I bought a few ducats when they announced the match months ago, but had to snag a few more for friends. I was surprised to see only a few dozen left per Ticket Master. It will easily be a sellout.

From the Washington Post:

With 38,500 tickets sold, the U.S. men’s national team friendly against Germany on June 2 at Washington’s RFK Stadium is the biggest seller among the four approaching home matches.

Seattle is second with 32,000 for the World Cup qualifier against Panama on June 11. Cleveland has sold about 18,500 for the May 29 friendly against Belgium. With 20,000 seats, Rio Tinto Stadium outside Salt Lake City sold out quickly for the June 18 qualifier against Honduras.

Washington is the only game on a weekend (a Sunday afternoon).

Hope you enjoyed the match Vince, the teams definitely gave you goals.

A much better overall game from the US as they defeated Germany 4-3 in a strange match, not the greatest defending from either team but much, much better offensive work from the US, in particular Jozy Altidore who scored one and set up another. Dempsey added 2 goals while the other US goal came from the most comical own goal you will ever see as the German keeper Ter Stegen basically escorted the ball into his own net!

Gonzalez-Besler were the central defenders for this game and they do seem to be on the same page much more than any other central defensive combo the US currently has. Of the two I would say Besler looked the more comfortable dealing with the German attackers. Brad Evans got the nod at right back and played all right, he may have won himself the starting job for the game in Jamaica next week. Beasley at times had trouble on the left with the physical strength of the Germans but overall had I thought an adequate game. When Edgar Castillo came on for him later in the match I thought the US defense became a little more unsettled as Castillo has not had much time to work with his teammates as he just arrived in camp after his club was eliminated from the Copa Libertadores last Thursday.

In midfield, Klinsmann went with Bradley and Jones in central midfield and I thought they did their job. Zusi wide right and Fabian Johnson wide left gave the team some width and Zusi was more involved today than he was versus the Belgians. Brad Davis came on early in the 2nd half for Johnson who left with an injury, hopefully that was just precautionary ahead of Friday's game in Jamaica because Johnson looked pretty good on the left.

Dempsey had what I thought was a pretty quiet first half but when the US needed him as Germany cut the score to 2-1, there was Dempsey with two good finishes to ice the game. that is what you need from your star player.

It is just a friendly so you do not want to read too much into it, and Germany were missing all of their players from Munich, Dortmund and Madrid (except for Sven Bender of Dortmund) but after the way the US played against Belgium, the team needed a confidence builder and I think that is what it got from this game. Now on to Jamaica.

Viel und Danke Herr Marc-Andre ter Stegen :P the final score should have not been that close. I thought Bradley was gassed & Edu should have been brought in. Also why was Deuce playing the full 90? I guess we should just be happy to beat Deutschland, especially after my Father-in-law called to remind me about the match on Friday. I guess he shouldn't have done that :D

What a crazy match. I wont get too worked up one away or the other over the last two matches but hopefully they will have served some purpose and we see that starting Friday.

The one thing I will say is that I hope Donovan is ready to come back to Dempsey's team. Haha.

Ter Stegen's mistake will live in infamy for years! The game did get sloppy at the end and Germany nearly tied it. Still some things to learn especially defensively but better overall play than versus Belgium. 4 reasons why in my view:
-Bradley returned to stabilize the midfield
-Before leaving with injury Fabian Johnson gave the midfield width and dynamism
-Besler stabilized the backline and teams up well with Gonzalez; and
-Altidore finaly reproduced his club form with the national team.

Like robdog I was a little surprised to see Dempsey go 90 in such heat before Friday's game in Jamaica but after playing in England, perhaps Klinsmann wanted him to acclimatize to conditions which may be similar to what is faced in Kingston?

I think I would be satisfied with this XI to play against Jamaica.

I'll agree with Rufus' four take-aways. As for Ter Stegen, my youngest son turned to me and said, "That was worse than Robert Green."

