The goal line official was not where he should have been on Ukraine's "goal." He had his right foot on the line and his left well into the field of play. So, he was viewing it at something of angle, not straight down the line like he should have been. I took some solace in Sweden's performance today (what a goal by Ibra!). Like Denmark and Croatia, they were worthy of a quarterfinal berth. Having said that, you can't ignore giving up leads vs. both Ukraine and England. Hamrin seems to have installed a more attacking mentality, but Sweden's lack of team speed often leaves them exposed. |

Good eye shelsoccer, even if he was slightly viewing it at an angle he still should have been able to make the call as even at a slight angle, he was still only a few yards/meters away and should have been able to see the ball entirely cross the line. If it was not already a given then this high profile miss, even with a goal line judge should signal the inevitable arrival of using some video technology to determine whether a goal was scored. Great, great goal by Ibrahimovic. There have been some other beautiful goals in this tourney by Pirlo, Balotelli, Kuba, Pavlyuchenko but Ibra's goal for me remains the best I have seen so far at Euro 2012. Just great timing and execution. Sweden, as another poster noted, goes out with their heads held high and suddenly France who looked pretty impressive in their first two games, now have a lot of questions surrounding them. And now they must replace the suspended Mexes. We discussed this before but Hodgson has made England into a pretty solid team in his short time in charge and much like Chelsea, they may not be stylish but they are effective and tough to break down. |

Agreed. Some, Michel Platini and former ref Pierluigi Collina among them, have claimed technology is not needed, just add the goal line refs and problem solved. We saw last night that is not the case. England are doing well and maybe part of that is they do not have any pressure, they were not expecting to do well in this Euro. But now they are in the quarterfinals and this is where the pressure begins. I think England's midfield will have to play better in order for the team to have success. |

Simon, if you throw the WAGs in there too, it should work better! And good on ya for noticing the Long Cox duo, which escaped me. (I wonder if there are photos like we saw some years ago, when Kuntz and de Kock faced each other in a Germany-Holland match.) (EDIT: My memory failed me--it appears de Kock never played for Holland against Germany, though the ex-Schalke man would've played against Kuntz in the Bundesliga. Can't find any photos though.) Ahem...back to footy... Sammy correctly notes that the error on Ukraine's shoulda-been-a-goal wouldn't have changed the group outcome, but it's still an outrage. The goal judge was right there. You've got to get these things right. I thought England might have trouble in this match because teams can have trouble when a regular comes back after a long layoff. They'll probably be better against Italy, but I still don't know whom to pick. We all remember those Swiss teams of the '90s regularly punching above their weight, so it's no real surprise that Hodgson has done well with this team. He's just a solid coach. But jeez, how come he never got Finland into the World Cup?

It was a horrible mistake by a goal judge who was right there, Winslow is right, these things have to be done right and that now seems to be the lead in to the adaption of goal line technology. It is the International Board in conjunction with FIFA and not UEFA and Michel Platini who will decide the issue. Sammy may have written that the disallowed goal would not have changed the match's outcome but that is a hypothetical we really can't answer. A goal for Ukraine at that time might have enlivened them and brought the crowd even more into the match. It also could have upped the pressure on England. We simply do not know so saying the goal would not have adversely effected the outcome of the match is I think wrong. |

Post game apparently the French players had it out against each other in the locker room. It will be Blanc's job to make sure that was just an airing of grievances after a disappointing loss and not the start of an unraveling of the team. Laurent Koscielny will come in for the suspended Mexes versus Spain. I think he can do an adequate job filling in for Mexes. In fact based on how Mexes played versus Sweden, maybe he won't be missed at all? |
