Feels like a baseball game, or for the English and Australians out there, cricket, with a rain delay! |

Me, too, John. Back to the pitch. A spirited and riveting match between Sweden and England today. Sweden has no one to blame but themselves for their exit, having squanderd leads in consecutive games. England has done enough to look forward to Rooney's return and hope that gets them through. Welbeck's deciding goal was a thing of beauty. Gerrard was very good. Sweden is lacking in midfield. Dropping Ibra back helped, but there's a trade off in that. |

I think England must've had a group wank at halftime--it would explain the ten minutes of dead-legged play that allowed Sweden to take the lead. But Walcott got lucky that his 25-yard speculative effort deceived the keeper, and lucky again that Welbeck was able to turn and get the back of his leg on Walcott's inaccurate cross to score the winner. As Shel noted, it was a brilliant touch. Despite the two Swedish goals, I was really impressed with Joe Hart's command of his area in this match. He has an excellent chance to establish himself as the best English keeper since Shilton. Once the skies cleared in Donetsk, Sheva carved out two more fine scoring chances against France. Maybe if he'd scored again it could've changed things, even though France had a clear advantage in play. I was really impressed with both wingbacks today. |

I thought France looked very good, like a team capable of making a semifinal run good. Ukraine may have been at home and had their talisman Shevchenko but France's midfield stamped its authority on the game. Ribery, Nasri, Diarra, Cabaye and Menez all played well, Benzema is so skilled and mobile while, as Winslow pointed out, Debuchy and Clichy were each so dangerous on the overlap. France look good. Plenty of excitement in England-Sweden and Engand's first competitive win against the Swedes in ages. I thought the frst half, other than Carroll's powerful headed goal, was pretty poorly played by both teams. Sweden began the 2nd half on fire and looked like they would win the game but I thought England turned things around when Walcott came on for the ineffective Milner. His speed and liveliness really sparked England nad as discussed he scored the tying goal on that weird shot which deceived isaksson. No blame for the keeper though as he saved Sweden with several superlative saves. Then what can you say about Welbeck's winner? Spectacular. |

A thrilling match between England and Sweden with a wonderful comeback by England. Sammy it has been longer than ages as you put it since England defeated Sweden in a competitive match, amazingly that was England's first ever competitive victory over the Swedes. And you would be hard pressed to find a better winning goal than Welbeck's spinning backheel! The young players came through for Hodgson and England with Carroll, Welbeck and Walcott each scoring a goal. The best thing is England have 4 points from their two matches played without Rooney. Now they get him back but Hodgson may have a dilemma on who to drop in order to play Rooney, either Carroll or Welbeck? A tough choice and as much as I like Carroll's work rate and aerial threat I think he likely is the one who will be sacrifised for Rooney. That is the plus side, on the minus side is England's midfield was not particularly impressive and gave the ball away a lot. Now it is on to play co hosts Ukraine. That won't be easy but France has already defeated Ukraine and England will go into that match knowing a tie will be enough to advance them to the quarterfinals. I think this team has the grit, speed and defencive organisation to achieve that goal. |

Did anyone notice Ibra having words with Hart after (I think) Sweden's second goal? I wonder what that was all about. On edit: This: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/soccer-dirty...09594--sow.html |

Haha, good catch Sporting. I did not notice that but not surprised to see Zlatan acting petulant. I may be a Milan fan but I clearly understand how he can get on the nerves of opposing teams fans (and neutrals alike!) An exciting 2nd half between England & Sweden and what a finish by the Arsenio Hall look alike Danny Welbeck! I unfortunately agree with Sammy about France, they look poised to do well in this tourney. Alou Diarra has been a monster in midfield, he breaks everything up. There always is talk of the "new Vieira" but Diarra looks like he is as close as you could ask for in style of play to Vieira. |

I enjoyed seeing how Ibrahimovic so often refused to pass the ball to an open man instead preferring to go it alone. Sweden are always known for being a very collective team, but not Zlatan. Sorry Sweden fans but he is an easy player to dislike. As an England supporter I really enjoyed watching England fight back after going down and as an important signal for the future, it was the younger players, Welbeck, Walcott and Carroll who led the way. Hard to think of Walcott as a young player since he made his England debut 6 years ago but he was just a young lad then. Hodgson does have a dilemma in how to integrate Rooney back into the team but that is a nice problem to have and like another poster, The Codger I believe it was, I think it will be Carroll who will make way for him as Hodgson could then go with Rooney-Welbeck partnered in an attack which should please both Simon and Karl. England and France are even on points atop the group entering the final round of group matches. The lesson from Russia's collapse will be there but there also is a very real possibility England could win the group and thereby avoid a likely encounter with Spain, who are favourites to win their group. The longer one can avoid facing Spain the better! |

I thought Gerrard had a good match. His cross to Carroll, very active in midfield, and yet, he seems at times to force a pass forward that leads to a break the other way. Anyone think the Gerrard-Parker combination might be broken and put Rooney in for one of those leaving both Carroll and Welbeck on the field? I don't either, but it seemed worth mentioning. |

There's a mental image I seriously didn't need!! Not that I'm pigeonholing you Winslow after this and BATE Borisov, but I must admit I thought you might have chuckled this evening when Ireland finished their match with a strike partnership of 'Long, Cox' |

Like you I would not expect to see that as the Parker-Gerrard combo is needed in midfield to give the team some balance. I expect Rooney to play with his United teammate Welbeck in attack. If England are chasing the game and need goals then I could see Carroll coming in for one of Parker or Gerrard with Rooney dropping a little deeper. |

Ukraine 0-1 England Sweden 2-0 France England end up winning the group and France, even with losing, finished second. First the England-Ukraine game, I thought Ukraine who came out attacking from the opening whistle, played apretty good game, except they just could not finish, England were on the back foot for a good portion of the game but gerrard did play pretty well in midfield and Rooney, who started alongside Welbeck, scored the game's only goal when he nodded in a deflected cross which somehow also slipped by Ukraine's goalie. That was all England needed and while Ukraine were wronged when they ahd a shot cross the line but was not given, the bottom line is that would have only made the final 1-1 which would not have changed the outcome either of this game or of the group. France were shocked by Sweden who saved their best game for last. At least Sweden goes home with some pride and Ibrahimovic scored perhaps the goal of the tournament, a flying scissors kick. France played somewhat bored and without much passion, a result of the game's circumstances where a loss still qualified them? Or was this a sign of troubles ahead? We'll find out on Saturday when France plays Spain in what will be one of the matches of the tournament so far. England advance to play Italy, not easy opponents either but between Spain and Itly I think most would rather face the Italians now. |

France really played poorly plus they also lost Philip Mexes for the quarterfinal because of suspension. The way he played vs Sweden, that may not be a terrible loss though. Ukraine were unfortunate, first they outplayed England, then they gave up a goal on a deflection, then they got robbed by the goal line ref not seeing the obvious, their shot crossed the line before Terry cleared it away. How did that ref miss that? He was right there! Just after the Euros, the International Board meet to decide on video technology to decide goals, the technology should be improved and tonight's robbery should only ensure its passage. |
