I have seen CONCACAF say that before, IIRC 4 years ago there was similar talk of a "playoff" to determine the Confed Cup representative but we saw how that played out. John though makes a good point, they need to do something to convince fans there is some meaning to this B team Gold Cup. |

http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/goldcup...la-torre-070113 Terrific article...and confirms why I'm soooo PSYCHED for this Gold Cup version! I still remember the SICK feeling I had after 2009 & 2011...and DON'T want to experience that again this summer  No, both countries won't be bringing their "A" teams...for obvious reasons...but you can't tell me that this is a meaningless tournament!! CAN'T WAIT until July 7th & hope the soccer is solid

Can't say I share your enthusiasm americafutbol10. B teams just do not excite me, especially after the Confederations Cup, the Euro U21 and now U20 World Cup already played this summer. I'll probably tune in at the latter stages to see how the teams look but right now this tourney just does not excite me. I am curious to see the attendance figures though. |

I'm in your camp, Rufus, though I'm sure I'll watch early round US games just to see what the B-teamers have to offer. Given the quality of teams the US, Mexico and others are sending, this just will be a series of glorified friendlies in the guise of a "meaningful" tournament. But, if it gets you excited AF10, go for it. It's always nice to bring home hardware. If the US wins, it'll go in the record books and, 10 years from now, no one will remember the (non)quality of the rosters. |

Rufus, you downer you!! Bummer. Oh, I understand the situation, but isn't this a great chance to see a lot deeper into the US MNT pool and try to pick out some up and comers to the international scene? You can't do that by watching club level soccer nearly as well, you have to see the players in these kinds of competitions to begin to sense if they are ready to move up to the full national team. Well, in any case, there ain't so much soccer going on this summer to watch that I will miss any of the GOLD Cup games that I have a chance to watch, so count me IN af10!!!!

I do understand the indifference toward the Gold Cup because of the quality of the rosters but with everything that's on the line for the winner...a playoff against the 2015 winner for a spot in the 2017 Confederations Cup...and JK stating how important the tournament is & how much he wants to win it, I find myself very excited for it! My question is what happens if, say, the USMNT wins this year & in 2015? My best guess is that we would play whoever finished second in the tournament, in that playoff...most likely, Mexico! Glad you're on board, John!

I am with AF10. I am psyched for this tourney. This has been a fun summer for futtie and I hope the Gold Cup holds form. Anytime a player throws on a National team jersey, it means alot. The mix on this team will surely provide alot of pride. |

JK will probably end up taking, at most, two players off this B team (discounting players like Beasley, who are really A teamers), and it will be interesting to see who might step up. The catch is JK is going to have a tough time determining who those two players might be given they'll be playing against inferior competition. Can you really tell if a player like McInerney is ready for the next level on his performance in this tournament? Will the competition really be any better than what McInerney sees week in and week out in MLS? |

I was thinking that there would be no playoff. If the same team won both tournaments and STILL had to play a playoff game then it goes back to making them a little less meaningful. I don't get the channels the Gold Cup will be on so I doubt I'll see any games (if they are all Fox Soccer games). But I do love the way JK is handling Donovan's situation. He has flat out treated him like just another player BUT I think we all know that JK knows he isn't "just" another player. I think, in the back of his mind, JK fully expects Donovan will step up. On a side note, regarding the coverage, I really enjoyed NBC Sports coverage of the game tonight. It is interesting to see that three separate stations are all showing USMNT games in a months span (ESPN, NBCSp, and Fox). I guess it isn't unusual to have two but it seems unique for three. But aren't we in a bit of a transition stage from where ESPN lost most of the rights to broadcasting the sport...isn't NBCSports going to be showing the EPL (and major coverage at that)? It is a good thing when multiple entities compete with each other for these events...it only means a better product for us! |

As alabastergremlin mentioned, if the same team wins the Gold Cup in 2013 & 2015, there will be NO playoff & the CONCACAF representative for 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia would be the two-time winner...that comes, directly, from CONCACAF & makes sense. Hopefully, we can win it this year & put ALL the pressure on Mexico for 2015...though, I would love to beat them, both times

Gremlin, the Gold Cup games will also be on in Spanish on a combination of Univision or one of their other channels, Unimas (the former Telefutura) or Univision Deportes, a channel mainly available on satellite and which by the way is great, they show so many different leagues and tournaments, including the current U20 World Cup. |

NBC's Steve Davis with his look at four players who can go from this Gold Cup to the World Cup roster. Davis already assumes barring any injuries both Donovan and Holden will make it to Brazil. His four players who can use this tourney to catapault themselves into World Cup consideration are: -Diskerud -Shea -Torres -McInerney Kind of intriguing that the young McInerney would be included, even more when you consider that he did not even see the field in the friendly versus Guatemala. |

Each of those four could be in the hunt, though midway through the second half of the US-Belize game there's still no sign of McInerney. However, I think JK's first priority may to be identify another central defender to go along with Gonzalez, Besler and Goodson. Orozco is getting an audition tonight. Onyewu will be in the mix, possibly Bocanegra. Depending on Cherundolo's health and age and the whims of Chandler, IDing another right back -- be it Parkhurst, Cameron or whomever -- might also be a more urgent need. |

Agree more with Shel than Davis! Once again this broad shows more in depth analysis than the professional writers. The back line has to be JK's deepest concern right now, both starters and back ups, the whole mix. Shea? No way. A very nice club player, but there will be no room for him on the WC squad unless there is a rash of injuries. Really, the same goes for the other 3 it seems to me. Gooch would be a great veteran back up for the squad imo. Bring him in as a close down defensive sub where he woudln't have to run the entire game and he would be very tough for tired legs to beat. Time & the injury situation will tell but those four are real long shots it seems to me. |

I would only rate McInerney as a real long shot for a potential World Cup squad. As others noted he has yet to even play for this Gold Cup team but he also is very young and we have seen before, Donovan and Beasley leading up to 2002 as prime examples, of young players coming from obscurity to national team. I think Shea, Diskerud and Torres, while all on the fringe of the team now, each have a chance with a good season and/or problems with those in front of them in the depth chart, of making a claim to a place on the 2014 team. |
