Careful, Vince--there must already be conspiracy theories out there, after El Tri's twin defeats. This matchup revives memories of a previous US-Panama final in Giants Stadium, where I watched our boys fail to break down the canaleros for 120 minutes. Penalties again on Sunday? Hope not. |

Klinsmann or no Klinsmann, can't see this USMNT being denied from achieving their 5th Gold Cup title...yes, I wish we got Mexico (vengeance for last 2 GC finals) but Panama earned their spot in the final. The crowd might not be as intense or full as it would've been v Mexico but I do suspect it will be more of a pro-USA crowd ---------------------Rimando------------------- Parkhurst-----Omar--------Besler--------DMB ------------Beckerman------Holden----------- --Corona---------------LD-------------Torres-- -------------------EJ (Demolition Man)--------- Subs: Goodson, Diskerud & Wondo. Not many changes from the lineup v Honduras but this is the best XI, based on previous performances IMO. My pick is USA 3-0, goals by Donovan, Holden & Demolition Man...with Donovan taking MVP honors...but wouldn't be worried if the USA falls behind. This team has handled adversity too well & don't see them rattled by an early deficit, though don't see that being an issue. Just hope Panama comes "to play" and not to do "endless fouling"

It's official. Klinsmann will need to watch this one from the stands. I thought the wizards of the CONCACAF would "modify" the rules to accommodate Heir Klinsmann, but no go on the appeal. This should be an overwhelming home match for us. A win is expected based on that fact and our current form. I tinkered with the idea of going, but I fizzled out after the Dallas match and a few night shifts. The couch and the Big Screen will have to do. Anyway Gonzalez doesn't play? It would be fairly painful for LA Galaxy to have him called up for the Nats only to sit while he misses games for his club. Gordon has not seen the pitch yet, either. |

Yes it is kinda surprising neither Gonzalez or Gordon have played a minute since they were each called in for the knockout rounds. While we all would believe Gonzalez-Besler is the US' top central defensive partnership now, Goodson frankly ahs played pretty well and it would be a tough blow for him to lose his place in his final after playing so well throughout the tournament. But against Blas Perez I would not be surprised by Klinsmann opting for Gonzalez. Perez and Torres in Panama's attack will be a handful to defend but the US should win this game and cap what has been a very entertaining Gold Cup for Klinsmann's team. |

Final Score: USA 1 Panama 0 Fairly dominating although the score did not indicate it. Both teams were sparse on shots on target. I don't think Rimando was even tested. Donovan, of course, was strong. Holden went down with a knee injury early and Mix filled in well. I suspect Holden's injury is not going to be good. The announcers kept mentioning "knee on knee" contact, but it was his other leg that was hurt. The guy can't catch a break and if he isn't getting real playing time with his club, I doubt he is in Brazil. Shea got the tap-in winner off a flub by Donovan after a nice cross from Bedoya around 64'. Goodson and Besler were solid. Beasley was very good and Beckerman really plugged the defensive mid. I thought Panama did not help itself by being so content for so long in a defensive shell. Their true strength is running at people and creating confusion. Regardless, they had a memorable tournament. They have their work cut out for them to make the WC14, but I could see them pushing Honduras and Costa Rica. |

It was not a pretty game but certainly a deserved win for the US. As Vince wrote Panama were pretty defensive but give them credit they were very disciplined defensively and did their job pretty well. Strange though as when they went at the US they did look like they could cause some problems. But they simply did not do that enough. Tough luck for Holden and we can only hope it is not a serious injury. Diskerud I thought did well coming on for him and in my eyes Diskerud and Beckerman were the US' best players today. Yet it was Shea coming on which turned the game into the US' favor as playing as a winger enabled Johnson to stay more central rather than look for the ball on the wings. Panama pretty much took Donovan out of the game yet he still played a role in the goal. Overall a very successful Gold Cup, the US wins it's 5th of 12 played, second only to Mexico's 6 and the US are now on an 11 match winning streak since that late May defeat to Belgium. Time to take a several week break, let the players go back to their clubs and then let's see how many of these Gold Cup winners make their way onto the team to play Bosnia in mid-August. |

I guess we can say this was a typical final with both teams looking a little tense but the US finally won it by getting better off the ball movement, which is how Donovan freed himself for the goal. That would have been his goal but Shea made sure but touching it over the line. I first thought he could have been offside but thankfully was not as he was behind the ball when Donovan touched it goalward. Credit Panama for keeping it close, they are certainly not an easy team to beat but if they showed more inclination to attack they could have had more success in this game. And despite Mexico not being there, Soldier Field looked pretty full, a good showing by the fans in Chicago! 11 straight wins, a Gold Cup title, a comfortable position in World Cup qualifying, increased depth which has been developed, I would say it has been a successful summer for the US national team! |

I don't think Donovan touched the ball on the goal, and he seemed to indicate that in the post-game interview. It was a typical, tight, but not really tense final, and the US was clearly the superior team. I agree that Beckerman and Diskerud were the US standouts. As for our Gold Cup performance overall, I find myself in kind of an unusual position. I would have been far more disappointed had we lost than I am excited about winning the cup. I say that because (a) everyone, at least the "important" teams, brought their B units and (B) it was evident from the group stage that the US B team was better than anyone elses. I did get satisfaction from the performance of several of the B teamers. A number at least entered the discussion for Brazil. |

It wasn't "pretty" but a gritty performance & great goal by Shea, though some missed opportunities...namely, EJ's late in the second half! TOUGH break for Holden...really hope it's not as bad as feared. WAY TO GO, USMNT, on our 5th Gold Cup trophy & Landon Donovan on a spectacular tournament
