Starting the topic for Tuesday game at the Estadio Azteca. Last August the US got out of their with a smash and grab 1-0 friendly visit, the US' first ever win there. but a qualifier is different matter. But neither team enters this game in the best of form, Mexico ahs 2 ties in 2 games played while the US has a win and a loss in its two Hexagonal games played. I cannot see Klinsmann using the same XI as played against Costa Rica but who should he change? |

We get a point here and it is a major accomplishment. Mexico is reeling with their results from the first two matches. One thing I feel very confident about is we will have several players sitting out Jamaica as half our squad is sitting on yellow. A Mexico tussle is bound to bring more cards and will result in folks missing the next one in Kingston. |

Does it play into our favor that Mexico is in a more, even if only slightly, desperate situation than the US. Or does it work against us? Or does it really matter when these two teams play? I go into this game not worried about our offensive abilities. I like our offense, generally speaking. But will our defense be able to get the ball forward or will we be on our heels all night long? |

I think it is still so early in qualifying and with almost every game ending in a tie (ironically the only 2 which did not both involved the US) that no team is in a desperate state yet. This will be a closely fought Hexagonal and although Mexico lost 2 points at home by tying with Jamaica, they also did something the US were unable to do, go to Honduras and get a point. No team in CONCACAF travels as well as Mexico does and we all know how difficult it is playing at the Azteca for visiting teams. The US will need to play better than they did against either Honduras or Costa Rica if they are to obtain anything out of this match. Jermaine Jones will miss the game with an injury to his ankle, probably caused by trying to run through the snow. He was I thought one of the better players against Costa Rica but his hot headedness may not be a good mixture away to Mexico. Raises an interesting question of who would come in for him? Edu is a possibility but he also is an option at central defender. I am thinking maybe Edu for Goodson in defense with Beckerman, as he did last August at the Azteca in that friendly, playing just in front of the backline in place of Jermaine Jones. |

Interesting article here. I agree w/ the author. The USNMT needs LD more than the gals. Man, I will be extremely happy w/ a draw for the USNMT. Of course a win would put me over the moon

Donovan is still on his sabbatical, I can not remember any other player taking such a sabbatical like this, maybe the galaxy ahd no choice since Donovan, especilaly after Beckham's departure is their meal ticket but I still find it hard to beieve they would permit him to take so much time off. Klinsmann meanwhile is left holding the bag as he has no say in the matter and must plan on a US future without Donovan. In that sense he is now a bit like the oft injured Stuart Holden, you must plan as if he will not be part of the team. If he returns, all the better but you can not nor should not plan on his eventual return. I think the Mexico game is made for somebody like Eddie Johnson with speed on the counter as the US likely will have to absorb a lot of pressure and possession from Mexico. The US' hopes will ride on defending with discipline and trying to hit back either off a set piece or on the counter. That is where Johnson will be useful. |

As a few of us have opined, a Goodson-Gonzalez pairing seems nowhere near quick/fast enough against a quality opponent (at least in non-tundra conditions!) and though the Edu-Cameron pairing, which JK took a flier on, to some success, in the friendly win in Mexico, might be a better option, there is definitely the temptation to move Edu into the midfield Jones spot. I think I'd rather have Bradley- Kljestan as the central MF duo, with Beckerman playing 'sweeper'. Though of course that would mean throwing Justin Morrow out to the wolves at right back. No easy answers, I'm afraid, but I think most US supporters would be thrilled with a point, so it does leave some room for experimentation. |

Roosevelt, isn't Justin Morrow a left back? I do not see Klinsmann displacing Cameron on the right and Beasley on the left. Edu will come into the lineup somewhere, the question is where? I side with those preferring him in this game at central defense in place of one of Goodson/Gonzalez. Beckerman knows how to defend and that will be needed in this game so I can envision him in central midfield just ahead of the defense. As for Kljestan, I could see him coming in for Zusi who has not been very effective in either the Honduras or Costa Rica games. |

You are right, of course, about Morrow. But if Cameron slides to the middle someone else will have to be shoehorned in at right, and I'm not sure who else to nominate as wolf bait. This could be an ugly final scoreline.

Yep, hate to be and normally am not a pessimist, but with El Tri in near desperate straights, and the US limping in defensively, it could be a long, long night for he US back line. Losing Jones is another blow, hot head or not, he was the closest thing to an enforcer the US had left on the pitch. I don't like the situation for Azteca at all. Nothing going for the US at all going into this one.

Here's a fine how-do-you-do for our boys: Earthquake shakes Mexico City MEXICO CITY (AP) - Earthquakes shook Mexico City on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway in the capital and sending thousands fleeing into the streets as an earthquake alarm sounded. There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. |

That probably beats having a parade of car horns or setting off the hotel fire alarm in the middle of the night! Grant Wahl's preview of the match and how the August friendly gives the US more confidence going into this game. My opinion is that was a meaningless friendly, tonight is for real with 3 points on the line. |

If the Reggae Boyz can get a result in Estadio Azteca, don't see why our boys can't! The key will be the first 15-20 minutes IMO...Mexico will come out strong & the longer we can keep it 0-0, the more pressure Mexico will feel & the crowd could turn on them The only change I'd make is Edu for Jones in CM...but get the feeling it might be Beckerman <_< Should be interesting how the USMNT reacts to the difference in weather conditions over just 4 days...snow blizzard to unrelenting humidity & heat I'd be ESTACTIC with a draw...GO USMNT!!! |

The earthquake was in Oaxaca, pretty far south of Mexico City, it may have been felt in the capital but was not that strong. af10, the weather in Mexico City is pleasant this time of the year, should be in low 70s today and at kickoff in the low 60s, perfect weather to play futbol in! Good luck, hopefully we will discuss tomorrow the game and not the officials and may the best team win [but that team be wearing green jerseys! ]

I, personally, think we should prepare a protest if there is NOT 6 inches of snow on the ground tonight. And take a note from FIFA's ruling today...Dempsey needs to make mention of it right away!!! Just a thought... |
