That is 9:30 pm EDT. So what do you guys think, will the lineup vs Jamaica be pretty similar to what we saw start vs Germany? I think it will. In fact I do not think I'd make any changes from that starting XI. |

Ya, if you look at the roster there is not anyone who should really come close to a start ahead of the starters for Germany unless someone has a knock. I'd sure like to see a little of Holden. Saw more than enough of Boyd and Castillo to be unimpressed, so hope other subs are used ahead of them if there are additional subs. (of note and a wee bit of humor was the tv coverage right after the Germany match where Dempsey was still chewing Boyd's ass for that far flung shot near the end instead of holding the ball and wasting clock...) With the schedule of games just past and coming up it would sure be nice to be able to use all our subs in this match to rest starters if the score allows. Ever the optimist!

Some pregame notes from Steve Goff of the Washington Post, he also quotes Klinsmann saying roughly what some posters here already noted, Jamaica's loss last night to Mexico makes them absolutely need to win on Friday vs the US. Klinsmann also points out how Cameron's sue at the club level at right back ahs hurt him on the national team because he is needed at centerback but is not currently playing there for Stoke, and right back where he does play is not his best position. Goff also points out this as we head into three straight qualifying games, Two of the 25 players will remain in street clothes Friday night. Herculez Gomez‘s sore knee might eliminate him from consideration for the active roster. Three goalkeepers must be included on the 23-man list, so Houston’s Tally Hall is in. Seven players are carrying yellow cards and, with their next caution, would miss the subsequent match: Michael Bradley, Fabian Johnson, Graham Zusi, Clint Dempsey, DaMarcus Beasley, Matt Besler and Brad Davis. (Maurice Edu is in the same situation but was scratched from the current roster with an injury.) That answers a question I had about why we had not yet seen Herculez Gomez in the two friendlies. And suspensions could become an issue in the next two matches this month. |

Cards will, not could, be a problem as we move forward. Fortunately, every team must deal with this issue in qualifying and we have a bit of a luxury with depth. Teams like Jamaica and Panama can really feel it if a major player must sit. |

Based on what we have seen over quite some time now, the worst impact to the US team would be losing one Mr. M. Bradley. I might go so far as to say that he so heavily impacts the look and play of this team, that we could almost better afford to lose any two of the other players than him. |

To borrow a Darryl Strawberry analogy, so you are saying John that Michael Bradley is the straw that stirs the US' drink? ![]() Grant Wahl with some pre match observations. Note his discussion with past coaches and players about being a captain and the apparent icy relationship now between Bruce Arena and Claudio Reyna. It has nothing to do with this game but still is interesting to read. |

Precisely, Rufus! .....tickles me to read Arena's and Reyna's takes. Even those brief, subtle comments belie the grudging respect they had for each other, coupled with very little afffection. But, then, how many players ever had any affection for Brucie, THE GARGOYLE, as we dubbed him on the old AOL soccer board??? LOL!!

Against Mexico on Tuesday I thought Jamaica showed very little other than speed and some danger on set pieces, that is where the US will have to be careful. But if the US can control the ball and with Bradley and Jones in midfield I think they can, then Altidore and Dempsey will have chances to score. |

This place continues to amaze me, never thought I would read a Darryl Strawberry analogy on this message board! ![]() To back up what John and Rufus wrote about Michael Bradley, this is another Wahl piece this time about Michael Bradley and it details how he approaches the game. Not surprisingly as the son of a coach, he is thoughtful in his analysis. Bradley also discusses how Jamaica's athletic and physical style makes them difficult to play against. Bradley missed last fall's match in the previous round when the US lost to Jamaica. I do not expect that to be repeated tonight a she should provide a calming influence on the game. |

The US will have a much different lineup that the one which lost 2-1 last September in Jamaica. This was the lineup then: 1-Tim Howard (capt.); 15-Michael Parkhurst, 21-Clarence Goodson, 20-Geoff Cameron, 23-Fabian Johnson; 13-Jermaine Jones, 5-Kyle Beckerman (14-Danny Williams, 72), 7-Maurice Edu (11-Brek Shea, 72); 8-Clint Dempsey, 17-Jozy Altidore (18-Terrence Boyd, 72), 9-Herculez Gomez Of those players Parkhurst, Goodson, Cameron, Beckerman, Edu and Gomez will not start tonight. That is 6 different starters from then. Plus subs Williams and Shea did not make the trip either. Klinsmann will I think have learned the lessons from that game and I agree with the comments that having Bradley in midfield should impose a calming influence on the game for the US. |

I know Brad Evans earned a goodly amount of praise for his efforts against Germany (I only saw the first half) and I'm sure he deserved them, but he's not a right back, isn't a burner, and I have a real fear he's going to get exposed at least once tonight. As cafetero notes, the reggae Boyz are speedy, and Klinsmann has trotted out some awfully slow line-ups. I'd also rather that Jones and Dempsey had not each played 180 in the two lead-up friendlies. The WCQ road form hasn't been great under JK, either. Gawd I've become an real downer, haven't I? I'll take a point and be happy, is I guess what I'm saying. |

Ha, Roos, I was just gettin' ready to thank you for all the good pregame vibes! But, hell yes, I'd take the point myself right now. Trouble is, to get a point, you have to play to win on the road imo. Playing for the tie in qualifying on the road is the kiss of death every time. Have to go in and try to score, then hold the goal lead if you can and even that is tough. Play for the tie from the outset and you perish. |

Wow first ever wcq win in The Office, GO USA!!! My wife's take: "She was unimpressed with the quality of the play. Says Dempsey faded and it was not WC quality play. Plus her "Timmy" let her down. Liked DMB but wants him to purge and lose a few lbs." A little harsh possibly, eh? JK paid the price for not subbing folks like Dempsey and Bradley in friendlies as they were clearly gassed, among others. And while Howard's boots were nailed to the pitch on the set piece goal, a US defender was screened and knocked flat on his ass in what was an obvious take down foul. US MoTM? how about Zusi? Well, a historic and possibly fortunate victory that should keep the US loose and calm in the upcoming matches next week, NiCE eh. |
