Looks like we almost forgot this one. It will be on NBC Sports Network with an 11pm EST kick-off according to my TV. Klinsmann indicates his starting XI tonight will most likely be the team he likes to take the field for the Gold Cup. In an interesting move, he named DeMarcus Beasley as the captain. While deserving, it is still a subtle message to some of the other vets called in that they have a bit to prove to become part of the WC rotation of players, IMO. |

It absolutely is telling Beasley and not returning ex US captain Donovan was given the armband for these games. I am not one to place too much emphasis on who is captain but I think the fact that Donovan, a returning former captain was not given the captaincy, does speak volumes that Klinsmann is not gifting anything back to Donovan. |

Given the quality of the opponent, particularly a tiring opponent in the second half, it's tough to have any concrete take-aways from this game. What I think I know is that Donovan made a statement, particularly after moving up top midway through the first half. I was encouraged by Holden's performance. There was enough from Diskerud, Shea, Parkhurst and Gooch to hope for more. Guys like Beasley, Goodson and Gomez played well, but I expect them to make the Brazil roster. What I do know is that Guatemala can be friendly in friendlies. |

Can Donovan be more of a Debbie Downer? His quote regarding the game and his performance...
Can somebody please tell Betty Buzzkill that, while it was a meaningless game, that it was one step to his return to the USMNT that he has led for a decade?!!? That while it can be said that almost all we do is meaningless in the grand scheme of the universe that a star athlete playing for his country should not just blow it off like nothing?!?! And here it was that I thought his quick pregame interview was handled well by him. |

That quote has way too much existential angst for someone who is half-Newfie. But I think it's fantastic. I can just imagine Donovan, on his sabbatical, sitting on a beach somewhere thinking: "I kick an inflated sphere through some posts. And grown men dedicate their lives to stop me from doing that. People are starving to death every day and I make millions to kick a ball. What's the point? Even that sunset is just increased molecules scattering the sun's rays. We're all just molecules and some day we'll all just scatter too." Maybe he really does need some time away from the game because he might have a little too much perspective right now. cheers, hobbes |

Well, evidently in a billion years or something the sun will have frazzled and none of us will be here. Anyway, back to the football! |

My 1st official game as a member of the American Outlaws supporters & it was AWESOME...from the pre-night gathering party, tailgate & post-match celebrating! Lots of cool people & new friends As for the game...after watching my DVR: - Donovan, Holden, Beasley & Diskerud were the best players - Want to see more of Corona & Bedoya before any final comments! - Jury's still out = Gooch, Shea, Parkhurst - Castillo - not USMNT material IMO - Rimando...VERY shaky It took about 40 minutes but FINALLY broke Guatemala's bunker game...no big shock...and loved how we didn't "take the pedal off the gas" for 90 minutes! Yes, it was Guatemala but still a very impressive performance & hope it continues all throught the Gold Cup

haha, this is becoming a very existential discussion! I am more of the "I hit the ball first time and there it was in the back of the net" type of analysis! ![]() Anyway on to the game, an extremely easy win against a disjointed Guatemala. But some positive things to take from this game, notably Donovan and Holden both looking like they are on the way back to becoming contributors, Beasley continues to grow as a left back, Diskerud looked pretty dynamic in central midfield and teamed up pretty well with Holden. And I thought Torres did a pretty good job of distributing the ball in central midfield. The one player whose play disappointed me was Corona who I did not think did all that well as an attacking midfielder. But for he, like all the US players on this team, the real tests are ahead. For a first official match for this group it was not bad. Oh one other complaint, other than Diskerud this was not a young team, most of these players are already veterans. Shouldn't the team be lookingat some younger options to develop for 2014 and beyond? |

I agree with Sammy's assessment of the players. I was very encouraged to see Holden look so comfortable in midfield and Diskerud looked very promising, like a younger version of Michael Bradley. But Sammy is right, a real assessment of these players will not come until we see them against better opposition, looks like we will have to wait to the 3rd group match against Costa Rica for that. And again Sammy is right to point out the lack of youth on this team. Usually you would expect a B team to be composed primarily of younger players looking to break into the first team but this team is full of veterans, only Diskerud and Corona are youngish players. |

I was most pleased to see Holden and Diskerud each come in and do well. I think their insertion into the lineup sped up the US' play and made it harder for Guatemala to defend than when Beckerman and Torres were playing midfield. Not that the latter two played poorly, they did all right, Torres even set up the opening goal, but Holden and Diskerud added a faster rhythm of play to the US and certainly against most of the competition in the Gold Cup that will make the Us tougher to defend. |

Sammy and Yogi are right, I too am disappointed with the lack of youth on this US so-called B team. Some of these players are not ever going to be ready for the highest level so why not bring in a few younger players for a chance? At the start of the Martinique/Canada game they listed the average ages of the younger 5 teams teams in the GC and the US was off the chart. No wonder.
