Spain 4-0 Ireland Italy 1-1 Croatia Fernando Torres gets back into form with 2 goals as Spain crush Ireland, it ended 4-0 but could have been even worse. Some splendid passing from Spain and if Torres puts away his chances, hey he is doing better than Cristiano Ronaldo, then Spain are going to bring a lot of joy to we Spanish. Great free kick by Pirlo, what a master. But Italy stopped playing after that I thought and Croatia fought back for the deserved tie. Spain and Croatia each have 4 points, Italy 2 and Ireland are eliminated with 0. Ireland become the first team officially eliminated. Sad for their lively fans. |

Del Bosque was vindicated today in his decision to select and then start Torres. Fine play from him and his speed and mobility does compliment the great passing of Iniesta, Xavi, Silva, Fabregas, Xabi Alonso, et al. Ireland were overmatched but this Spain team looked excellent tonight, this is how I want to see La Furia playing. Getting both Silva and Torres healthy and in form could make this an even better team than the one which won South Africa 2010. I think right now Andres Pirlo and Santi Cazorla are the two best free kick takers in the world. Great goal today from Pirlo. |

It is early and not time to get too excited yet plus Ireland are the weakest team in this tournament but that was still a lot of fun for Spanish fans. Hard not to be optimistic when you see the team play like this. Just wonderful passing and Torres with his speed does give Spain an additional weapon. But Croatia are looking pretty solid to me and they will test Spain. |

Vindication is a good description. Torres showed flashes of what he could do when he came on as a sub vs Italy but he could not finish. You would think these goals will raise his confidence and that can only help Spain. |

Spain really looked overpowering. One has to wonder, however, if it was just Spain or is Ireland really incapable. While possession does not always give you a fair indication of dominance, Ireland could not hold the ball for any significant length of time. The quality between the two teams was marked. It will be interesting to see what kind of effort Ireland puts out against Italy. They have to display more heart or Trappatoni is gone. Getting plowed like they did, even by a great squad like Spain, is really worrisome for the upcoming WC qualifying grind. Spain is really clicking, but I do wonder how Puyol absence will affect them against a stronger opponent. Pujols might be a bit slow in the back

Very true, Spain do loook good but Italy did cause some problems for Spain's defense and I would not be surprised if Croatia does too. I have been impressed with Croatia's play so far but they will need another good game like today from their goalie Pletikosa when they play Spain. But they also have a pretty good counter attack which will pose some problems for Spain. My money would still be on Spain and Italy getting through as I think each will win their final matches but look for Croatia to really test Spain. Vince, by the way it is Puyol not Pujols. As far as I know Spain do not have the baseball player Albert Pujols on their team!

I wouldn't say Italy stopped playing, look at the saves they forced out of Pletikosa but they did look a little tired and that may have made them look a little more passive in the 2nd half. What can you say about Pirlo? I am with Merengue, Pirlo and Cazorla are currently the top two free kick takers I have seen recently. True Ireland were poor and that helped Spain look good but this Spanish team does seem to be clicking, I think the rest Xavi and Iniesta got at the end of the season with Barcelona have helped them both as they each, especially Iniesta, look lively. And Silva is back to playing his best too. Add a more confident Torres and this team looks very, very good. The questions over the defense remain but can't we say that about every team in this competition, Germany, Russia, France and even Italy included? |

It is all about confidence and looks like Torres is getting his back. Get him on the end of passes and his speed and verticality adds another option to Spain's attack. I am curious to see how they will do against a pretty good Croatia team but Spain need not fear any team. If they play as they did versus Ireland they will do just fine. |

A score draw of 2-2 or more between Spain and Croatia will eliminate Italy, no matter what gli Azzurri do against Ireland. And all of Italy believes that is just what is going happen. The draw in general (and a 2-2 draw in particular) was the lowest odds option in the Italian market as soon as Spain scored their third, while Spain remain odds on to win in the UK. Talk of the possible "biscotto" (literally "biscuit", but meaning a result that has been "cooked" in advance) has also dominated the post-match analysis. Fascinating insight into Italian culture, that. |

Well, a 2-2 draw is slightly more difficult to arrange than a 0-0 one, but let's see what happens. Personally, I struggle to think of a situation in recent years, in any league or international tournament, where a result which would have suited both teams failed to happen. We've seen it recently in Spain with the Celta - Córdoba game, for example. |

Yes it does say much about Italian culture but all this talk of the "biscotto" takes away from the analysis of the Azzurri's deficiencies. Yesterday the team did stop playing after going in front and that attitude frankly surprised me from a Prandelli coached team. Against Ireland they do know they need to go for goals so hopefully that will positively effect the way they play that mtch. Ireland may be looking poor but the wily old fox Trapattoni still has some tricks up his sleave and Italy will need to concentrate and look to go forward. Hey Torres broke his slump yesterday, time for Balotelli to do the same in the next match! |
