The 35 player preliminary roster for the Gold Cup:

Goalkeepers: Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo), *Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

Defenders: Corey Ashe (Houston Dynamo), *DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla, Mexico), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), *Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Carlos Bocanegra (Racing Santander, Spain), *Edgar Castillo (Tijuana, Mexico), Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles Galaxy), Oguchi Onyewu (Malaga, Spain), Michael Orozco (Puebla, Mexico), *Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg, Germany),

Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Helsingborg, Sweden), Joe Corona (Tijuana, Mexico), *Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg, Norway), *Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Benny Feilhaber (Sporting Kansas City), Josh Gatt (Molde, Norway), *Stuart Holden (Bolton Wanderers, England), Brek Shea (Stoke City, England), Jose Torres (Tigres, Mexico), *Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

Forwards: Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), *Herculez Gomez (Santos, Mexico), Alan Gordon (San Jose Earthquakes), *Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders), Jack McInerney (Philadelphia Union), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes), Bobby Wood (1860 Munich, Germany).
*On U.S. roster for Germany game.

Note returns for Donovan, Bocanegra and Onyewu. Plus first time callups for young forwards Wood and McInerney. Obviously this is not a final list and my guess is most, if not all, the players on the roster to play Germany will not be selected for the Gold Cup.

I thought I had previously read where Klinsmann said players would not double up on June World Cup qualifying and the Gold Cup which is why the inclusion of so many players from the roster who played Germany today is a little surprising. Perhaps some of those on this Germany roster will not make the trip to Jamaica or play at home versus Panama and Honduras?

A chance for redemption though for the veterans Donovan, Bocanegra, Onyewu and Beckerman.

I have to think some MLS teams, like my Sporting KC, aren't going to be too pleased if JK carriers over players from this cycle of friendlies and WCQs to the Gold Cup.

As for Boca and Gooch, well, we'll see. I was glad to see McInerney called up.

Anyone know the citizenship status of another young MLS forward, New England's Fagundez? He was pretty impressive today vs. LA and has five goals on the season (four in his last five game, I believe).

Good to see Landon, Boca & Gooch back in the team...but wonder about their form!

Not crazy about Castillo, Feilhaber, Gordon or Wondo but pleasantly surprised to see Gatt & McInerney called in! Never heard of or seen Wood

It'll be interesting to see how JK trims down this roster. How many of the MLS players, particularly those that are now on the roster for qualifiers, will be retained?

What may be most interesting about that is whether JK keeps Gonzalez and Besler for the Gold Cup. As an SKC fan -- and I'm sure my Galaxy brethren would agree -- I don't want them to miss anymore league games than necessary. However, as a US fan, they could use the Gold Cup to build greater chemistry in central defense.

Not a big deal, but I'm also wondering about a few others. Is Dax McCarty hurt, and what in the world has happened to George John? I'm also wondering about Buddle and Findley. They aren't exactly tearing up MLS, but their performance has been on par with some of those on the 35-man roster. And, I'd would have liked to have seen Osvaldo Alonso on the roster with a chance to get his first cap as a new US citizen.

Wondo has to be called in. He has done everything possible to earn this chance. Do I think he makes the Final 23 for Brazil if we qualify? Doubt it, but anyone who produces for as long as he has in our domestic league deserves the opportunity to represent his country.

I am pulling for him to make it interesting for Heir Klinsmann's decisions.

I agree with shel. Alonso needed to be called in. He has been solid in league action. Plus, he could pick up a match against his native country.

No Guzan? Seems to me, he warrants the matches more than the other keepers and it would not hurt to continue grooming him with this Nats mates in the event Howard gets hurt down the road.

Diego Fagundez was born in Uruguay, but moved to the USA at age five. He has played on US Youth national teams. I would assume he has citizenship because he could not possibly be here without such status for so long in such a high profile job. His father was a pro player in his country of birth, I believe.

Definitely agree, shelsoccer...regarding Omar & Besler in the Gold Cup! Though, must admit that I'm interested in seeing if Boca & Gooch have ANY chemistry left & if their bodies can still withstand the rigors of international play. Also, agree about the other players you mentioned, getting a look!

On the roster thread we discussed some comments from klinsmann which implied Rimando will be the Gold Cup starter in goal. Why no Guzan some (esp. Vince) may ask? Because he needs a break before Aston Villa's preseason camp starts up again.

Other than a backup goalie or two I really do not expect any outfield player who sees action in these next three qualifiers to make the Gold Cup roster. Klinsmann knows he needs to accommodate the players and their clubs, especially the MLS ones who are in-season.

