Expecting a sold-out, raucous JELD-WEN field in Portland...despite the opponent Based on what we saw v Guatemala, here's what I hope our starting XI will be: ------------------------Rimando---------------- Beltran-------Goodson-------Gooch------DMB --------------Holden-----------Diskerud------- --Corona----------------LD-----------Torres-- ---------------------Herc----------------------- Subs: Parkhurst, Beckerman & Shea ANYTHING less than a 4-5 goal victory would be disappointing...just sayin'

As bad as the Belize game should be, Canada’s two matches against Belize were two of my most enjoyable as a supporter: First this happened: ![]() We snuck in a dozens of beer from the parking lot. A male supporter squatted in the women’s dorms at Queen’s (where the stadium was, which is also probably our most prestigious university) for nearly a week and didn’t get caught. It was the first appearance of the lucky cucumber. Jonathan DeGuzman popped by the tailgate after he was serenaded in the parking lot. Campus police came to shut down the tailgate two hours after it ended (when all of the tailgaters were drinking bottles of beer inside the stadium). One of the Canadian supporters was asked to trade jerseys by a Belize player and the supporter said no. One of the Belize players apparently was arrested for soliciting prostitution between match 1 and match 2. I would say allegedly, but the looks on the Belize player’s faces when we sang about it were priceless and a bit of a tell. All in, Belize are so bad (la la la la la), but those games were a lot of fun. cheers, hobbes |

Keep coming up with stories like that hobbes and you will take away my moniker as the board's raconteur! ![]() With Brek Shea now added to the US roster, I'd expect him to see plenty of playing time in this tournament, Klinsmann needs to justify taking him away from Stoke's preseason after initially telling the club Shea would be in England. I do not know much about Belize's team but I like that there is a new nation making its Gold Cup debut. They are here instead of Guatemala and as we saw on Friday, we are not missing much without Guatemala being present. So good for Belize. |

The US lineup tonight: Rimando; Parkhurst, Orozco-Fiscal, Goodson, Beasley; Beckerman; Corona, Diskerud, Torres; Donovan, Wondolowski. I'm mildly surprised that Gomez and Onyewu are not starting but then again this is Belize. |

I was more than mildly surprised JK played Donovan and Beasley the full 90 as well. Seemed like a silly chance to take, but i guess the boys were having fun so he just let it roll. Would have been the cherry on the top if LD had scored with that backheel shot on goal. 6-1 US, with a first half hat trick by Wondoloski. Donovan and Holden were the class of the field, clearly were ejoying themsleves and playing off one another quite well. |

Basically a training match in front of a crowd (another Pacific Northwest lively one too.) Not too much to really analyze from this game, my one disappointment was in how Parkhurst lost his man as Belize did score from an open header. I am not really sold on Parkhurst as a right back, he does not add much going forward and I do question if he has the quickness to cover the flank well. I know his European clubs have converted him into a right back but I always liked Parkhurst as a central defender and especially admired his ability to play the ball out of the back, a quality which he does not really show as a wing defender. |

Klinsmann said he did not start Onyewu, Gomez and Holden because of their past knee injuries and how they would react to the artificial surface in Portland. Did not prevent him from bringing Holden on in the 2nd half though. No test for Orozco and Goodson in central defense although as raconteur pointed out, Parkhurst sure did fall asleep on one of Belize's rare attacks. Cuba on Saturday should be more of a test. |

I expect Cuba to be more of test, but not much. I think JK again will use this game to experiment. Maybe Shea gets a start and we finally see McInerney off the bench. |

Thoughts...realizing it was Belize: - Holden & Donovan are even more dynamic than I knew they would be! - INEXCUSABLE lack of man-marking on Belize goal  - Belize GK was really good...despite giving up 6 goals! - tackle on Mix Diskerud was a straight red...period  - Rimando was more confident & secure IMO...despite little work - Wondo has become a "poor-man's version" of Jozy Altidore Would've liked to see him subbed at half though, for Jack McInerney!- Possession was better in first half IMO - GREAT crosses that led to goals...by Beckerman, Corona, Torres & Donovan! Predicted a 4-0 USA win, so thought I'd be happier after the win but the Belize goal really pissed me off last night. After watching it on DVR, more respectful of Belize's play & effort but definitely need to work on some issues before Cuba & Costa Rica! |

Even thought I loved this USNMT Gold Cup side, I was rooting for Belize. The David vs Goliath story had me going. Even had a US Coach. First International Tourney for this side to boot. I hope they can at least gain a point. |

I should explain. I'm not in that picture. The guy with the hair and the beer is Marc Bircham. That's a Canadian international drinking a bottle of beer, with the supporters, in the stadium at World Cup qualifier on his way to the team bus after the match. Is it any wonder he drove Holger Osieck totally insane? (there's an amazing story about him buying a python as a team mascot and keeping it in his hotel room during the camp/match they were playing). Some day we will probably be better and more professional, but it will undoubtedly be a little less fun. cheers, hobbes P.S. and in case you were looking really closely, we're pretty sure the guy in the background is DeRo's brother. |
