Jurgen Klinsmann named the US roster for the late May friendlies vs Belgium and Germany and the World Cup qualifiers versus Jamaica and Panama. Here it is, Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa), Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Tim Howard (Everton), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake). Defenders: DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Clarence Goodson (Brondby), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim), Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg) Midfielders: Michael Bradley (Roma), Joe Corona (Club Tijuana), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Maurice Edu (Bursaspor), Stuart Holden (Bolton), Jermaine Jones (Schalke), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht), Brek Shea (Stoke City), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City) Forwards : Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna), Clint Dempsey (Tottenham Hotspur), Herculez Gomez (Santos), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders FC There will be a rotating cadre of MLS based goalies for these matches. We all know Howard and Guzan are 1-2. Steve Cherundolo is misisng as Klinsmann says he still needs to rest his knee, even if he now is back playing for his club. Obviously the coach is looking to give the veteran all the time he needs to recover. Timothy Chandler also is missing due to injury. Veterans Carlos Bocanegra and Oguchi Onyewu are both omitted too but that is not a surprise based on recent US rosters. In midfield the big news is Stuart Holden's return, likely just for the training to keep him fit and see where he stands in his comeback but heartening to see no matter what the circumstances. In attack the big news is what we discussed in the Player Pool thread, Landon Donovan will not be there. Expect him to be in the Gold Cup though with the B team along with several foreign based players who are not on this roster like Mix Diskerud, Josh Gatt and Alejandro Bedoya. |

There also is a 3rd qualifying game too as the US will host Honduras in mid June. Apart from the goalkeepers, only 5 of the 23 field players are from MLS clubs. |

Interesting point, Manzanares. At first glance this is a good thing, the fact that we have so many guys playing at a theoretically higher level than the MLS overseas. Is that right, or is there a counter point? |

I suppose so John but the counter point could also be that the foreign based players will be tired after a long club season. When the US plays Jamaica, odds are Jamaica will have more MLS starters in their lineup than the US. The same may even apply with Honduras (Bengston, Garcia, Bernardez, maybe M.Martinez) |

I wonde rif Bocanegra and Onyewu will join Donovan, Diskerud, Gatt and Bedoya on the Gold Cup roster? If they don't it is pretty likely their national team careers while Jurgen Klinsmann remains coach are over. So no Cherundolo or Chandler due to injury, I guess that means Cameron and Parkhurst will be the right backs. I like Cameron as a central defender and wish we could see more of him there in these upcoming 5 games but I understand the necessity of playing him on the right with Cherundolo and Chandler each injured. |

Yeah, well, I've pretty much no faith in JK, except as a self-promoting motivational 'guru' with motivational techniques that resemble weird power play games. Though if he manages to truly alienate LD, he's an ever bigger fool than I take him to be. As to John's question/point, without specifically advocating for or against any player in particular, I'd very much question whether the Austrian and Danish Leagues are at all better than MLS. To be honest, it's less the players called in than it is the eleven + subs that he uses in any given game, and how they're deployed, that concerns me most. |

Another day in June, we'll pick eleven for football We're playing for our lives, the referee gives us f**k-all | |

Klinsmann will eventually be judged by his results, if he does well then who he did or did not call in will be forgotten. Having said that if Donovan keeps progressing on his comeback, he surely will get another crack at the team. |

Klinsmann explains the goalkeeping rotation system in the coming month.
Actually that makes sense and is understanding of the players and their club situation. Also note where he considers each goalie in the depth chart, and which keeper will be accompanying Howard and Guzan to each of these upcoming 5 games,

Yes I think Klinsmann is doing the reasonable thing with his keeper rotation. As the article notes Rimando is his number 3 now and likely will be the Gold Cup starter. A good chance to reward a pretty good keeper who has had to play the 3rd wheel for so long on the national team. So I watched today's New York-Los Angeles game and to be frank Landon Donovan did not really stand out. I can see why Klinsmann is still not convinced he is ready for first team duty. |

I had a similar impression, raconteur. Even saying that, however,if we were picking sides, nearly all of us would select Donovan in the first choice to suit up. This next month will either be very interesting and fun or cause for alarm. These next three matches will determine how much we will sweat in Sept/Oct for WCQs. Cards and injuries may prove the pivotal point. |

With 2 out of 3 qualifiers at home, this is the US' big opportunity to collect some points. I know Michael Bradley will not report to camp until after the May 26 Coppa Italia Final so he likely will not play vs belgium and maybe not against germany either. But rest assured he and Jermaine Jones should be the heart of the US midfield in the three qualifiers. What I am looking for in these games, -The continued development of defenders Gonzalez, Besler and Cameron; -Altidore finally scoring for the national team; -Fabian Johnson owning the left flank in these matches; -Somebody (Zusi?Kljestan? Davis?) stepping up and filling Donovan's shoes |

Good points Tony, each of those are areas to watch in these upcoming games, especially the 3 WCQ matches. True Vince, we would all pick Donovan if on form, but is he now? I just realized Jose Torres was not named to this team. Didn't he start for Tigres this past season, the club which had the best regular season record in Mexico? |

I would pick LD without blinking, r. 2 goals and 3 assists in a little over 6 games played is all I need to know about one Landon Donovan being far enough on the road to his old self. Besides, other than goals, it is his terrific vision of the field, his uncanny passing dangerous balls into space, and his ability to control the ball in the offensive 1/3 that make him unlike most anyone else you would play in front of him. The US flat out does not have the wealth of talent at the highest level, unlike say, er, um, say a Germany, to be able to shelve a player of his unique talent now. As far as I am concerend this is about managerial gamesmanship on JK's part, some of it warranted, but certainly not if he carries it much past the friendlies. The trouble with carrying it even that far is that then the claim will be made that LD didn't play in the warm ups, so how can you bring him in only for the qulaifiers....