Wasn't sure where to put this, so decided on this thread:

http://prosoccertalk.nbcsports.com/2013/06...-ahead/related/

Call me crazy but, as long as he's fully healed from that injury & finds regular playing time somewhere, I think Gooch can be a viable option for the USMNT in the future!

The question is where...and, while I don't blame him for wanting to stay in Europe, I feel that it'd be best if he finds an MLS club rather than sit on the bench at a second-tier European club.

Wonder if JK can use his influence & find a Bundesliga club that would give Gooch a serious look in the fall? After all, Germany is the only European country that Gooch hasn't played in :P

Actually that's a damn good idea af, JK could help Gooch find a home, one would think.

Good grief, Gooch looks like he is no stranger to the weight room. Impressive.

Here is the 23 player roster:

Goalkeepers: Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake).

Defenders: Corey Ashe (Houston Dynamo), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Edgar Castillo (Tijuana), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Oguchi Onyewu (Malaga), Michael Orozco Fiscal (Puebla), Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg).

Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Helsinborg), Joe Corona (Tijuana), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Joshua Gatt (Molde), Stuart Holden (Bolton), Jose Torres (Tigres).

Forwards: Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Herculez Gomez (Tijuana), Jack McInerney (Philadelphia Union), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes).

And this being the Gold Cup there always will be something different about it, these 12 from the prelim roster are still eligible to be selected at some point once the 2nd round starts:

Goalkeeper: Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo).

Defenders: Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Carlos Bocanegra (Racing Santander), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles Galaxy).

Midfielders: Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Benny Feilhaber (Sporting Kansas City), Brek Shea (Stoke City), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City).

Forwards: Alan Gordon (San Jose Earthquakes), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders), Bobby Wood (1860 Munich).

Worth noting Carlos Bocanegra was not selected. Is he out of the national team picture or was this to give him a chance to find a new club?

Klinsmann’s comments about recalling Donovan:

Quote:

“When Landon came back in the end of March after the long break, he needed time to get back in a rhythm, get back in shape and work on his game again. Now the process is on a good roll. He’s getting sharper every game and every week. We’ve watched his games and believe now is a good time to get him back into the national team and give him the opportunity to prove his point. He knows the group that played the World Cup qualifiers is ahead of the curve and has a very strong position right now, and that he’s been observed by us and has to rebuild his case. We have all respect for what he has done in the past, but sports are about the present and about the future.”

An assorted set of comments from Klinsmann on the Gold Cup roster, it is I think worth reading. His comments on several veterans with another chance here,

So, two big things, one is to win the competition and two, allow the players to build their case for the World Cup. The door is always open; you never shut the door in soccer to players, no matter what difficult stretch they are going through with their club teams. This is a good way to show them that even though they went through tough moments with their clubs, we always kept things open. We made it clear that it’s down to the player to understand their opportunities. If you look at Oguchi Onyewu or Michael Parkhurst or Stuart Holden, this is their opportunity. Things didn’t go the way they wished over the last season or months, but there is the opportunity because some players can’t be here and because they deserve it.”

No comments from Herr Klinsmann on why Bocanegra was not selected.

Glaringly no comment on Boca. No way this can be downplayed it seems. No mention of new injury, cut from the preliminary cast of 35. Not good at all.
Sad to see for the former Captain who must have something left in the tank. :(

(late edit: Interview with JK on USSF website also glaringly makes no question or mention of Bocanegra. Just ridiculous not to question JK and not to comment on the veteran.)

No Boca? What's going on? And I thought Landon was the one in JK's "doghouse"

Glad to see Gooch back in the mix & happy...though, a bit surprised...to see Beasley called in, after playing in WCQ.

Looking forward to seeing Bedoya, Corona, Gatt, Diskerud, Gomez, Holden & Landon...and curious to see what McInerney can bring to the table! :)

Looks like the Washington Post article Yogi linked along with the roster being named, has been updated to include some Klinsmann quotes re Bocanegra,

Klinsmann, on Bocanegra’s omission: “Carlos and I had a long talk. He is basically in the middle of another [club] move. He is going to leave, it looks like today. He is in the middle of making up his mind of where he wants to continue his career. We agreed to leave him out in order for him to have all options open to join a new team right away from the start” of a club training camp or the regular season (if MLS).

So as Yogi speculated, this omission was to enable him to find a new club. nothing wrong in that.

And probably look for Mike Magee sometime in a future training camp too,

On whether he considered MLS scoring ace Mike Magee: “Mike is a player we follow, absolutely. He didn’t make it into the 35. We follow all the MLS games. We talk to the coaches. Mike is now in the picture as well but not for the Gold Cup.”
