Seattle's Brad Evans, as a midfielder and especially as a right back, has been added to the roster.

I side with John's argument here, Donovan adds something to the US team which no other player is capable of doing. Thus I would include him on the team even if he still is finding his feet after his time away. He's had several months now to get back into some form and is doing reasonably well with Los Angeles.

Avi Creditor with an insightful piece on reading into Klinsmann's roster selection process. I think it is worth reading, particularly for his analysis why players like Holden and Shea were selected while Donovan and Cherundolo were not and why those decisions may not be consistent in a general view but each serve a particular need of the coach-Holden & Shea to give them playing time after long periods of inactivity, Cherundolo omitted to give him time to be fresh for next season, Donovan in order not to break up some team chemistry.

It is that last point which also deserves more explanation I think as apparently Klinsmann thinks Donovan's sabbatical has caused some dissention within the US team (something to watch for the future.) Why? Are other players upset Donovan was granted something they could never obtain themselves (a sabbatical?)

And the article also notes how JK feels Bocanegra is now 5th in line at centerback behind the 4 central defenders picked for this roster-Gonzalez, Besler, Cameron & Goodson. The coach also does not view Bocanegra as a left back.

Yeah, why? Is this a real team/locker room issue or is it coach-speak bull shit? Has or could LD mess up team chemistry, or is it the manager's sensibilites and chemistry that is the issue here? :angry:

Good question John but I do not think any of us can really answer that query. Maybe during this long time together (almost a month) we will read some stories on how the rest of the US players feel about Donovan, but until or unless that happens then who knows what is the real reason behind Donovan's omission.

My gut feeling is it does relate to Donovan's absence and his previous lackluster play for the US in the past year or two. Klinsmann wants to light a fire under Donovan and see if he responds by playing with more vitality. I think for all his new age talk, Klinsmann also is pragmatic and if he felt the current version of Donovan would help the US then he would include him on the team.

Maurice Edu (hernia) and Corey Ashe (strained groin) left the US training camp due to injuries and apparently won't be back for this series of games. I did not even know Ashe had been added to the roster but he was for the game against Belgium because Fabian Johnson won't play due to Hoffenheim's involvement in the promotion playoffs in Germany (which Hoffenheim won today BTW)

Another absentee for the next few games at least, and possibly longer is Brek Shea who has a calf injury. If he recovers in time he will rejoin the US team sometime in June.

With 2 out of 3 qualifiers at home, this is the US' big opportunity to collect some points. I know Michael Bradley will not report to camp until after the May 26 Coppa Italia Final so he likely will not play vs belgium and maybe not against germany either. But rest assured he and Jermaine Jones should be the heart of the US midfield in the three qualifiers.

What I am looking for in these games,

-The continued development of defenders Gonzalez, Besler and Cameron;
-Altidore finally scoring for the national team;
-Fabian Johnson owning the left flank in these matches;
-Somebody (Zusi?Kljestan? Davis?) stepping up and filling Donovan's shoes

One writer's US "to do" list for these five games, his list:

1. Get Jozy Altidore back among the goals
2. Find out what Stuart Holden has
3. Give Fabian Johnson minutes at left midfield
4. Get the offense kick-started
5. Secure at least six points in the Hexagonal

Hard to contradict any of these points but I think Tony's comments are even more appropriate for these games.

That list is nice, but it is missing arguably the number one priority for the US MNT:

Establish a reliable and organized DEFENSE!!!! :blink:
