Klinsmann also said he had an agreement with MLS clubs that MLS players used in June's World Cup qualifiers would not be used in the Gold Cup in group play. But he can make up to 4 changes for the 2nd round and thus players like Besler, Gonzalez, Davis, Zusi and Eddie Johnson who made the list of alternates could conceivably be added to the Gold Cup team for the knockout rounds.

Interesting that Beasley, Castillo and Corona were also selected for these games and the qualifying matches, not much of a summer break for any of them!

Interesting that Klinsmann is granting Bocanegra time off to find a new club but is not doing the same for Onyewu who is in the same boat.

Others mentioned Donovan, Holden and Onyewu as players who can really use this Gold Cup to get back into the national team picture. I'd add former regulars Beckerman, Torres and Gomez to that list too.

Looks like the Washington Post article Yogi linked along with the roster being named, has been updated to include some Klinsmann quotes re Bocanegra,

Klinsmann, on Bocanegra’s omission: “Carlos and I had a long talk. He is basically in the middle of another [club] move. He is going to leave, it looks like today. He is in the middle of making up his mind of where he wants to continue his career. We agreed to leave him out in order for him to have all options open to join a new team right away from the start” of a club training camp or the regular season (if MLS).

So as Yogi speculated, this omission was to enable him to find a new club.  nothing wrong in that.

And probably look for Mike Magee sometime in a future training camp too,

On whether he considered MLS scoring ace Mike Magee: “Mike is a player we follow, absolutely. He didn’t make it into the 35. We follow all the MLS games. We talk to the coaches. Mike is now in the picture as well but not for the Gold Cup.”

Thanks for the update, TonyDE...nice to know that Boca is not in JK's "doghouse" but just looking for a new club. Agree with Martin though, about Gooch!!

Would love to see Magee involved in the future but means he might have to continue on this incredible run he's on...not easy!

Actually the two players I am most intrigued on this Gold Cup roster are Josh Gatt, can he become the winger the US seeks on the right side? And Jack McInerney, the 20 year old top scorer in MLS. Will he beat out the more experienced Wondolowski and Bruin for playing time?

I also am interested to see if both Jose Torres and Joe Corona can reproduce their club form for the national team. Torres' best role is really doing what Bradley does with the full team. But he obviously has to play second fiddle to the more accomplished Bradley, but on this Gold Cup team he will have the chance to show Klinsmann he can be a midfield general.

Totally agree, raconteur...I'm also very interested in seeing how Gatt, McInerney, Torres & Corona all perform!!

Potentially bad news for both Josh Gatt and Corey Ashe, each were injured playing over the weekend putting their Gold Cup participation in doubt.

Neither player seems to have much good luck, they each continually get injured just before they are to report to national team duty. Yet no great loss either since as the linked article notes, both were down the depth chart even on this second choice Gold Cup squad.

Seriously...what bad luck for both <_<

Really wanted to see what Gatt could bring to the USMNT, if anything :(

So Brek Shea, who was just training with the team before reporting to preseason camp with Stoke City will now stay with the US and fill Josh Gatt's roster space.

Based on the Guatemala game, Shea has a good chance of becoming a starter.

Call me skeptical, but the reported injuries and Boca's "desire" to get on with finding his team may just be cover for Klinsmann to politely pass on the news to these folks that NOW is not their time.

Sounds like political spin to me, although there may be nicks and bumps involved.

Good question John. But maybe he will now get a chance as Herculez Gomez is returning to Tijuana. probably because the Mexican league season is about to start and he is a newcomer at the club.

Up to 4 subs from the list of alternates can be added now, we should know tomorrow how many additions Klinsmann will make. At least one to replace Gomez. But who might that be, Eddie Johnson? Grahame Zusi?

Making the rounds on the internet are these roster changes,

US adds Eddie Johnson, Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez, Alan Gordon, drops Ashe, Gomez, Onyewu and McInerney.

Klinsmann getting serious. You'd expect Besler, Gonzalez and Johnson to start from here on out.

I am surprised that the MLS clubs where Johnson, Besler and Gonzalez play are letting them go once again on national team duty. Well not surprised because they are obligated but you think their club coaches cannot be too happy.

It WAS Alan Gordon who helped save the US against Antigua in the qualifying round of WCQ. I think he was on the field for all of ten minutes, but he was supremely instrumental in getting the goal scored by Eddie Johnson to clinch it.

Gordo deserves more than that footnote. He is aged, but still has qualities that are useful. I say bravo to the guy even if he won't be in Brazil next summer.