I like Rufus' 4 factors why the US played better today than they did versus Belgium. I would add two more, one this German team was essentially on a post season vacation, they do not have any World Cup qualifying matches until the fall and did not play with the intensity or focus that Belgium, who fielded more regular starters, and who play next week in World Cup qualifying, did. A win and four goals scored is encouraging but the defense is still not in my opinion settled and will have to play with more intensity AND concentration in these next three matches.

I do agree with others that the play of Besler, Evans and of course F. Johnson and Bradley, all newcomers today to the lineup, likely ensures their starting status this Friday in Jamaica.

The best aspect of this game was the US got Altidore back scoring and being a factor offensively. His contributions will be needed the rest of the way in qualifying.

Defensively this still looks like the most vulnerable US team in years, maybe since the 1998 World Cup squad. Where is the defensive leader on this team? The Dooley, Pope, Agoos or Bocanegra of the squad?

FINALLY...Jozy Altidore played his best game as a USMNT player! Hopefully, there's more performances like that in the future!!

Thought everybody played well...except for Castillo...though, far from perfect. Our backline continues to struggle but thought Brad Evans made a strong case for being the starting RB & Beasley struggled at times but IMO is the best LB option.

Omar & Besler might be the best CB tandem...which isn't saying A LOT. Omar continues to struggle, while adapting to the international game, but still believe he will become our best central defender in due time.

Bradley/Jones were solid & Zusi's cross was as sweet as Jozy's finish ;) Was hoping to see Holden, as I think he can be a very effective option at LM or AM.

First 80 minutes were solid & liked how we responded after the Germans' first goal but the last 10 minutes were VERY shaky...nevertheless, a great win over a top-quality opponent & great way to celebrate our 100th anniversary B)

Of course, the "real competition" starts now & if we stink it up v Jamaica, this significant result will go bye-bye :(

Apart from the very disappointing public transport (I may never ride the DC Metro again) and having to return to NYC at halftime (don't ask), I enjoyed this day trip immensely. Vince and I were perched above the RFK clock and had trouble seeing the first two goals, but it was easy to see the US was much more composed and aggressive in this match. There were some flaws in defense (can't remember who it was that easily ran around Besler before shooting wide), but the free-flowing offense made up for it.

It was especially gratifying to see Altidore working well with Dempsey and getting good support from the midfield.

Ter Stegen will forever be known as the new Peter Enkelman, but we should give props to Jones for distracting the keeper with a feint toward the ball.

At one point Vince and I were discussing the history of this rivalry:

"When was the last time the US beat Germany?"

"1945."

"Yeah. And that was on their home field."

Ok I got the scope of what happened @ JFK yesterday from my Father-in-Law from Deutschland - Jogi Löw wanted to take some of the pressure off of his good friend Kliensmann. So he ordered ter Stegen to misplay the ball :D that turned out to be the winning goal - btw most German papers wished ter Stegen stayed in bed - I remember when Altidore tried that shot from midfield & how ter Stegen was stumbling around to get back - Now that was funny :D

Sorry you missed the 2nd half Winslow, despite the heat I enjoyed the match, was seated upper deck near the penalty spot on the side where ter Stegen committed his blunder. One of the worst goalkeeping gaffes I have ever seen. Yes shelsoccer your son is right it tops Robert Green's versus the US in South Africa and I think even Peter Enckleman's mistake for Aston Villa against Birmingham. Here are the two mistakes, yesterday's by Ter Stegen and Enckleman's back in 2006. Very similar but on Enckleman's own goal, at least the ball was bouncing a bit when it came to his foot, yesterday the ball was rolling to Ter Stegen and theoretically should have been easier to control than the bouncing throw in to Enckleman. A really, really horrible mistake by Ter Stegen, a player who is considered one of the top young goalies both in Germany and Europe.

As for the game, a useful match and one where some confidence should be restored prior to the start of World Cup qualifying. The real test starts Friday and let's see then where this team stands. After that match I think we will better be able to discern matters such as if the defense is functioning all right, if the midfield is creating chances for the attackers and possessing the ball well and whether the attackers are finishing their scoring opportunities.
