking back over the last year or so, he released a roster May 16th for May 29th and June 2nd friendlies. He released a roster January 6th for a January 29th match. But then the August 15th match at Azteca last year was not released until August 12th. A May 26th game last year was released on May 21st, 5 days early. Let's just agree that a last minute release of roster by JK may not be surprising, but it is not always the way he does it. And my original point was more that when the clubs must know at least a week ahead of time, why not just make it public then too, what difference does it make? |

FIFA have cleared former Iceland U21 player Aron Johansson's switch to the US so he will be eligible to play tomorrow and now can no longer make any additional switches so he is a US player. af10, Chandler played in a World Cup qualifying game last spring so he is a US international from now on. No more changes for him either. |

A couple of articles from si.com worth reading: A preview of the Bosnia match and, A look at the roster In the first article is this tidbit pertaining to Chandler, Klinsmann told ASN that Timmy Chandler wasn't invited to Bosnia "because other players are ahead of him in the ranking of the team at the moment." Geoff Cameron probably is more valuable in the middle, leaving Michael Parkhurst as Evans' top competition for minutes. A strong performance on Wednesday would give Evans the inside track on a starting spot in September. If true that is an interesting and I think somewhat baffling position to take as in my opinion Chandler is a better right back than either Evans or Parkhurst. But the 2nd article also makes a good point about why four players were called in to cross the Atlantic for this match, Among those players likely to be under Klinsmann's microscope are forward Eddie Johnson and jack-of-all-trades Brad Evans -- both of the Seattle Sounders -- and Club Tijuana's Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo. They're the only members of the roster announced Monday who've been asked to leave their clubs and fly across an ocean. Surely there's a reason. Their roles in September's World Cup qualifiers, or perhaps their long-term future on a team that almost certainly will head to Brazil next summer, may be influenced by their performance Wednesday's friendly. |

Good links with far more USMNT info than we have gotten anywhere else lately Martin. Thanks.
Indeed. Who thought either of them were or should be ahead of Chandler? Not me. Sounds like we will only get to see the two new defectors ( ) if the game is well in hand, a small likelihood.... |
