According to Steven Goff at the Washington Post it will be US-El Salvador at 4 pm ET on Fox/Univision and Honduras-Costa Rica (the best quarterfinal matchup) at 7 pm ET on Fox Soccer/Univision. |

Apparently, it is a sell-out! Wow. The presence of El Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica in the doubleheader have helped. So will Klinsmann start Besler, Gonzalez and Johnson? You'd think so otherwise why call them in? |

Apparently Omar Gonzalez remained with the Galaxy and will report, if the US advances, for the semifinals. Here is the US' lineup to play El Salvador: Rimando; Parkhurst, Besler, Goodson, Beasley; Beckerman, Diskerud; Torres, Donovan, Corona; Wondolowski. |

5-1 for the US, an impressive win with the US showing some ruthlessness. I liked the opening goal off a set play on a corner which Goodson finished. Corona got the 2nd, then ES got back into the game as Beasley fouled Zelaya and he converted the PK with a Panenka. The US probably could hae had several more but it ended 2-1 at the half. In the 2nd half El Salvador added another attacker and pushed the US some but Klinsmann sent Eddie Johnson on for Wondolowski and seconds later Johnson, with his new gold dye job headed the ball into the net. That goal killed El Salvador's spirt and the US got a 4th as a Rimando kick was flicked on by Johnson to Donovan who outran his man and made it 4-1. Diskerud then scored a 5th. A nice game from the US against outmanned opponents. The USmoved the ball well and like I said were ruthless in attack. I thought all played well but Donovan, Johnson, Corona and Beasley really stood out for me. And when needed Rimando made a couple of nice saves. Wednesday are the semifinals, does Johnson start now for Wondolowski? I'm thinking yes. |

Regardless of the tourney and A team, B team, C team discussion today was a fantastic game which was really never even close minus the middle 20-25 minutes or so. It was nice to see a US team handle and dismantle an inferior opponent the way they did today. Just as Johnson came in I was telling a friend that he better come ready to play if he is going to sport the dye job...wonder if he heard me!?!?! Donovan was masterful. Beasley's major bungle was the penalty which he just got caught flat footed and in no man's land. The best part of the game was the attitude on corner kicks. It was clear as day that the coaches did a great job scouting how El Salvador would play them. And it worked to perfection. That was a pleasure to see. Most of you are better at detailing the game from player to player but overall it was a solid game and the last few months have been a pleasure for a US fan. |

Lot's of "yeah buts" could be raised about this game, as in yeah but that was just El Salvador, yeah but that was the US' B team, etc. But what cannot be ignored is the attitude the US is playing with, an attacking disposition with, as Yogi wrote, some ruthlessness in the US' play. That is very good to see after years watching the US just doing enough to win. I liked how Klinsmann had the team running some set plays from corners ad the addition of Johnson into the game really brought the US' play up a level. And I think you guys can end your discussion of whether Klinsmann will ignore Donovan in the future. The player is not giving him that option with his play. |

Impressive play. But I will still issue the caveat that it was El Salvador, a team which never matches up well against the US. I was not surprised by the margin of victory. Having said that I liked the way the US played for the most part but was worried a bit at some vulnerability on defense when Zelaya ran at the US backline. But I think teaming Besler and Gonzalez will make the defense much more cohesive. As for Wondolowski or Johnson starting versus Honduras, I'd go wth Wondolowski and use Johnson just a she was in this game, to run at a tiring defense and provide a completely different look to the US attack. Joe Corona by the way is looking pretty good at attacking midfielder. I think he is earning a spot on the full team as Clint Dempsey's understudy. |

I must also say I got a kick of his attempt to wear the sunglasses thrown at him from fans. One other comment on the broadcast, I can't decide if I liked Wynalda calling the game. In some ways I liked it but for the same reasons I didn't. I really felt like the same commentary would have come from him had we all been sitting at a bar having drinks. He didn't say anything that was unprofessional but it wasn't your typical announcer. I didn't think so at least. He also didn't shy away from being a US fan. |

No doubt Donovan has found his mojo again. He has been good throughout the tournament but was especially good against El Salvador. The US always does well versus the Salvadorans so no surprise at the ease of the win but it was how the US played that is so encouraging. The team go forward so very well. It is not just Donovan but Beasley and Parkhurst provide good options overlapping, Corona is becoming a force at attacking midfield, Diskerud is busy in midfield providing his Michael Bradley with hair impersonation, Wondolowski may not be scoring lately but he creates space well with his running and now Eddie Johnson has been added to the team and gives the team evenmore options. There is just a lot to like right now about this US B team. I am thinking there are enough players here making a case for themselves that this may no longer be considered a B team! gremlin, I liked how Gus Johnson and Eric Wynalda called the game and the studio team did fine too (plus I will never complain about the chance to look at Heather Mitts legs! ]

Hard to argue with the results. Like Tony my one concern was how much trouble the US defense had dealing with Zelaya. Goodson in particular is vulnerable against just such a player. My guess is Gonzalez-Besler, the first choice centerbacks return to play Honduras. But overall this Gold Cup is giving Klinsmann more options with the full team, and nobody will complain about that. |

Pretty solid 90 minute effort by the USMNT, lots of attacking soccer (Parkhurst seemed to get forward as much as Beasley) even in the last 30 minutes with a multi-goal lead. El Salvador deserves credit for playing attacking soccer after falling behind and made the game interesting with their offensive subs to start the 2nd half. But after Wesley Snipes (I thought he subbed on from Blade but apparently it was from Demolition Man) came on and scored on the platinum blonde corner kick header set play the Salvadorans were probably more vulnerable than they wished on defense. I think I remember a WC qualifier from Foxboro a cycle or two ago where the Salvadorans wasted about 10 minutes rolling around on the ground (Conor Casey was spotted in the vicinity) trying to protect a scoreless tie. In the 1st half. Much more entertaining and enjoyable game yesterday. After watching the recent stretch of games in this winning streak I feel like I have a much better feel for Klinsmann's player pool as we've watched high level friendlies, qualifiers and now the Gold Cup with a wide variety of players. Honduras should be a tougher opponent Wednesday (glad to see DC United academy product Najar score the gamewinner) but we should still be significant favorites and the Cup organizer$ must be pleased that a Mexico-US showdown in Chicago next weekend seems likely. |

It's interesting to hear you guys praise the U.S. ruthlessness because I was concerned about the opposite. I was pretty unimpressed with the U.S. yesterday. They started all right and controlled the early stages, but until they scored off of that nice set piece play, I thought ES was holding their own. The U.S. then took control, but for 15 minutes in the second half they gave it right back. A better team than ES would have tied that game or worse. Zelaya is a good player, but he's hardly a world beater. I thought Besler wasn't bad, otherwise I thought the U.S. back line was pretty unimpressive on the day. It was a great sub and a nice goal by Johnson. Donovan was very sharp, but the two goals in garbage time to pad the stats made less of an impression on me as the really average spell to start the second half that gave life to ES and woke up 40,000 opposing fans. The march to the inevitable U.S.-Mexico final continues, but I think the U.S. needs to sharpen up a little. Also Heather Mitts? She literally just recaps what happens in a match when asked almost any question. It's kind of amazing. And after Cobi Jones praised Honduras for completely shutting down Costa Rica and not giving them any chances I stared in disbelief before changing the channel. All told I like the Fox presentation. It looks good. The pre and post-games are really long (probably too long, but I like that they exist). There's a great platform there, I just hope they're able to find better people... cheers, hobbes |
